Three Angelica sinensis polysaccharide fractions (APFs), named APF1, APF2 and APF3, were isolated and purified from Radix A. sinensis and their antioxidant activities were evaluated in isolated mouse peritoneal macrophages by pretreatment with APFs before exposure to 0.2 mM tertbutylhydroperoxide (t-BHP). The results showed that pretreatment of the macrophages with APFs as low as $10{\mu}g$/ml could significantly enhance t-BHP-decreased cell survival, intracellular glutathione (GSH) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and also inhibited t-BHP-increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) formation (p < 0.05), and APF3 was the most active fraction, followed by APF2 and APF1 in decreasing order. Furthermore, we found for the first time that the bound-protein in APF3 was associated closely with the protective effects and the polysaccharide inhibited the excess NO release from t-BHP-activated macrophages to protect host cells.
In the present work, the corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (x = 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 wt.%) alloys have been investigated. Potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests were carried out in 3.5% NaCl solution of pH 7.2 at room temperature to measure the corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (x = 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 wt.%) alloys. With increase of the Sn contents, the volume fraction of the $Mg_2Sn$ phase was increased. The corrosion rate of Mg-xSn alloys was increased up to 7 wt.%Sn and decreased above 9 wt.%Sn. Initiation of galvanic site during immersion mainly occurred at Mg/$Mg_2Sn$ interface and propagation went into ${\alpha}$-Mg. For this reason, corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (added from 1 wt.%Sn to 7 wt.%Sn alloys) alloys are decreased because the galvanic site was increased with increasing Sn addition. In Mg-9wt.%Sn alloy, however, the corrosion site were changed from Mg/$Mg_2Sn$ interface to ${\alpha}$-Mg/$M_2Sng$ interface in lamellar structure. Preferentially corrosion of ${\alpha}$-Mg/$M_2Sn$ interface in lamellar structure impeded corrosion propagation went into ${\alpha}$-Mg.

Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) has been used as a food supplement and a traditional herbal medicine. In this study, we prepared various flavonoid fractions (RS, RW1, RW2 and RWE) from a hot water extract of RVS and their influence on male reproductive organs and spermatogenesis were studied in rats which were orally administered 200 mg/kg of them for 8 weeks. All experimental groups did not show any significant changes in body weight and blood clinical chemistry for liver function. Plasma testosterone level was elevated about 3.7, 5.2 and 6.3 folds in RW1, RW2 and RWE groups, respectively. The weights of testes and epididymides tended to increase slightly without the statistical significance in RW2 and RWE. The spermatozoon motility and epididymal sperm concentration were significantly increased (P<0.05) in RWE and RW1, respectively, when compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in histology and apparent shape of testes and epididymides among the control and the experimental groups. Collectively, RWE showed effectively the elevation of plasma testosterone level, spermatozoon motility and the epididymal sperm concentration without the significant increase of testis and epidiymides weights. When the component HPLC profile among the flavonoids fractions of RVS was compared, the ratio of components were only different. These findings suggest that the Rhus flavonoid fraction, particularly RWE, can stimulate the androgen-dependent male sexual function and it can be applied to the material of functional food for enhancing the sexual function.
An antibiotic compound was isolated from the culture of an antagonist against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. sesami, Bacillus polymyxa strain KB-8, and tested for the control of Fusarium wilt of sesame in greenhouse conditions. Optimum conditions for culturing the antagonist to obtain the maximum antibiotic activity were determined using different culture media, initial medium acidity, and incubation periods for which yeast -malt extract agar with the initial acidity of pH 5 and over 13 days culture were best. Antibiotic substances extracted by methanol had 2 main fractions, KB-8A and KB-8B, in thin layer chromatography (OLC) with Rf values of 0.35 and 0.67 in a solvent system of chloroform : methanol = 7 : 3. The fraction KB-8A wa purified further by XAD-2, silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and crystalization. Its minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were $12.8\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for F. oxysporum and Alternaria mali, $6.4\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Rhizoctonia solani, and $3.2\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for Phytophthora capsici. Soil drenching of antibiotic KB-8A in the concentrations of $13.0\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and $26.0\mu\textrm{g}$/ml effectively inhibited the Fusarium wilt of sesame in a greenhouse test, which appeared to be comparable to the fungicide benlate of $6.5\mu\textrm{g}$ a. i./ml.
This study was performed to measure the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of peptide extracts derived from the enzymatic proteolysis of Hanwoo Musculus longissimus (M. longissimus) during cold storage. Thermolysin (80 ppm, w/w) and protease type XIII (100 ppm, w/w) were injected separately or in combination for the enzymatic proteolysis of sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar proteins prior to storage at $5^{\circ}C$ (T1) or at $-1^{\circ}C$ (T2) in a chilling room for 9 days. Beef injected with thermolysin (E2) and thermolysin+protease type XIII (E3) showed a significantly higher degree of hydrolysis at both storage temperatures (p<0.05). During the storage period, T1E2 at day 6 and T1E3 at day 9 showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity with sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar protein proteolysates. Macromolecules greater than 10,000 Da were removed by ultra filtration, and the filtrates were separated into fractions using gel filtration. Five and three major fractions were collected from S-T1E2-6 and M-T1E3-9 extracts, respectively, and the $4^{th}$ fraction of the S-T1E2-6 extracts showed the highest ACE inhibitory rate of $61.96{\pm}7.41%$.
The effect of polyamine on chlorophyll amount, chloroplast peroxidase and chloroplast thylakoid protein in rice leaf segments which were grown for 10 days(16 hrs, light : 8 hrs, dark) in a hormone-free MS medium containing polyamine was studied. Polyamine treatment increased the chlorophyll contents compared with the control in rice leaf segments. Especially spermine was most effective. Also, in rice leaf segments treated with polyamine chloroplast peroxidase activity was higher than in the control. The treatment with lmM of spermidine increased the enzyme activity by 100%. In polyamine treatment and control two major polypeptide bands corresponding to 56 and 25Kd molecular weight were clearly resolved with other minor bands by SDS-PAGE in the insoluble protein fraction. However, in these bands (56, 25Kd), the total area of protein in treating with polyamine were higher than that of the control. These results suggest that polyamine was an important factor in the chloroplast development of rice seedlings.
Purpose: To investigate and compensate the effects of respiration-induced B0 variations on fat quantification of the bone marrow in the lumbar spine. Materials and Methods: Multi-echo gradient echo images with navigator echoes were obtained from eight healthy volunteers at 3T clinical scanner. Using navigator echo data, respiration-induced B0 variations were measured and compensated. Fat fraction maps were estimated using $T2^*$-IDEAL algorithm from the uncompensated and compensated images. For manually drawn bone marrow regions, the estimated B0 variations and the calculated fat fractions (before and after compensations) were analyzed. Results: An increase of temporal B0 variations from inferior level to superior levels was observed for all subjects. After compensation using navigator echo data, the effects of the B0 variations were reduced in gradient echo images. The calculated fat fractions show significant differences (P < 0.05) in L1 and L3 between the uncompensated and the compensated. Conclusion: The results of this study raise the need for considering respiration-induced B0 variations for accurate fat quantification using gradient echo images in the lumbar spine. The use of navigator echo data can be an effective way for the reduction of the effects of respiratory motion on the quantification.

