  • Chemical oxidation of humic acid by ozonation process was investigated in the batch reactor. Aldehydes and ketone were identified as PFBOA derivatives in ozonated humic acid solutions using gas chromatography with PDECD. The formaldehyde was as a main by-product of ozonation. The characteristics of the formaldehyde production were discussed with respect to concentration at different experimental conditions.

Effect of Ozonation on Removal of Dissolved Organic Matter by Granular Activated Carbon Process (오존공정이 입상활성탄공정에서 용존유기물질의 제거에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ozonation as pretreatment on the removal of dissolved or biodegradable organic matter(DOM or BOM), the variance of DOM fractionation, and microbial regrowth by pilot-scale granular activated carbon processes in which adsorption and biodegradability was proceeding due to long time operation. Regardless of point of ozonation applied, GAC processes with ozonation(i.e., Ozonation combined with GAC Filter-adsorber; Pre O$_3$ + F/A, Ozonation combined with GAC adsorber; Post O$_3$ + GAC) compared with GAC processes without ozonation(i.e., GAC Filter-adsorber; F/A, GAC adsorber; GAC) removed approximately 10 to 20% more of DOC, hydrophilic DOM(HPI), BDOC and AOC after long period of operation that biological activity was assumed to happen. Ozonation was not found to have a significant effect on the removal of DOC, but caused the decrease of AOC by approximately 20%. It was found that the fixed bacterial biomass on GAC media did not show a significant difference between the GAC with ozonation and GAC without ozonation as pre-treatment, whereas the HPC of column effluent was more biostable at Post O$_3$ + GAC compared with F/A or GAC.

  • In this paper, ozonation of humic acid in water was characterized using $UV_{254}$ absorbance, TOC, Ultra Filtration and $^{13}C-NMR$. Also, carbonyl compounds in ozonated water were analyzed by GC/MS using PFBOA method. Ozonation by-products of water containing humic acid were determined as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, glyoxal and methylglyoxal. Results of $UV_{254}$ absorbance and TOC with ozonation time at humic acid 20, 100ppm represent that decrease rate of 80% within ozonation time is 20 min and TOC removal rate of 40-50% within ozonation time is 30 min. Results for $^{13}C-NMR$ and Ultra Filtration, humic acid of high molecular weight by ozonation are oxidated and decomposed so that it was conversed low molecular weight such as aldehydes, carboxylic acid.

Control of postharvest fungal spoilage of kiwifruit with TiO$_2$ photocatalytic ozonation.

  • TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation was attempted to disinfect fungal pathogens causing postharvest spoilage of kiwifruits and to decompose fungicide residuals on kiwifruits. TiO$_2$Photocatalytic ozonation process synergistically degraded organic compound and inhibited conidial germination of the fungal pathogen compared to single treatment of ozonation or photocatalysis. The efficient control of fungal spoilage and degradation of residual fungicide on kiwifruits indicate that TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation is a very attractive method for postharvest disease control of kiwifruits as an alternative to fungicides application.

  • This study was carried out to compare ozonation with photocatalysis degradation for removal Geosmin of algae byproduct. The change of pH was decresed from 7.02 to 2.8 after contact time 480 minute for ozonation. In case of UV-germicidal lamp, pH was very quickly increased from 7.02 to 7.5, but Halogen lamp did very slowly change pH. Geosmin degradation ratio was as following, UV-germicidal lamp/TiO2(100mg/L) O3>UV-germicidal lamp/TiO2(50mg/L)>UV-germicidal lamp(10W)>halogen lamp(50W). Instead of TiO2 suspension solution, Geosmin degradation ratio was very low using hollow bead and pellet as coated TiO2. As a result of identifing byproducts, ozonation generated three species of aldehyde such as 3-Heptanone and three species of alcohol such as Heptanal, but photocatalysis formed 1, 14-Tetradecanediol infinitesimally.

  • Ozonation is an effective process in providing microbiologically safe drinking water. The operation of the ozonation stage is often based on disinfection criteria which include security factors, such as the CT criterion. This type of ozonation management, which mat include large safety margins, will no longer be possible, since formation of ozonation byproducts has to be avoided. In order to reduce the security factor, a computerized tool to predict with more accuracy inactivation of micro-organisms in the ozonation process has been developed.

