Screening for antioxidative activities of 180 species of crude drugs were performed on their methanol extracts. More than 45% of those showed some effect on oxidative stability of linoleic acid, and 44 species seemed to have rather strong antioxidative activity. Selected these samples of the active crude drugs were further examined in their methanol extracts with methyl linoleate emulsion system. especially 11 species revealed strong antioxidative activity. These 11 species were then successively extracted with ethyl acetate and petroleum ether, and their antioxidative activity was determined. The ethyl acetate and petroleum ether extracts of Epimedium Koreanum NAKAI, Psoralea Corylifolia L., Syringa Dilata NAKAI and Prunus mume Sieb, et Zucc. showed much more effective than the others in stabilizing methyl linoleate. Scutellaria baicalensis George. Glycyrrhiza glabra L. were only effective in the methanol extract.
The fermentation and quality characteristics of kimchi prepared using various types of maesil, including freshly sliced maesil (FSM), freshly ground maesil (FGM),and dried maesil powder (MP), were investigated during 25-day fermentation at 10C. The pH value decreased rapidly in the control fermentation but only slowly in maesil-supplemented kimchi. Titratable acidity values changed in the same manner. The addition of maesil significantly inhibited the growth of total aerobes, and lactic acid bacteria during fermentation over 10 days. The color (L, a, and b values) of kimchi did not differ between control and maesil-supplemented kimchi samples regardless of maesil type or concentration. Kimchi hardness did not initially differ among the various samples but decreased during fermentation. However, the hardness of maesil-supplemented kimchi was higher than that of control samples. Thus, kimchi supplemented with either 6% (w/w) MP or 6% (w/w) FGM maintained optimal hardness during fermentation. The antioxidant activity of kimchi was increased in a dose-dependent manner by addition of maesil. Kimchi supplemented with 6% (w/w) FGM showed the highest antioxidant activity. The sensory qualities (taste, flavor, color, and overall acceptability) of FSM-supplemented kimchi were better than those of control samples.

Stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economically important pests of fruit trees in Korea. The aim of the present study was to survey the relative abundance of stink bugs on four stone fruits, maesil (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc), cherry (Prunus avium L.), plum (Prunus salicina Lindl), and peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch), from 2017 to 2019 in the field. Four stink bug species were observed, including Carbula putoni (Jakovlev), Dolycoris baccarum (L.), Halyomorpha halys (Stål), Plautia stali Scott. H. halys was the most abundant (65%), followed by P. stali (26%), C. putoni (7%), and D. baccarum (2%). H. halys was the dominant species in maesil, cherry, and peach fruits, whereas P. stali was the dominant species in plum fruits. Most (81%) of the stink bugs observed were adults, with nymphs accounting for only 19% of the observed specimens. More stink bugs were observed during the late season than during the early season. These finding suggest that control strategies should be developed for the management of H. halys and P. stali at harvest in stone fruit tree orchards in Korea.
The chemical characteristics of flesh and pomace of Japanese apricot were investigated. The moisture contents of flesh and pomace of Japanese apricot were 89.94% and 91.39%. Free sugars and sugar-derivatives of Japanese apricot flesh (JAF), were 0.77% glucose, 0.47% fructose, 0.35% mannitol and 0.47% sorbitol, and of Japanese apricot pomace (JAP) were 0.01% glucose, 0.09% fructose, 0.38% mannitol and 0.06% sorbitol, respectively. The organic acids of flesh and pomace of Japanese apricot were citric acid, malic acid and oxalic acid. The predominant minerals in flesh and pomace of Japanese apricot were K, P, Ca and Al. The contents of dietary fiber (DF) in JAF were 2.94% of insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), 1.07% of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and 4.01% of total dietary fiber (TDF). IDF of JAP were 6.25%, SDF 0.51% and TDF, 6.76%.
We studied changes in a high-proof maesil liqueur during a 5 month leaching and ripening period at $10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$. Titratable acidity increased after 2 months at all temperatures, but pH only changed after 2 months at $30^{\circ}C$. The absorbance at 420 nm increased significantly during a high temperature leaching and ripening period. The alcohol concentration was similar for maesil liqueurs held at $10^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ for 2 months. The levels of reducing sugars and polyphenols were also higher for liqueurs stored at higher temperatures. The major free sugars present after one month (in order of decreasing concentration) were fructose, glucose, sucrose, and maltose. The major organic acids were citric, lactic, malic, succinic and acetic acid The total organic acid content of maesil liqueur decreased after 1 month at $10^{\circ}C$ but increased until 2 months at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the antithrombotic effects of the four herbal ingredients (Mume Fructus, MF; Santali Albi Lignum, SAL; Amomi Tsao-Ko Fructus, ATF; and Amomi Fructus, AF) of modified Jeho-tang (MJHT) in a ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$)-induced carotid arterial thrombosis model. Methods: Thirty minutes prior to a 35% $FeCl_3$ application, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were injected with saline, MF, SAL, ATF or AF (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection), respectively. The effect of the MJHT ingredients was examined for time to occlusion (TTO) and thrombus weight (TW) in a $FeCl_3$-induced thrombosis model. Histological analysis was performed to examine the effect of the MJHT ingredients on collagen fiber damage using hematoxylin & eosin and Masson's trichrome staining. Results: Compared with vehicle treatment, MF, SAL and ATF treatment delayed TTO (vehicle, $8.11{\pm}0.60$ min; MF, $16.67{\pm}1.03$ min; SAL, $17.50{\pm}1.52$ min and ATF, $13.33{\pm}1.21$ min; P < 0.001) and inhibited thrombus formation (vehicle, $0.79{\pm}0.03$ mg/mm; MF, $0.61{\pm}0.07$ mg/mm; SAL, $0.57{\pm}0.03$ mg/mm and ATF, $0.72{\pm}0.02$ mg/mm; P < 0.001). In addition, each herbal ingredient of MJHT except for AF prevented the collagen fiber damage induced by a 35% $FeCl_3$ application. These results indicate that the MJHT ingredients MF ${\geq}$ SAL ${\geq}$ ATF ${\geq}$ AF possess antithrombotic activity in a $FeCl_3$-induced carotid arterial thrombosis. Conclusions: Altogether, these results are the first evidence that the MJHT ingredients MF, SAL and ATF have the ability to prevent vascular damage and thrombus formation in $FeCl_3$-induced carotid arterial thrombosis.
