In recent years the popularity of multi-hop wireless networks has been growing. Its flexible topology and abundant routing path enables many types of applications. However, the lack of a centralized controller often makes it difficult to design a reliable service in multi-hop wireless networks. While packet routing has been the center of attention for decades, recent research focuses on data discovery such as file sharing in multi-hop wireless networks. Although there are many peer-to-peer lookup (P2P-lookup) schemes for wired networks, they have inherent limitations for multi-hop wireless networks. First, a wired P2P-lookup builds a search structure on the overlay network and disregards the underlying topology. Second, the performance guarantee often relies on specific topology models such as random graphs, which do not apply to multi-hop wireless networks. Past studies on wireless P2P-lookup either combined existing solutions with known routing algorithms or proposed tree-based routing, which is prone to traffic congestion. In this paper, we present two wireless P2P-lookup schemes that strictly build a topology-dependent structure. We first propose the Ring Interval Graph Search (RIGS) that constructs a DHT only through direct connections between the nodes. We then propose the ValleyWalk, a loosely-structured scheme that requires simple local hints for query routing. Packet-level simulations showed that RIGS can find the target with near-shortest search length and ValleyWalk can find the target with near-shortest search length when there is at least 5% object replication. We also provide an analytic bound on the search length of ValleyWalk.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks have drawn much research interest in the past few years because they provide a good substrate for large-scale applications in the Internet. In this paper, we introduce the use of anycast, a new "one-to-one-of-many" communication method in the Internet, to solve the following common problems of P2P overlay networks: load-balancing, topology-awareness, system partitioning, and multi-overlay interconnection. We also give an analysis of the features and limitations of the recently deployed anycast infrastructures in the Internet for supporting P2P overlay networks.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems with super-peer overlay networks show combined advantages of both hybrid and pure P2P systems. Super-peer is a special peer acting as a server to a cluster of generic peers. Organizing a super-peer network is one of important issues for P2P systems with super-peer networks. Conventional P2P systems are based on two-level hierarchies of peers. One is a layer for generic peers and the other is for super-peers. And it is usual that super-peer networks have forms of random graphs. However, for accommodating a large-scale collection of generic peers, the super-peer network has also to be extended. In this paper, we propose a scheme of hierarchically constructing super-peer networks for large-scale P2P systems. At first, a two-level tree, called a simple super-peer network, is proposed, and then a scheme of generalizing and then extending the simple super-peer network to multi-level super-peer network is presented to construct a large-scale super-peer network. We call it an extended super-peer network. The simple super-peer network has several good features, but due to the fixed number of levels, it may have a scalability problem. Thus, it is extended to k-level tree of a super-peer network, called extended super-peer network. It shows good scalability and easy management of generic peers for large scale P2P system.
Mobile P2P protocols in ad-hoc networks have gained large attention recently. Although there has been much research on P2P algorithms for wired networks, existing P2P protocols are not suitable for mobile ad-hoc networks because they do not consider mobility of peers. This study proposes a new cluster-based P2P protocol for ad hoc networks which utilizes peer mobility. In typical cluster-based P2P algorithms, each cluster has a super peer and other peers of the cluster register their file list to the super peer. High mobility peers would cause a lot of file list registration traffic because they hand-off between clusters frequently. In the proposed scheme, while peers with low mobility behave in the same way as the peers of the typical cluster-based P2P schemes, peers with high mobility behave differently. They inform their entrance to the cluster region to the super peer but they do not register their file list to the super peer. When a peer wishes to find a file, it first searches the registered file list of the super peer and if fails, query message is broadcasted. We perform mathematical modeling, analysis and optimization of the proposed scheme regarding P2P traffic and associated routing traffic. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme performs much better than or similar to the typical cluster-based P2P scheme and flooding based Gnutella.

