Direct, continuous, and accurate measurements of solar ultraviolet irradiance (290-400 nm: UVR) have been carried out since 1990, by using both band-spectral ultraviolet-B (290-320 nm: UV-B) and ultraviolet-A (320-400 nm: UV-A) radiometers at Tokai University in Hiratsuka, Japan (35$^{\circ}$N, 139$^{\circ}$E). From our observations, the following findings are provided: 1) an increasing trend in solar UV -B from Oct. 1990 to Sept. 2000; 2) a regional comparison of solar UVR in Japan; 3) the distinct characteristics of UV-B and UV-A irradiance, such as diffuse property, daily and seasonal variation; and 4) human body protection against solar UVR. An increasing 10-year trend in global solar UV - B in Hiratsuka corresponded to a decrease in the total ozone amount measured at Tsukuba (36$^{\circ}$N, 140$^{\circ}$E), giving supportive evidence for a direct link between these two parameters. Furthermore, a strong correlation was found between solar UV-B and total ozone amount from results of UVR measurements at four Tokai University monitoring stations dispersed throughout Japan. Additional results revealed different diffuse properties in global solar UV and in global solar total (300-3000 nm: Total) irradiances. For example, in the global UVR, the diffuse component was dominant: about 80 % independent of weather, with more than 60 % of global UV-B, and more than 50% of global UV-A with even a cloudless clear sky. On the other hand, the portion of the diffuse in the global total irradiance was very low, less than 10 % on a cloudless clear day. Daily and seasonal variations of UV -B and UV -A irradiances were found to be quite different, because of the marked dependence of UV -B irradiance on the atmospheric ozone amount. Moreover, UV -B irradiance showed large daily and seasonal variations: the ratio between maximum and minimum irradiances was more than 5. In contrast, the variation in UV-A was small: the ratio between maximum and minimum was less than 2. Three important facts are proposed concerning solar UVR protection of the human body: 1) the personal minimal erythema dose (MED); 2) gender based difference in MED values; and 3) proper colors for UVR protective clothing.
The depletion of stratospheric ozone is regarded as a major environmental threat to plant growth and ecosystem. The ozone depletion has caused plants to be exposed to an increased penetration of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in the 280-320 nm wavelength range. Enhanced UV-B radiation may have influence on plants biological functions in many aspects including inhibition of photosynthesis, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, changes in morphology, phenology, and biomass accumulation. To cope with the damage by UV radiation, plants have evolved to have protective mechanisms, such as photorepair, accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds, leaf thickening and activation of antioxidative enzymes. The objective of this review is to address the effects of enhanced UV-B on plant growth, UV-B action mechanisms and protection and protection mechanisms in plants.

Adhesion and mechanical reliability of silicon/epoxy/polyimide interfaces are critical issues for flexible electronics. Bonds between these interfaces are mainly hydrogen bonds, so their adhesion is weaker than cohesive fracture toughness and vulnerable to moisture. In order to enhance adhesion and suppress moisture-assisted debonding, UV/Ozone treatment and innovative sol-gel derived hybrid layers were applied to silicon/epoxy/polyimide interfaces. The fracture energy and subcritical crack growth rate were measured by using a double cantilever beam (DCB) fracture mechanics test. Results showed that UV/Ozone treatment increased the adhesion, but was not effective for improving reliability against humidity. However, by applying sol-gel derived hybrid layers, adhesion increase as well as suppresion of moisture-assisted cracking were achieved.

An organic field-effect transistor (OFET) was fabricated using a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as the active layer on the silicon substrate. The CuPc FET device was configured as a top-contact type. The substrate temperature was room temperature. The CuPc thickness was 40 nm, and the channel length and channel width were 100 ${\mu}m$ 3 mm, respectively. Typical current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the CuPc FET were observed and subsequently compared to the UV/ozone treatment on substrate surface.
The Korean sounding rockets(KSR) 1, 2 equigped with the UV optical detectors have been launched at An-heung, Chungchongnam-do, of June 4 and September 1, 1993,respectively. The UV detector is used to measure the attenuation of solar UV radiation for various frequency bards in the stratospgere. We obtained the profile of the ozone number density within the altitulde of 15 - 30 km by applying the Beer-Lambert law. It is found that the maHimum of the ozone distribution occurs near 2sht which is quite consistent with the mean value in the mid-latituderegions. We will also compare our results froiu KSR 1,2 with the other observational data from the Dobson speceo meter at Yonsei Univ. and the LIDAa which were performed simultaneously with the sounding rocket experiments.
In this study we investigated the electrical properties of ZnO-based MOS capacitor with $HfO_2$ as the gate dielectric. MIM capacitor, which uses either $HfO_2$ or $Al_2O_3$ as the dielectric layer, is also studied to understand the dependency of the dielectrics on the preparation conditions. It was found that thinner $HfO_2$ films yield better electrical properties, namely lower leakage current and higher breakdown electric field. These properties were observed to deteriorate when subsequently annealed. Capacitance in the depletion region of MOS capacitor was found to increase with UV ozone treatment time up to 60min. However, when the treatment time was extended to 120min, the trend is reversed. The 'threshold voltage' was also observed to positively shift with UV ozone treatment time up to 60min. The shift apparently saturated for longer treatment.
In order to photocatalytically treat organic matter (CODCr) and chromaticity effectively, chemical coagulation and sedimentation processes were employed as a pretreatment of the leachate produced from landfill in Jeju Island. This was performed using FeCl3·6H2O as a coagulant. For the treated leachate, UV/TiO2 and UV/TiO2/H2O2 systems were investigated, using 4 types of UV lamps, including an ozone lamp (24 W), TiO2 as a photocatalyst, and/or H2O2 as an initiator or inhibitor for photocatalytic degradation. In the chemical coagulation and sedimentation process using FeCl3·6H2O, optimum removal was achieved with an initial pH of 6, and a coagulant dosage of 2.0 g/L, culminating in the removal of 40% CODCr and 81% chromaticity. For the UV/TiO2 system utilizing an ozone lamp and 3 g/L of TiO2, the optimum condition was obtained at pH 5. However, the treated CODCr and chromaticity did not meet the emission standards (CODCr: 400 mg/L, chromaticity: 200 degrees) in a clean area. However, for a UV/TiO2/H2O2 system using 1.54 g/L of H2O2 in addition to the above optimum UV/TiO2 system, the results were 395 mg/L and 160 degrees, respectively, which were within the emission standard limits. The effect of the UV lamp on the removal of CODCr, and chromaticity of the leachate decreased in the order of ozone (24 W) lamp > 254 nm (24 W) lamp > ozone (14 W) lamp > 254 nm (14 W) lamp. Only CODCr and chromaticity treated with the ozone (24 W) lamp met the emission standards.