This study was conducted to investigate the quality change of pork rectum by addition of maesil. pH of the pork rectum was decreased by the addition of maesil in a dose dependent manner. The changes in the L and a color values of both raw pork rectum and cooked pork rectum by storage were negligable. The b color value of raw pork rectum was certainly increased in the early stage of storage. The b value of cooked pork rectum, which was slightly dropped by addition of maesil, was decreased as storage progressed. In both raw and cooked pork rectum, thiobarbituric acid value (TBA) was significantly decreased in a dose dependent manner up to 5% addition of maesil. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) content in the ground pork rectum was conspicuously decreased by the addition of maesil. Consequently, the storage time of both raw and cooked pork rectum was extended more than 4 days by the 5% addition of maesil.
Jehotang is a cold traditional Korean drink made with honey and several ingredients used in traditional Korean medicine. The ingredients include Fructus mume, Fructus amomi, Fructus tsaoko, Santalum album and honey. In this study, Jehotang and its ingredients were determined through the analysis of antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activity. In addition, quality characteristics of Jehotang made by a traditional recipe(Yeonmil) and a modern recipe(double boiling and boiling) were also compared in terms of pH, color and sugar content. Total phenolic content of extract from Fructus ammomi was found to be 120.45 mg, and Yeonmil recipe was discovered 152.66 mg equivalent of gallic acid per g of extract. DPPH free radical scavenging activity were Feuctus amomi(93.13%) and Yeonmil recipe(56.44%). The Fructus amomi extract showed the highest ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity(89.51%) at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activity of boiled Jehotang were 52.38% and 72.52%, respectively. These results suggest that extract of Fructus amomi has an antioxidant activity and antidiabetic effects. Yeonmil recipe is useful for antioxidant effects more than the others. Also, the double boiling recipe has an excellent antidiabetic effect.
Fruit leathers were manufactured from flesh and pomace of Japanese apricots and evaluated for their physical, chemical, microbiological and sensory properties. The contents of total dietary fiber(TDF) in Japanese apricot leathers(JAL) and Japanese apricot pomace leathers(JAPL) were 4.06% and 7.82%, respectively. One hundred grams of leather contained 368kcal in JAL and 352kcal in JAPL. Water activities of fruit leathers were 0.36 in JAL and 0.48 in JAPL. None of the factors had an effect on the microbiological counts of any of the organisms. The L, a and b values of the fruit leathers were higher in those made of JAF than those made of JAP. The fruit leathers made of JAF were harder than those made of JAP. Sensory panelists preferred fruit leathers made of JAP to those made of JAF in all attributes, except for their color.
The rapid advance of technology has accelerated global warming. As 50.4 percent of South Korea's population is concentrated in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, which has become a considerable emitter of greenhouse gases, the city's average temperature is expected to increase more rapidly than in other areas in the country. A rise in the average temperature would affect everyday life and urban ecology; thus, appropriate measures to cope with the forthcoming disaster are in need. This study analyzed the changes in plant phenological phases from the past to the present based on temperatures (average temperature of Feb, Mar, April) observed in seven different weather stations nearthe Seoul Metropolitan Area (Ganghwa, Seoul, Suwon, Yangpyeong, Icheon, Incheon, and Paju) and the first flowering dates of Plum tree (Prunus mume), Korean forsythia (Forsythia koreana), Korean rosebay (Rhododendron mucronulatum), Cherry tree (Prunus serrulate), Peach tree (Prunus persica), and Pear tree (Pyrus serotina). Then, RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) 2.6 and 8.5 scenarios were used to predict the future temperature in the Seoul Metropolitan Area and how it will affect plant phenological phases. Furthermore, the study examined the differences in the flowering dates depending on various strategies to mitigate greenhouse gases. The result showed that the rate of plant phenological change had been accelerated since the 1900s.If emission levels remain unchanged, plants will flower from 18 to 29 earlier than they do now in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, which would be faster than in other areas in the country. This is because the FFD (First Flowering Date), is highly related to temperature changes. The Seoul Metropolitan Area, which has been urbanized more rapidly than any other areas, is predicted to become a temperature warming, forcing the FFDs of the area to occur faster than in the rest of the country. Changes in phenology can lead to ecosystem disruption by causing mismatches in species interacting with each otherin an ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to establish strategies against temperature warming and FFD change due to urbanization.
