Serious issues about the changes in the environmental conditions on earth associated with human activities have arisen, and the interest in these problems has increased. It is urgent to determine how the expansion of terrestrial UV-B radiation due to the stratospheric ozone depletion influences living matters. In this connection, we have been investigating the effects of UV-B radiation on the growth of rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.). We report here some physiological and genetic aspects of resistance to inhibitory effects of UV-B radiation on growth of rice cultivars as described below. Elevated UV radiation containing large amount of UV-B and a small amount of UV-C inhibited the development of plant height, the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll content in rice plants in a phytotron. Similar results were obtained in experiments, in which elevated UV-V radiation. Similar results were obtained in experiments, in which elevated UV-B radiation (transmission down to 290 nm) was applied instead of UV-B radiation containing a small amount of UV-C. The inhibitory effects of UV radiation was alleviated by the elevated CO2 atmospheric environment or by the exposure to the high irradiance visible radiation. The latter suggested the possibility that the resistance to the effects of UV radiation was either due to a lower sensitivity to UV radiation or to a greater ability to recover from the injury caused by UV radiation through the exposure to visible radiation. The examination of cultivar differences in the resistance to UV radiation-caused injuries among 198 rice cultivars belonging to 5 Asian rice ecotypes (aus, aman, boro, bulu and tjeleh) from the Bengal region and Indonesia and to Japanese lowland and upland rice groups showed the following: Various cultivars having different sensitivities to the effects of UV radiation were involved in the same ecotype and the same group, and that the Japanese lowland rice group and the boro ecotype were more resistant. Among Japanese lowland rice cultivars, Sasanishiki (one of the leading varieties in Japan) exhibited more resistance to UV rakiation, while Norin 1 showed less resistance, although these two cultivars are closely related. It was thus indicated that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation of rice cultivars is not simply due to the difference in the geographical situation where rice cultuvars are cultivated. Form the genetic analysis of resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation on growth of rice using F2 plants generated by reciprocally crossing Sasanishiki and Norin 1 and F3 lines generated by self-fertilizing F2 plants, it was evident that the resistance to the inhibitory of elebated UV radiation in these rice plants was controlled by recessive polygenes.
Silicone rubbers are elastomeric materials and organic copolymers, of which backbone is siloxane with high bonding strength. Silicone rubbers have been used as an power insulator because they are well weather proof, ozone proof and have excellent electric characteristics, thermal stability, cold resistance and low surface energy. Especially, it is known that they have very excellent characteristics at 200[$^{\circ}C$]. For this study, we made silicone rubbers as specimens and measured volume resistivity due to applied voltage and a variation of temperature 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 180[$^{\circ}C$]. Also we measured dielectric loss tangent due to applied voltage at temperature range 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 180[$^{\circ}C$] and frequency range 20[Hz] to 1${\times}10^6$[Hz].
Recently, a number of countries are now considering the reuse of effluents from wastewater treatment for various water applications. To improve the reuse of wastewater effluent, the development of appropriate micro-pollutant removal technology is necessary. Although several researche have been studied for removing micro-pollutants in water, little study has been conducted for the removal of emerging contaminant such as antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) by disinfection processes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the capacity of disinfection technologies such as chlorination, ozone, and electron beam, for removing antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and ARGs. Based on this study, better ARG removal can be achieved by ozonation and electron beam. Relatively, high CT values of chlorination or ozonation are needed to remove ARB and ARG compared to conventional pathogens.
As a series of the studies of EPDM-polymer blonds, the experiments are concentrated to the investigation of the physical properties of the EPDM-BR blends. The results are shown as follows: 1. In blending, tensile strength and elongation decreased with increase in EPDM contents. 2. The resistance for aging and ozone were much improved after blending. It was effective more :han the ratio of EPDM/BR is 50/50. 3. Tear strength is less influenced after blending and rebound character decreased with increase in EPDM contents.
The purpose of this dissertation is to compare bound andtioxidant, MHPPD with the ordinary one, IPPD, when high polymers are used like NR and SBR. The effect of rubber bound antioxidant and ordinary antioxidant on the Mooney scorch time has been studied by means of the Mooney viscometer. The ageing properties of vulcanizates containing rubber-bound antioxidant and ordinary antioxidant have been studied in terms of hardness, tensile strength and elongation. The results of the Mooney scorch time and ageing properties are as follows: When MHPPD was mixed with NR or SBR compounds, the Mooney scorch time was faster than the IPPD compounds. Also the ageing properties of the vulcanizates containing MHPPD were much superior to the IPPD compounds. Furthermore, the vulcanizates comporised of MHPPD have taken andvantage of and resistance in the ozone test.