To evaluate energy efficiency and partition of nutrients, 32 piglets were weaned at 14 d of age and individually fed diets containing 15% fat from coconut oil (CO, medium chain saturated), high oleate sunflower oil (HOSO, n-9 series), soybean oil (SO, n-6 series), or linseed oil plus fish oil, (LF, n-3 series). After 4 weeks, the subjects were sacrificed to evaluate empty body composition and apparent ileal digestibility with the slaughter method. No statistical effect of dietary fat sources on growth was observed. The digestibility of fat from the coconut oil diet was higher than fats from the diets containing high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. The efficiency of use of metabolizable energy for growth averaged 63% and was not affected by the diet. Dietary fat composition was reflected strongly in backfat. Total body neutral and polar fatty acids were influenced too. For the whole body phospholipid fraction the ratio of n-6 to n-3 and the double bond index were 4.3, 5.8, 7.2, 0.78 and 69, 87, 89, 87 for CO, HOSO, SO, and LF respectively. These results show that for the coconut oil diet the degree of unsaturation of phospholipids in the body was lower and that, in the other diets, it did not differ, but double bond index was maintained with different n-6 to n-3 ratios in carcass fat. On the whole the data on body fat composition indicate that the dietary fat tended to be deposited in similar quantity in the body, whatever was the dietary fatty acid profile.

Four rumen fistulated Murrah buffaloes were used to study the effect of four diets differing in roughage to concentrate ratio on rumen biochemical changes, microbial enzyme profile and in sacco degradability of feed in a $4{\times}4$ Latin Square design. The animals were fed four diets consisting of 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50 ratios of wheat straw and concentrate mixtures, respectively. Wheat straw and concentrate mixture were mixed with water (0.6 l/kg feed) and complete feed mixture was offered to the animals at 8:00 h and 16:00 h in two equal parts. The variation in pH of rumen liquor (difference of maximum and minimum during 0-8 h post feeding) increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the diet. There was no effect of diet composition on volatile fatty acids, total nitrogen and trichloro-acetic acid precipitable nitrogen in the rumen liquor, but ammonia nitrogen increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the ration. Major portions of all fibre degrading enzymes were present in the particulate material (PM) of the rumen contents, but protease was absent in PM fraction. The activities of micro-crystalline cellulase, acetyl esterase and protease increased with increase in the level of concentrate mixture, but the activities of other enzymes (carboxymethylcellulase, filter paper degrading activity, xylanase, $\beta$-glucosidase and $\beta$-xylosidase) were not affected. The in sacco degradability and effective degradability of feeds increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the ration.
During two years, four samples per year were collected in Vietnam from rice bran, cassava residue, brewer's grain, tofu residue, soybean meal, coconut cake, sweet potato vines and water spinach for chemical analysis and assessment of water holding capacity (WHC). The selected feedstuffs represent fibre-rich plant sources and agro-industry co-products commonly used in pig feeding in Vietnam. The content (g/kg DM) of crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) varied between feedstuffs and ranged from 21 to 506 for CP, from 14 to 118 for EE and from 197 to 572 for NSP. Cassava residue had a high starch content of 563 g/kg DM, while sweet potato vines, water spinach, coconut cake and soybean meal had a high content of sugars (63-71 g/kg DM). The content of individual neutral sugars varied between feed ingredients, with the highest content of arabinose, galactose and glucose in tofu residue, the highest content of xylose in brewer's grain and the highest content of mannose in coconut cake. The content of uronic acid was high for cassava residue, tofu residue, sweet potato vines and water spinach (57-88 g/kg DM). The content of soluble non-cellulosic polysaccharides (S-NCP) was positively correlated ($r^2$ = 0.82) to the WHC. The content (g/kg DM) of CP, NDF, neutral sugars, total NSP, total NCP, S-NCP and total dietary fibre in tofu residue, water spinach and coconut cake varied (p<0.05) between years. In conclusion, diet formulation to pigs can be improved if the variation in chemical composition of the fibre fraction and in WHC between potential feed ingredients is taken into account.
