  • This paper provides an insight into the response of non-seismic reinforced concrete (RC) building frames to excitations of different frequencies through experimental investigation. The results of cyclic loading tests of six full-scale RC beam-column sub-assemblies are presented. The tested specimens did not have any transverse reinforcement inside the joint core, and they were subjected to quasi-static and dynamic loading with frequencies as high as 20 Hz. Some important differences between the cyclic responses of non-seismic and ductile RC frames are highlighted. The effect of excitation frequency on the behavior of non-seismic joints is also discussed. In the quasi-static tests, shear deformation of the joint panel accounted for more than 50% of the applied story drift. The test results also showed that higher-frequency excitations are less detrimental than quasi-static cyclic loads, and non-seismic frames can withstand a higher load and a larger deformation when they are applied faster.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is compare the rate of marginal bone resorption around hydroxyapatite-coated implants given different loading times in order to evaluate their stability. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively for one year, targeting 41 patients whose treatment areas were the posterior maxilla and the mandible. Osstem TS III HA (Osstem Implant Co., Busan, Korea) and Zimmer TSV-HA (Zimmer Dental, Carlsbad, CA, USA), which employ the new hydroxyapatite coating technique, were used. The patients were divided into two groups - immediate and delayed loading - and the bone level at the time of loading commencement and after one year of loading was measured using periapical radiography. Differences between the groups were evaluated using Mann-Whitney (${\alpha}$=0.05). Results: For all patients as a single group, the survival rate of the implants was 100%, and the mean marginal bone loss was $0.26{\pm}0.59mm$. In comparison of the differences by loading, mean marginal bone loss of $0.32{\pm}0.69mm$ was recorded for the immediate loading group whereas the delayed loading group had mean marginal bone loss of $0.16{\pm}0.42mm$. However, the difference was not significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: Within the limited observation period of one year, predictable survival rates can be expected when using immediately loaded hydroxyapatite-coated implants.

  • PURPOSE. This in-vitro study was designed to evaluate retention forces, microleakage and plastic deformation of a prefabricated 2-implant bar attachment system (SFI-Bar, Cendres+$M{\acute{e}}taux$, Switzerland). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two SFI implant-adapters were torqued with 35 Ncm into two implant analogues. Before the tube bars were finally sealed, the inner cavity of the tube bar was filled with liquid red dye to evaluate microleakage. As tube bar sealing agents three different materials were used (AGC Cem (AGC, resin based), Cervitec Plus (CP; varnish) and Gapseal (GS; silicone based). Four groups with eight specimens each were tested (GS, GS+AGC, AGC, CP). For cyclic loading, the attachment system was assembled parallel to the female counterparts in a chewing simulator. The mean retention forces of the initial and final ten cycles were statistically evaluated (ANOVA, ${\alpha}{\leq}.05$). RESULTS. All groups showed a significant loss of retention forces. Their means differed between 30-39 N initially and 22-28 N after 50,000 loading cycles. No significant statistical differences could be found between the groups at the beginning (P=.224), at the end (P=.257) or between the loss of retention forces (P=.288). Microleakage occurred initially only in some groups but after 10,000 loading cycles all groups exhibited microleakage. CONCLUSION. Long-term retention forces of the SFI-Bar remained above 20 N which can be considered clinically sufficient. The sealing agents in this study are not suitable to prevent microleakage.