A radiative transfer model with two-stream/delta-Eddington approximation has been developed to calculate the vertical distributions of atmospheric heating rates and radiative fluxes. The performance of the model has been evaluated by comparison with the results of ICRCCM (Intercomparison of radiative codes in climate models). It has been demonstrated that the presented model has a capability to calculate the solar radiation not only accurately but also economically. The characteristics of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-320nm) are examined by comparison of relation between the flux at the top of atmosphere and that at the surface. The relation of UV-B is quadratic due to the strong ozone absorption in this band. Also, the dependence of the UV-B radiation on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption has been tested with various solar zenith angles. The surface UV-B increases as the solar zenith angle increases. The existence of stratospheric aerosols causes an increase in the planetary albedo due to the aerosols' backscattering. The planetary albedo with aerosol's effect has been increases as the solar zenith angle is not sensitive. It may be caused by the fact that the aerosols' scattering effect becomes saturated with the relatively long path length in a large solar zenith angle. Finally, the regional impact of stratospheric aerosols due to volcanic eruption on the intensity of UV-B radiation at the surface has been estimated. A direct effect is that the flux is diminished at the low latitudes, while it is enhanced in the high latitudes by the aerosols' photon trap or twilight effect. In the high latitudes, both aerosols' scattering and ozone absorption have strong and opposite impacts to the surface UV-B radiation is located at the mid-latitudes during spring season in both hemispheres.
In the tungsten industry as light source material, tungsten filament which used as light source material could form after molybdenumwire which used as the center supporter for coil shape tungsten wire was removed. This process uses hydrogen peroxide, Ozone and UV(Ultraviolet)Lamp, for the quantity of hydrogen peroxide decrease. The results were as follows : 1. An incandescent electric Lamp type : FL(FL-20) type : A standard of commodity (P.W.: $19{\pm}1.0mg$, $C.R:4.5{\pm}0.3{\Omega}$) 1) Only hydrogen peroxide treated ; Reaction Time : 65Min., P.W.: 18.60mg, $C.R.:4.60{\Omega}$ 2) Ozone/Ultraviolet/70% of hydrogen peroxide; Reaction Time : 64Min., P.W.: 18.61mg, C.R.: $4.61{\Omega}$ 2. A Fluorescent Lamp Type : GLS(GLS-40) Type : A standard of commodity(P.W.: $11.8{\pm}0.2mg$$65{\pm}1.5{\Omega}$) 1) Only hydrogen peroxide treated ; Reaction Time: 72Min, P.W.:11.88mg, C.R.: $65.62\Omega$ 2) Ozone/Ultraviolet/70% of hydrogen peroxide;Reaction Time:71Min., P.W.:11.88mg, C.R.: $65.63\Omega$

In water treatment plant the Dissolved Ozone Flotation(DOF) System may be employed because this system has various abilities, such that it can remove SS using microbubbles, and it can exert strong oxidation power in removing taste and odor, color, and microbial agents. In order to investigate effectiveness of the DOF system in water treatment, removal characteristics of various water quality parameters were observed depending on the different levels of ozone concentrations. Removal efficiencies of water quality parameters in DOF system were compared with those in DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) system and in CGS(Conventional Gravity Settling) system. Optimum ozone dose obtained in the pilot experiments was 2.7 mg/L. With increasing ozone dose higher than 2.7 mg/L, removal rates of turbidity, KMnO$_4$ consumption, UV$_{254}$ absorbance, and TOC were reversely lowered. High concentration of ozone dissociate organic matter in water, so that increasing dissolved organic level in effluent. Removal rates of water quality parameters at optimum ozone dose were obtained, such that removal rates of turbidity, KMnO$_4$ consumption, TOC, and UV$_{254}$ asorbance were 88.9%, 62.9%, 47%, and 77.3% respectively. Removal rate of THMFP was 51.6%. For all the parameters listed above, the DOF system was more effective than the DAF system or the CGS system. It is found that the DOF system may be used in advanced water treatment not only because the DOF system is more efficient in removing water quality parameters than the existing systems, but because the DOF system is also required smaller area than the CGS system for the treatment plant.
