The germination and the nutrient culture tests in the growth chamber and pot experiment under two types of soil conditions were conducted to determine the selectivity of oxyfluorfen and chlormethoxynil in crops and weeds and for characterization of selective mode of action, the absorption study was also conducted with different absorption methods and application time using $^{14}C$-oxyfluorfen. Oxyfluorfen showed more growth inhibitory effects than chlormethoxynil. In the nutrient culture test, rice growth was greatly inhibited at 2-leaf stage than at 4-leaf stage, and the shoot parts were more inhibited than the root parts. By preemergence application of both herbicides, higher growth inhibition was observed in sandy loam soil than in clay loam soil. Absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-oxyfluorfen were higher by foliar application than by root treatment, and selectivity of crops and weed species may be explained partly by the amount of absorption.
The study was intended to analyze the interaction effects of paraquat and oxytluorfen as an orchard herbicide-mixture. Data were prepared from the former report of authors. The algebraic expression for the actions of paraquat and oxyfluorfen on the control percentages of peach orchard weeds, and their interactions were determined from the multiple regression polynomial and plotted in three-dimensional graphs. As a result of treatments by combination of paraquat and oxyfluorfen on the field which was dominated by perennial weeds, the most effective interactions were detected at combination rates of $245\;gHa^{-1}$ paraquat and $470-705\;gHa^{-1}$ oxyfluorfen. However, to develope the long-term weeding-efficacies, the combination rates of paraquat are expected to raise up to $500-700\;gHa^{-1}$, and oxyfluorfen to fit at lower limits of rates, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the protox activity, the PPIX accumulation and the activity of antioxidative enzymes of the oxyfluorfen-tolerant and -susceptible rice cultivars by oxyfluorfen and oxytluorfen-similar herbicides treatment. When treated with acifluorfen, bifenox or oxadiazon, the oxyfluorfen-tolerant rice cultivars showed less decreased in fresh weight than the susceptible rice cultivars. The inhibition of protox activity was in the order of acifluorfen > oxyfluorfen > bifenox > oxadiazon, and the PPIX accumulation was in the sequence of oxadiazon > acifluorfen > oxyfluorfen > bifenox. The inhibition of protox activity and the PPIX accumulation by the herbicide was greater in the susceptible rice cultivars than in the tolerant rice cultivars. The effect inhibiting the decrease of chlorophyll content resulting from the treatment of GC, tetrapyrrole biosynthesis inhibitor, was in the order of oxyfluorfen > acifluorfen > bifenox > oxadiazon, and the tolerant rice cultivar had more than the susceptible rice cultivar. In the treatment of DPE and oxadiazon, the activities of MDAR, POX and GR was higher in the tolerant rice cultivar than in the susceptible rice cultivar, and in the case of POX isozyme the activities of main D and E bands increased in the tolerant rice cultivars at tested herbicides but they didn't in the susceptible rice cultivar.
In this study, the relationships between sensitivity to oxyfluorfen, absorption of the herbicide, protoporphyrin IX(Proto IX) accumulation and activities of antioxidative enzymes were examined to identify the tolerance mechanism against oxyfluorfen in various rice cultivars having different level of tolerance to this herbicide. Absorption of oxyfluorfen in tolerant rice cultivars was slower than in susceptible cultivars. Proto IX accumulation in various rice cultivars treated with oxyfluorfen was higher in susceptible cultivars than in tolerant ones. In susceptible cultivars especially, Proto IX accumlated rapidly during the herbicide treatment in the dark. Large amounts of Proto IX accumulation were considered to cause membrane lipid peroxidation in the light. However, among the tested rice cultivars, there was little relationship between their tolerance to oxyfluorfen and the activities of antioxidative enzymes. Therefore, it is assumed that differential susceptibility of rice cultivars to oxyfluorfen was due to difference in their capability to absorb the herbicide and to subsequently accumulate Proto IX.
The tolerant and susceptible rice cultivars to oxyfluorfen were selected from 400 rice cultivars in a laboratory, and tested in comparison with barnyardgrass, a typical oxyfluorfen susceptible weed. The responses to oxyfluorfen in the different levels of calli, cells and protoplasts of the rice cultivars were investigated. $I_{50}$ value of the tolerant rice cultivars was about $10^{-4}M$, whereas that of the susceptible rice cultivars and barnyardgrass was about $10^{-6}M$, showing significant difference between the two groups. The growth rate of calli segregated from the tolerant rice cultivars was higher than that from the susceptible rice cultivars and barnyardgrass by treatment of oxyfluorfen to the calli. The growth rate of suspension-cultured cells of the tolerant rice cultivars was higher than that of the susceptible rice cultivars and barnyardgrass after treatment of oxyfluorfen. The viability of protoplasts from the tolerant rice cultivars was higher than that from the susceptible rice cultivars and barnyardgrass after one or two hours of oxyfluorfen treatment. The intactness of protoplasts from the tolerant rice cultivars was also higher than that form the susceptible rice cultivars and barnyardgrass.
Responses of tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) leaves of different age to diphenyl ether herbicide oxyfluorfen were evaluated with respect to cellular leakage, chlorophyll loss, and membrane lipid peroxidation. When tobacco leaves of different age were incubated under light condition at $25^{\circ}C$ following 12hr dark incubation. Significant electrolyte leakage from the treated tissues into the bathing medium occurred. The change of electrolyte leakage was proportional to the oxytluorfen concentration and the duration of light exposure to the tissues. Electrolyte leakage from the tissues treated with oxyfluorfen was highly dependent on the leaf age. From the tissues of younger age, more electrolyte leakage occurred and lag period was greatly reduced. Chlorophyll loss and membrane lipid peroxidation, as measured by malondialdehyde production, caused by oxyfluorfen treatment were also dependent an the age of treated leaf tissues. In conclusion, physiological responses of tobacco leaves to oxyfluorfen greatly varied with the age of treated tissues, and thus tobacco plants could be used as appropriate materials for studying the mechanisms of tolerance to diphenyl ether herbicides.