A peer-to-peer(P2P) network is inherently vulnerable to malicious attacks from participating peers because of its open, flat, and autonomous nature. This paper addresses the problem of effectively defending from active attacks of malicious peers at bootstrapping phase and at online phase, respectively. We propose a secure membership handling protocol to protect the assignment of ID related things to a newly joining peer with the aid of a trusted entity in the network. The trusted entities are only consulted when new peers are joining and are otherwise uninvolved in the actions of the P2P networks. For the attacks in online phase, we present a novel message structure applied to each message transmitted on the P2P overlay. It facilitates the detection of message alteration, replay attack and a message with wrong information. Taken together, the proposed techniques deter malicious peers from cheating and encourage good peers to obey the protocol of the network. The techniques assume a basic P2P overlay network model, which is generic enough to encompass a large class of well-known P2P networks, either unstructured or not.

The main concern in mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) networks is security because jamming or eavesdropping on a wireless link is much easier than on a wired one and such damage can be incurred without physical access or contact. In particular, authentication has increasingly become a requirement in mobile P2P environments. This paper presents a new mutual authentication mechanism which requires less storage space and maintains a high level of security in mobile P2P networks. The proposed mechanism improves efficiency by avoiding the use of centralized entities and is designed to be agile in terms of both reliability and low-cost implementation. The mechanism suggested in the simulation evaluates the function costs occurring in authentication between the devices under mobile P2P network environment comparing to existing method in terms of basic operation costs, traffic costs, communications costs, storage costs and scalability. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism provides high authentication with low cryptography processing overhead.
Recently, with the development of mobile devices and near field communication, mobile P2P networks have been actively studied to improve the limits of the existing centralized processing system. A peer has limited components such as batteries, memory and storage spaces in mobile P2P networks. The trust of a peer should be discriminated in order to share reliable contents in mobile P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a trust discrimination scheme considering limited resources in mobile P2P environments. The proposed scheme discriminates the trust of a peer by direct rating values using the rating information of the peer and indirect rating values by the other peers. The recent update time is included in the rating information. The proposed scheme reduces the redundant rating information by comparing the recent update times of the rating information. It is shown through performance evaluation that the proposed scheme reduces the number of messages and improves the accuracy of trust over the existing scheme.

Home network providers have many worries about providing home network services with an expandable, reliable, flexible and low-cost structure according to the expanding market environment. The existing client-server system has various problems such as complexity and high costs in providing home network services. In this paper we propose the P2P-SIP structure. P2P communication terminal supporting access of distributed resources provides functions which the existing SIP-based network devices have. Because diverse terminals in a home network access through networks, also, partitioning network domains with home gateways to manage, and applying the network-based PMIPv6(Proxy Mobile IPv6) technology considering mobility of terminals would help to have a more efficient home network structure. Especially, the proposed P2P-SIP structure proves itself as a very efficient structure to have an outstanding expandability among different home networks in a region, and to reduce maintenance costs.

With fast deployment of high-speed networks and various online services, the demand for massive content distribution is also growing fast. An approach that is increasingly visible in communication research community and in industry domain is peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. The P2P swarming technique enables a content distribution system to achieve higher throughput, avoid server or network overload, and be more resilient to failure and traffic fluctuation. Moreover, as a P2P-based architecture pushed the computing and bandwidth cost toward the network edge, it allows scalability to support a large number of subscribers on a global scale, while imposing little demand for equipment on the content providers. However, the P2P swarming burdens message exchange overheads on the system. In this paper, we propose a new protocol which provides confidentiality, authentication, integrity, and access control to P2P swarming. We implemented a prototype of our protocol on Android smart phone platform. We believe our approach can be straightforwardly adapted to existing commercial P2P content distribution systems with modest modifications to current implementations.
Recently, with the development of wireless communication technologies and mobile equipments, various studies on mobile P2P networks have been conducted. In this paper, we propose an advertisement dissemination method considering peer's mobilities and preferences in mobile P2P networks. The proposed scheme generates a peer's preference through the analysis of users' activities to disseminate advertisements with user preferences. To reduce duplicated advertising messages and improve reception ratio, the priority of advertisement re-dissemination is determined according to peer's preferences, mobilities, and advertisement reception ratio. We improve the participation rate of the advertisement dissemination of mobile peers using the incentive mechanism in mobile P2P networks. To show the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing scheme in terms of the number of messages and accuracy.
