  • Recently inkjet printing technology has been developed in the areas of low cost fabrication in environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. Although inkjet printing requires the interdisciplinary researches including development of materials, manufacturing processes and printing equipment and peripherals, manufacturing a printhead is still core of inkjet technology. In this study, a piezoelectric driven DOD (drop on demand) inkjet printhead has been fabricated on three layers of the silicon wafer in MEMS Technology because of its chemical resistance to industrial inks, strong mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy to meet the drop volume uniformity in printed electronics and display industries. The flow passage, filter and nozzles are precisely etched on the layers of the silicon wafers and assembled through silicon fusion bonding without additional adhesives. The piezoelectric is screen-printed on the top the pressure chamber and the nozzle plate surface is treated with non-wetting coating for jetting fluids. Printheads with nozzle number of 16 to 256 have been developed to get the drop volume range from 5 pL to 80 pL in various industrial applications. Currently our printheads are successfully utilized to fabricating color-filters and PI alignment layers in LCD Flat Panel Display and legend marking for PCB in Samsung Electronics.

  • 6061Al-SiCP metal matrix composite materials(MMCs) were fabricated by injecting SiCP particles directly into the atomized spray. The main attraction of this technique is the rapid fabrication of semi-finished, composite products in a combined atomization, particulate injection(10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$, SiCP) and deposition operation. Conclusions obtained are as follows; The microstructure of the unreinforced spray formed 6061Al alloy consisted of relatively fine(50 $\mu\textrm{m}$) equiaxed grains. By comparision, the microstructure of the I/M materials was segregated and consisted of relatively coarse(150 $\mu\textrm{m}$) grains. The probability of clustering of SiCP particles in co-sprayed metal matrix composites increased it ceramic particle size(SiCP) was reduced and the volume fraction was held constant. Analysis of overspray powders collected from the spray atomization and deposition experiments indicated that morphology of powders were nearly spherical and degree of powders sphercity was deviated due to composite with SiCp particles. Interfacial bonding between matrix and ceramics was improved by heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Mg). Maximum hardness values [Hv: 165 kg/mm2 for Al-10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ SiCp Hv--159 kg/mm2 for Al-40 $\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp] were obtained through the solution heat treatment at $530^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and aging at $178^{\circ}C$, and there by the resistance were improved.

  • Thermostable enzymes derived from Thermotoga maritima have attracted worldwide interest for their potential industrial applications. Structural analysis and docking studies were preformed on T. maritima β-glucosidase enzyme with cellobiose and pNP-linked substrates. The 3D structure of the thermostable β-glucosidase was downloaded from the Protein Data Bank database. Substrates were downloaded from the PubCehm database and were minimized using MOE software. Docking of BglA and substrates was carried out using MOE software. After analyzing docked enzyme/substrate complexes, it was found that Glu residues were mainly involved in the reaction, and other important residues such as Asn, Ser, Tyr, Trp, and His were involved in hydrogen bonding with pNP-linked substrates. By determining the substrate recognition pattern, a more suitable β-glucosidase enzyme could be developed, enhancing its industrial potential.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish powder metallurgy (P/M) fabrication processes for high performance 2XXX Al composites reinforced with SiC whiskers. Rapidly solidified 2XXX Al powders produced by commercial atomization technique were mixed with SiC whiskers. The results of mixing processes indicated that fluidized zone mixing technique was considerably effective for the large scale production of the mixture of Al powders and whiskers. In order to consolidate these $Al-SiC_w$ mixtures into $Al-SiC_w$ composite billets, a vacuum hot press was set up, and hot processing variables were investigated. Using the hot pressing temperature of $620^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 50 MPa, good quality $Al-SiC_w$ composite billets having relatively homogeneous microstructure and sound Al/sic interfacial bonding were obtained. Composite billets were then extruded to bars having relatively homogeneous microstructures at the extrusion temperature of 450~500$^{\circ}C$ under the extrusion pressure of 700~ 1000 MPa. Mechanical properties of the extruded bars were found to be comparable with those of the composite processed by Advanced Composite Materials Corp. To improve mechanical properties of the composites, elimination of coarse intermetallic compounds, uniform distribution of reinforcements, and minimization of whisker breakage are suggested.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface treatments on bond strength of indirect composite material (Tescera Indirect Composite System) to monolithic zirconia (inCoris TZI). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Partially stabilized monolithic zirconia blocks were cut into with 2.0 mm thickness. Sintered zirconia specimens were divided into different surface treatment groups: no treatment (control), sandblasting, glaze layer & hydrofluoric acid application, and sandblasting + glaze layer & hydrofluoric acid application. The indirect composite material was applied to the surface of the monolithic zirconia specimens. Shear bond strength value of each specimen was evaluated after thermocycling. The fractured surface of each specimen was examined with a stereomicroscope and a scanning electron microscope to assess the failure types. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey LSD tests (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Bond strength was significantly lower in untreated specimens than in sandblasted specimens (P<.05). No difference between the glaze layer and hydrofluoric acid application treated groups were observed. However, bond strength for these groups were significantly higher as compared with the other two groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Combined use of glaze layer & hydrofluoric acid application and silanization are reliable for strong and durable bonding between indirect composite material and monolithic zirconia.

