In water treatment plant the Dissolved Ozone Flotation(DOF) System may be employed because this system has various abilities, such that it can remove SS using microbubbles, and it can exert strong oxidation power in removing taste and odor, color, and microbial agents. In order to investigate effectiveness of the DOF system in water treatment, removal characteristics of various water quality parameters were observed depending on the different levels of ozone concentrations. Removal efficiencies of water quality parameters in DOF system were compared with those in DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) system and in CGS(Conventional Gravity Settling) system. Optimum ozone dose obtained in the pilot experiments was 2.7 mg/L. With increasing ozone dose higher than 2.7 mg/L, removal rates of turbidity, KMnO$_4$ consumption, UV$_{254}$ absorbance, and TOC were reversely lowered. High concentration of ozone dissociate organic matter in water, so that increasing dissolved organic level in effluent. Removal rates of water quality parameters at optimum ozone dose were obtained, such that removal rates of turbidity, KMnO$_4$ consumption, TOC, and UV$_{254}$ asorbance were 88.9%, 62.9%, 47%, and 77.3% respectively. Removal rate of THMFP was 51.6%. For all the parameters listed above, the DOF system was more effective than the DAF system or the CGS system. It is found that the DOF system may be used in advanced water treatment not only because the DOF system is more efficient in removing water quality parameters than the existing systems, but because the DOF system is also required smaller area than the CGS system for the treatment plant.

Purpose: Measure the ozone level in the treatment room while treating a patient so want to know the degree of contamination caused by ozone occurrence. Materials and Methods: Use the linear accelerator (Clinac 21EX, Varian, USA) with the ozone meter (series-200, aeroQual, New Zealand) and water phantom (Wellhofer, IBA, Germany) is irradiated the radiation so that measured the ozone generation level according to MU, dose-rate, SSD, field size, energy, delay time and put the ozone meter in the treatment room actually while treating a patient so measured the daily ozone level variation. Results: While irradiating the radiation, degree of ozone contamination wasn't affected by the energy but mostly in case of electron beam, ozone level was higher than photon beam. The higher dose-rate (0.016~0.025 ppm/hr), the farther SSD (0.018~0.030 ppm/hr), the wider field sizes (0.016~0.025 ppm/hr), the more MU (0.018~0.046 ppm/hr), it occurred high ozone level. Ozone decrement according to delay time changed the background level (0.016 ppm/hr) after elapsed time of 10 minutes from irradiating radiation. And daily ozone occurrence level in the treatment room was below ozone standard level 0.1 ppm/hr (average:0.06 ppm/8 hr) but it could confirm that ozone generation level was included the level (max:0.038 ppm/hr) above 0.02 ppm/hr which patient could perceive. Conclusion: Through ozone level according to variation of certain conditions, actually in the treatment room ozone generation level didn't damaged to patients or workers. Commonly peoples think that ozone was harmful gas but it thought that small amount of ozone generation level while treating a patient was beneficial in the treatment room through air purge action of pathogenic germ or virus sterilization.

This study gives the optimal reaction conditions, reaction mechanisms, reaction rates leaded from the oxidation of phenol by electron beam accelerator and ozone used for recent water treatment. It gives the new possibility of water treatment process to effectively manage industrial sewage containing toxic organic compounds and biological refractory materials. The high decomposition of phenol was observed at the low dose rate, but at this low dose rate, the reaction time was lengthened. So we must find out the optimal dose rate to promote high oxidation of reactants. The reason why the TOC value of aqueous solution wasn't decreased at the low dose was that there were a lot of low molecular organic acids as an intermediates such as formic acid or glyoxalic acid. In order to use both electron beam accelerator and biological treatment for high concentration refractory organic compounds, biological treatment is needed when low molecular organic compounds exist abundantly in sewage. In this experiment, the condition of making a lot of organic acids is from 5 kGy into 20 kGy dose. Decomposition rate of phenol by electron beam accelerator was first order reaction up to 300ppm phenol solution on the basic of TOC value and also showed first order reaction by using both air and ozone as an oxidants.
Pd/activated carbon (Pd/AC) and Pd/alumina (Pd/AO) catalysts were prepared by the impregnation of palladium into activated carbon and alumina. The catalytic characteristics according to the kinds of support materials were compared. The decomposition efficiencies of ozone according to kinds of support materials are about the same when these were compared by adding 10 g of catalysts into the water saturated with ozone. The decomposition efficiencies and the oxidation characteristics (TOC, $COD_{Cr}$) of dichloroacetic acid were compared with the ozone only process and the catalytic ozonations using Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalysts. The decomposition efficiencies of dichloroacetic acid by catalytic ozonations were better than the one by ozone only process, but there was slight difference of the one between Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalyst. The decomposition efficiency of dichloroacetic acid was increased with increasing ozone dose at a constant concentration of dichloroacetic acid, but the one was little increased with increasing ozone dose at more than 1.0 L/min of ozone dose. It was seemed that the bicarbonate and the chloric ion formed throughout the decomposition of dichloroacetic acid acted as the scavenger of hydroxyl radical.