Compared with NR and HNBR compounds, the blend properties of NR/HNBR were studied. The heat, oil and ozone resistance of NR compounds were improved by blending HNBR, and these effects were more clearly revealed with elevating temperatures. For the overall stabilities of the compounds, it was resonable to use the carbon black under the 60phr. In the EV systems, high-saturated NR/HNBR and HNBR compounds showed similar total crosslink density in comparison with NR compounds. Interaction parameters calculated by stress-strain method showed widely varied value.
The purpose of this study is to establish an effective way to utilize the application of EPDM-Polymer blends. First of all, the physical properties for EPDM/NR blends and compounding agents were studied. The results are shown as follows: 1. In blending, tensile strength and tear strength decreased with increase in EPDM contents. It was not effective more than the ratio of EPDM/NR is 50/50. 2. Elongation is influenced by blending, especially the ratio of EPDM/NR is 50/50. 3. It was found that both the resistance for ozone and aging were much improved after blending.

The physical properties of chloroprene rubber (CR) compounds reinforced with networked silicas were investigated by comparing them to those reinforced with conventional silica to observe the effect of the organic connection bonds combining silica particles on their cure, tensile, and aging performance. The introduction of networked silica to CR increase in silica content to 80 phr in rubber, while the content of conventional silica was limited to 60 phr. The CR compounds reinforced with networked silica showed higher resistance to combustion. The gradual increases in delta torque, Mooney viscosity, and modulus of silica-filled CR compounds with silica content were mainly attributed to the specific interaction between the chlorine atoms of CR and the hydroxyl groups of silica. The CR compounds reinforced with networked silica showed low compression set and heat build-up and maintained their high modulus even after thermal, oil, and ozone aging.
The intention of this study is to investigate the properties of polymer blend, NBR/PVC vulcanizates and blending procedures such as roll-mixing temperatures and sequences for polymer blending of NBR and PVC(resin type). The results obtained are as follows: 1. The roll temperature applied for polymer blending is around $150^{\circ}C$. At this temperature region, the degradation of rubber stock, which may be caused by heat, can be minimized and mill processing in practical application in industries can also be facilitated. 2. It is obviously necessary that a small amount of plasticizers should be added to the stock for improving processibility of roll mixing and physical properties. 3. On roll-mixing sequence, it is more effective that PVC compounded with plasticizer is added to NBR milled on hot roll. 4. The vulcanizates of the blends with different degree of polymerization of PVC ale similar to one another in properties. 5. NBR/PVC(70/30) blends shows the better physical characters than eve,-made foreign latex blend except abrasion-resistance. 6. As PVC addition ratio is increased, the physical properties such as resistance to ozone, tear, heat and oil and tensile strength, modulus, hardness have also improved, on the other hand, tension set and rebound character decreased. 7. The curve of ultimate elongation have point of inflection at the ratio of $30\sim40$ part of PVC. 8. While CR is blended, the physical properties such as brittle point, rebound and resistance to oil in high temperature have improved. 9. Polymer blend of NBR and domestic PVC is applied for the industrial utility such as rubber sole and heel, electric wire cover and oil-resistant packing, coating and gasket, printing roll, film for food packing etc.
In this study, double bond, unsaturated group was introduced to the main chain of EVA by chemically treating EVA, nondiene polymer. Benzene sulfonic acid, ENB and DCPD were used as a third element. Also, from blending CR and SBR, conventional synthetic rubber we prepared vulcanizates and examined their physical properties. The datum lead to the following conclusion that some problems were modified; limited temperature in use and mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, tensile stress, and elongation rate of thermoplastic EVA, keeping the following advantages of original EVA; green strength, injection molding by Pressure, adhesion, tackiness, dimensional stability, and ozone resistance, etc. It is expected that continuous research of the modification between nondiene and diene polymer will improve what were shown disadvantages in synthetic polymer; processing, oxidation resistance, and adhesion. In addition, it will be possible to continue process of rubber products by utilizing possible fluidity for fusion of EVA.