  • The purpose of this study was to asses the shear bond strengths of 3 types of glass ionomer cement and 1 type of composite resin to dentinal surface with or without ZOE pretreatment. 80 extracted tooth specimens are divided into two groups; the control group (40 specimens) is not treated with ZOE and the other(40 specimens) is ZOE pretreated during 24 hours before bonding procedure. Shear bond strengths were measured with universal testing machine (Instron, Model 4301) and statistically processed by ANOVA and t-test. The results were as follows: 1. Bond strength of the ZOE treated experimental group showed lower than the control group, except chemical cured glass ionomer cement(p<0.05). 2. After ZOE surface treatment, the bond strength of composite resin was superior than glass ionomer cement and all experimental group was decreased (p<0.05). 3. It has nothing to do with ZOE surface treatment, that chemical curing glass ionomer cement was showed lowest bond strength.

  • Dielectric studies of methyl acrylate with 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-heptanol and 1-octanol binary mixtures have been carried out over the frequency range from 10 MHz to 10 GHz at temperatures of 283, 293, 303 and 313 K using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) for various concentrations. The Kirkwood correlation factor and excess inverse relaxation time were determined and discussed to yield information on the molecular structure and dynamics of the mixture. The values of the static dielectric constant, relaxation time and the Kirkwood correlation factor decrease with increased concentration of methyl acrylate in alcohol. The Bruggman plot shows a non-linearity of the curves for all the systems studied indicates the heterointeraction which may be due to hydrogen bonding of the OH group of alcohol with C=O of the methyl acrylate. The excess inverse relaxation time values are negative for all the systems at all the temperatures indicates that the solute-solvent interaction hinders the rotation of the dipoles of the system.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three different surface conditioning methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets bonded directly to gold alloy with chemically cured resin. Methods: Two hundred ten type III gold alloy specimens were randomly divided into six groups according to the combination of three different surface conditioning methods (aluminum oxide sandblasting only, application of a metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting, silica coating and silanation) and thermocycling (with thermocycling, without thermocycling). After performing surface conditioning of specimens in accordance with each experimental condition, metal brackets were bonded to all specimens using a chemically cured resin. The SBS was measured at the moment of bracket debonding, and the resin remnants on the specimen surface were evaluated using the adhesive remnant index. Results: Application of metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting yielded a higher bond strength than that with aluminum oxide sandblasting alone (p < 0.001), and silica coating and silanation yielded a higher bond strength than that with metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting (p < 0.001). There was no significant change in SBS after thermocycling in all groups. Conclusions: With silica coating and silanation, clinically satisfactory bond strength can be attained when metal brackets are directly bonded to gold alloys using a chemically cured resin.

  • $70V_2O_5-10Fe_2O_3-13P_2O_5-7B_2O_3$ glasses were prepared to study the electrical conductivity and catalytic properties of the structural change with crystallization. The structural changes were analyzed by determining the molecular volume from the sample density; using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, which indicated that $V_2O_5$, $VO_2$ and $B_2O_3$ crystals in heat-treated more than 1h samples. Especially a new crystalline phase of non-stoichiometric $Fe_{0.12}V_2O_5$ was formed after 6 h heat treatment. The V-O bonding change after crystallization was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR); V ion change from $V^{5+}$ to $V^{4+}$ was shown by XPS. Conductivity and catalytic properties were examined based on the polaronic hopping of V and Fe ions, which exhibited different valence states with crystallization.