This research was to determine and compare the inactivation of total coliform as the indicator organism with chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone for drinking water treatment. The inactivation of total coliform was experimentally analyzed for the dose of disinfectant, contact time, pH, Temperature and DOC. The experiments for the characterization of inactivation were performed in a series of batch processes with the total coliform as a general indicator organism based on chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone as disinfectants. The nearly 2.4, 3.0, 3.9 log inactivation of total coliform killed by injecting 1mg/L at 5 minutes for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone. For the inactivation of 99.9%, Disinfectants required were 1.70, 1.00 and 0.60 mg/L for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone, respectively. The bactericidal effects of disinfectants were decreased as the pH increased in the range of pH 6-9. The influence of pH change on the killing effect of chlorine dioxide was not strong, but that on ozone and free chlorine was sensitive. The bactericidal effects of the disinfectants were increased as the temperature increase. The activation energies were 36,053, 29,822, 24,906 J/mol of chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone for coliforms. The inactivation effects were shown in the lowest order of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone.
We studied on the decoloring efficiency of a dying and finishing industrial wastewater containing reactive dyes in the ozone treatment system. The wastewater containing reactive dyes improved the decolorization by the ozone oxidation. In order to determine the optical conditions for ozonation, various operation factors such as initial wastewater concentrations, pH, temperature, and ozone dose were evaluated. Ozone utilization rate was improved in general with the increase of initial concentration of wastewater. And the decolorization speed or reactive dyes was more decreased in deep color of blue series than in light color such as yellow series. The colorization of wastewater containing reactive dyes was changed step through midle color depending upon increasing of ozone treated time. The efficiency of decolorization for wastewater was improved with the pH increased and the temperature of ozone treatment system decreased.
Ozone, a powerful oxidant, is widely used to remove microorganisms, pesticides, taste and odor compounds effectively. Dissolved air flotation (OAF) has been known as an economical process for treating algae and low turbid water quality. An ozoflotation system, combining ozone and OAF processes, has a merit which can operate the ozonation and flotation process simultaneously in a single compartment. This study investigated the application of the ozoflotation process for advanced water treatment by carrying out the pilot-plant experiment. During the test, ozone microbubbles were generated through a OAF pump and many kinds of parameters were evaluated under several conditions, such as raw water flow rate and ozone dose. As a result of the test, the optimum operating conditions of ozoflotation were decided to be 1.2 mg/L ozone dose and about 34 minute Hydraulic retention time (HRT). Finally, it could be demonstrated that the ozoflotation system can effectively improve the drinking water quality.

Recently, the ozone treatment of wasting activated sludge has become one of the effective and feasible process for the sludge reduction. The objective of this study is to investigate the availability of ozonized wasting sludge on external carbon sources 13r phosphorus release. Experiment results showed that the ozone treatment of activated sludge could produce a large amount of VFA such as acetic acid and isobutyric acid. For example, 50.24 mg/L acetic acid was produced with the ozone dose of 0.05 g $O_3/g$ SS, and 123.56 mg/L acetic acid with 0.5 g $O_3/g$ SS. The higher ozone dose was applied, the more VFA was produced from sludge reduction into a limited point. Finally, using ozonated sludge as only carbon source, the batch experiment, to measure phosphorus release rate in anaerobic condition were performed. The specific phosphorus release rates were investigated as 0.94, 1.37, 1.48, 1.68 mg P/g VSS/hr with ozone dose of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 g $O_3/g$ SS, respectively. Considering the degree of mineralization, VFA production, phosphorus release rate, and economical aspect, the optimal ozone dose for sludge reduction and using carbon sources ranged from 0.05 to 0.1 g $O_3/g$ SS.
Ozone/UV combined process is an effective technique to enhance generation of OH radical which is non-selective and powerful oxidant. The objective of this study is to evaluate the inactivation rates of B. subtilis spores by three candidate processes (ozone alone, UV alone, ozone/UV combined processes) at 4 and $20^{\circ}$ and to investigate the effects of OH radical on inactivation of B. subtilis spores. On the UV alone process, required UV dosages for lag phase and 3-log inactivation of B. subtilis spores were determined as $8.9mJ/cm^2$ and $47mJ/cm^2$. However, the inactivation of B. subtilis spores didn't occured beyond 4.5-log inactivation despite increasing UV dose. The inactivation of B. subtilis spores by ozone alone and ozone/UV combined process was investigated with ozone CT (Concentration of disinfectant ${\times}$ Contact time) concept. As a result, inactivation of B. subtilis spores by ozone/UV combined process was faster than by ozone alone, and especially $CT_{lag}$ value B. subtilis spores in the presence and absence of t-BuOH, OH radical scavenger, was investigated to evaluate effects of OH radical formed during ozone/UV combined process. We found that OH radical plays important roles on inactivation of B. subtilis spores.
Ground-level ozone ($O_3$) can be a menace for vegetation, especially in Asia where $O_3$ levels have been dramatically increased over the past decades. To ensure food security and maintain forest ecosystem services, such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and functional diversity of soil biota, in the over-populated Asia, environmental standards are needed. To set proper standards, dose-response relationships should be established from which critical levels are derived. The predictor of the response in the dose-response relationship is an $O_3$ metric that indicates the dose level to which the plant has been exposed. This study aimed to review the relevant scientific literature and summarize the $O_3$ metrics used worldwide to provide insights for Asia. A variety of $O_3$ metrics have been used, for which we discuss their strengths and weaknesses. The most widely used metrics are based only on $O_3$ levels. Such metrics have been adopted by several regulatory agencies in the global. However, they are biologically irrelevant because they ignore the plant physiological capacity. Adopting AOT40 ($O_3$ mixing ratios Accumulated Over the Threshold of $40nmol\;mol^{-1}$) as the default index for setting critical levels in Asia would be a poor policy with severe consequences at national and Pan-Asian level. Asian studies should focus on flux-based $O_3$ metrics to provide relevant bases for developing proper standards. However, given the technical requirements in calculating flux-based $O_3$ metrics, which can be an important limitation in developing countries, no-threshold cumulative exposure indices like AOT0 should always accompany flux-based indices.
