  • This paper suggests an inquiry into the characteristics and implications of urbanscapes produced by Internet cafes, widely called PC Bangs in Korea, and their effects on the motions and boundaries of human bodies as cyborgs which exist in between actual and virtual spaces or between human and machine spaces in PC Bangs. The paper, which is organised into two main sections, first investigates the streetscapes of PC Bangs as electronic architectural spaces and suggests the urban electronic space of PC Bangs in terms of hypertext space. Then, it looks at the effects of PC Bangs on human bodies which exist as human-machine hybrids or cyborgs in PC Bangs. The paradoxical socio-spatial characteristics of PC Bangs as third, liminal or hybrid spaces between actual and virtual spaces or between human and machine spaces can be explained as follows. Firstly, there appear both nomadic and sedentary landscapes in that people in PC Bangs move in virtual spaces on the one hand, and are static in actual spaces on the other hand. Secondly, both open and closed spaces are shaped in that although PC Bangs act as open or public electronic spaces, they involve invisible social boundaries, forming the gendered space of masculinism. Thirdly, the boundaries of the human body are extended and are shrunk at the same time in that while the sensory boundaries of the body in PC Bangs are extended through electronic networks, its social boundaries are shrunk through the imaginary space of solipsism. Thus and finally, PC Bangs can be characterised not only as social spaces entailing embodied and gendered landscapes, but also as non-places involving the cyborg landscapes of human-machine connections.

  • Character images for the background screen of cell phones are one of the fast growing sectors of the mobile content market. However, character image buyers currently experience tremendous difficulties in searching for desired images due to the awkward image search process. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) widely used for image retrieval could be a good candidate as a solution to this problem, but it needs to overcome the limitation of the mobile Internet environment where an initial query set (IQS) cannot be easily provided as in the PC-based environment. We propose a new approach, IQS-AutoGen, which automatically generates an initial query set for CBIR on the mobile Internet. The approach applies the collaborative filtering (CF), a well-known recommendation technique, to the CBIR process by using users' preference information collected during the relevance feedback process of CBIR. The results of the experiment using a PC-based prototype system show that the proposed approach successfully satisfies the initial query requirement of CBIR in the mobile Internet environment, thereby outperforming the current image search process on the mobile Internet.

  • The fast advance in the VoIP technologies gives a rich opportunity to create different kind of VoIP applications such as IP telephony services. The application level call signaling protocols such as ITU-T H.323 and IETF SIP provide the communication functions of end-to-end call setup and release. Currently, there is a lot of H.323 based VoIP products in the market, however SIP is considered as a suitable protocol for supporting applications in IP environments, so SIP based VoIP products and services begin to appear. In this paper, firstly we present the characteristics of some possible SIP based applications and describe the design and implementation of a VoIP example service named PC-to-PC Internet telephony service using the developed SIP network components. The PC-to-PC Internet telephony service and User Agent are developed in MS window 98/2000 using visual C/C++, and Proxy server and Registrar in Linux 7.0 using C, respectively.

  • One-time passwords are used just once and discarded, which makes it more secure than the repeatedly used conventional passwords. This paper proposes a challenge-response based one-time password generator on a user's mobile phone always carried with the user. The generator can provide an additional authentication for a user to issue a money transfer request within his Internet banking session on a PC. A currently used device for Internet banking generates a password that changes every 30 seconds or so, which allows a man-in-the-middle to use it for stealing money within the 30 seconds. Unlike such a device, the proposed generator resists against the man-in-the-middle attack by a novel challenge-response scheme, provides better accessability and protection against stolen devices. As the currently used devices do, it prevents any unauthorized transfer even if the victim's all other credentials are revealed through his PC infected with spyware such as a keyboard logger.

  • Due to the high digital technology, various devices such as TV, PC, smartphone, and pad computer are connected to each other using internet and under the circumstance internet services of which the running platforms are mainly PC become "N-screenlized" by extending their service platform to non-PC devices. As a digital TV has outstanding features of being the most influential device in the living room and having the wide spectrum of users, several internet services has been ported on the digital TV platform (in the form of data services) in order to enhance their brand powers. Most of the services, however, failed to get a satisfactory results as the data services are defeated by the broadcasting contents in the competition for the viewer's interests. In the paper, the design guidelines that make data services not to compete with the broadcasting contents are proposed and a prototype of a data service that accommodates the guidelines is introduced. The prototype, called "TV ideal-type world-cup", does not disturb a viewer's watching broadcast contents and channel-changing behavior while it is running and its service flow is designed for a viewer to achieve the goal of service in a few minutes so that the viewer can enjoy the service in a commercial period.