  • The pine wood meal was ozonated in acidic water. A 91.3% of lignin and 13% of polysaccharides in pine wood meal were degraded with 180 min ozonation. The phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin in ozonated wood meals were increased with ozonation time. The vanillin content in nitrobenzene oxidation products of lignin is decreased with 10 min. ozonation and it was slightly increased with ozonation time. The sugar composition of ozonated wood meals showed that the hemicellulose was more susceptible to ozonation than cellulose. The crystallinity of ozonated wood meal was increased.

Reduced Post-Chlorine Dosage Required for Disinfection: Improvement with Ozonation and GAC Process (오존 및 입상활성탄 도입시 후염소 주입량 저감효과 분석)

  • This study was carried out to examine effect of post-chlorine dosage reduction by ozonation and GAC process in the field plant for 3years in the "G" water purification plant in Seoul. And it is to compare GAC with BAC process in removal effects of TOC, THMs, THMFP, $UV_{254}$. As a result, chlorine dosage of ozonation and GAC(=BAC) is less demand than GAC. Seasonal reduction of chlorine demand is from about 37% to 59% with BAC, and from 24 to 46% with GAC. Higher reduction in BAC could be achieved. The efficiency of chlorine demand reduction with ozonation was depending on the organic carbon removal. $UV_{254}$ concentration is less about 0.13~0.74L/mg.m in BAC than GAC. Therefore, the combination of ozonation and GAC was more effective in reducing post-chlorine than the single GAC. TOC was also monitored, and results show that a linear relationship between TOC and chlorine demand is appropriate under each treatment process. It means that removal of organic matter(TOC) from finished water is necessary to reduce post-chlorine dosage in clear well and to minimize order of chlorine in distribution systems.

A Critical Review for the Effect of Ozonation on Biodegradability in Drinking Water Treatment Systems (전오존처리에 의한 상수원수의 생물학적 처리효율제고에 관한 연구)

  • In an effort to prevent the formation of DBPs from disinfection and the microbial regrowth in distribution systems, the ozonation followed by biological filtration process in drinking water treatment train has been recently developed as an alternative process to reduce effectively water-born organic matter as precursor. There are, however, insufficient for the consistent information and data about the relation between ozone dosage based on organic surrogate parameter, TOC or DOC and effect of ozonation on BDOC formation. This study is to review critically for the effect of ozonation on biodegradability on the basis of published technical papers including the output from author's research laboratory. It truned out that : 1. ozonation in the presence of organic matter has a tendancy to increase in BDOC content, 2. the rate of BDOC formation was maximum below 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC of ozone dose, but about maximum content of BDOC was obtainable at the range from 1.5mg $O_3/mg$ DOC to 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, 3. from above 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, the rate of BDOC formation became slow down, 4. from above 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, BDOC formation was quantitatively negligible, In conclusion, it needs further systematic study and research concerned to biodegradability and treatability by ozonation in terms of organic characteristics and experimental conditions because it was hard to find out the consistent experimental data comparable each other that were performed by numbers of research authors.

The effect of iron ions on the reducing of natural organic matter and THMFP in ozonation (오존 처리 시 철 2가 이온이 자연유기물질과 트리할로메탄 저감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study focused on natural organic matter and trihalomethane removal by ozonation with various ferrous concentration in surface water. Ozonation is more affected by injection concentration than reaction time. dissolved organic carbon removal rates in ozonation increased with the increase in ferrous concentration. The highest removal was obtained at 6 mg/L of ferrous concentration. When 1 mg/L of ferrous was added with 2 mg/L of ozone concentration, it was found to be a rapid decrease in specific ultraviolet absorbance at the beginning of the reaction because ferrous acts as a catalyst for producing hydroxyl radical in ozonation. As ozone concentration increased, trihalomethane formation potential decreased. When 2 mg/L of ozone was injected, trihalomethane formation potential was shown to decrease and then increase again with the increase in ferrous concentration.