  • DO, ORP and pH values measured during SBR operation can provide information about removal reaction of organic contaminants and nutrient materials in the reactor. It is already generalized control strategy to control reaction phase time using their special patterns indicating the end of the removal reactions. However, those informations are limited to point out the end time of oxidative reaction in the aerobic phase or reductive reaction in the anoxic phase without giving quantitative value of influent loading level. In this research, a diagnosis algorithm which can estimate the loading level of carbon and ammonia as high, medium and low was developed using the basic measurements like DO, ORP, and pH. It will be possible to know the level of influent loading rate from those online measurements without experimental analysis.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare straight and tapered implant designs in terms of marginal bone loss, the modified plaque index (mPI), and the modified bleeding index (mBI) for 5 years after functional loading. Methods: Twelve patients were recruited. Two types of implants were placed adjacent to each other: 1 straight implant and 1 tapered implant. Marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI were measured every year for 5 years after loading. Results: The straight implants showed 0.2±0.4 mm of marginal bone loss at 5 years after loading, while the tapered implants showed 0.2±0.3 mm of marginal bone loss; this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.833). Our analysis also showed no statistically significant differences in mPI (straight implants: 0.3±0.3 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P=0.414) or in mBI (straight implants: 0.3±0.4 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P=0.317) at 5 years after prosthesis delivery. Conclusions: Straight and tapered implants showed no significant differences with respect to marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI for 5 years after loading.

  • The more accurate estimation of the pollutant loadings from nonpoint source is needed to evaluate water quality of water resources such as river and reservoir. Therefore this study was performed to grasp the scale and characteristics of pollutant. In this study, STORM model was applied to I-cheon district to estimate runoff and pollutant loading of SS, BOD, T-N and $PO_4-P$. The results estimated by STORM model were fitted well to surveyed water quality in flow, SS and BOD. The annual loadings were estimated to be 36,463 kg/$km^3$/yr of SS, 8,090 kg/$km^3$/yr of BOD, 4,435 kg/$km^3$/yr of T-N and 358 kg/$km^3$/yr of $PO_4-P$. It was also found that the monthly pollutant loadings of SS, BOD, $PO_4-P$ were greatest in May and T-N in April.

  • A modified polyol process is developed to enhance Pt loading during the preparation of Pt/C catalysts. With the help of the zeta potential, the effect of pH on the electrostatic forces between the support and the Pt colloid is investigated. It is shown experimentally that the surface charge on the carbon support becomes more electropositive when the solution pH is changed from alkaline to acidic. However, this change does not affect the electronegative surface charge of Pt colloids already attained and stabilized by glycolate anions. This new behavior caused by the change in the solution pH accounts for the enhanced yield of the process and does not affect the Pt particle size. All our experimental results reveal that this simple modification is a cost effective method for the synthesis of highly Pt loaded Pt/C catalysts for fuel cells.

  • A study was made on the extraction equilibria of succinic and formic acids from aqueous solutions using tri-n-octylamine (TOA) in 1-octanol. It was shown that the loading values of TOA decreased with increasing pH values. The apparent equilibrium constants for each acidamine complex were determined by an equilibrium model. In the case succinic acid, the formation of a bisuccinate anion played an important role in the stoichiometry of the acid-amine complex.

  • Nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in surface streams mainly lead to euthrophication. It aggravates water quality and consequently increases the purification costs. As a resolution of water contamination caused by household drainage through irrigation route by 70% of the 1,300 community residents in Eum-Am Myun, Seo-San city, was implemented biological self-purification method by growing Oenanthe Javanica along the polluted water tunnel. The contaminated water was efficiently purified after passing the dropwort field; DO conc. of effluent water was increased 8.3∼61.9% after through the drop wort field. HRT of experiment system was changed 0.05∼1.50/day. 50% of BOD was eliminated at the range above 12 mg/l of Influent BOD conc. Also, 50% of COD was eliminated at the range above 30 mg/l of Influent COD conc. Finnally, the influent T-N loading at range below 1.5 g/m$^3$/d reduced 50% of Influent T-N conc., and so did influent T-P loading at the range below 0.03 g/m$^3$/dwas reduced 50% of Influent T-P conc.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the examining and understanding of the bonding behavior of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheets bonded to concrete blocks and steel plates under fatigue loading. First, a series of experimental investigations is summarized in the paper. The fatigue behavior of bonding surface between FRP sheets and concrete is finally characterized by the conducted P-S-N diagram representing the relationship among the probability of FRP debonding (P), the bond stress amplitudes (S), and the number of cycles (N) at debonding on a semi-logarithmic scale. The different debonding modes for various fracturing surface are also investigated and evaluated.
