  • The possibility of chemical precipitation for recycled ammonium paratungstate (APT) was studied. WO3 particles were synthesized by chemical precipitation method using a 1:2 weight ratio of APT:DI-water. At the 500℃ sintering temperature, the X-ray diffraction results showed that APT completely decomposed to WO3. For the granulated powder WC-Co, vacuum heat treatment at proper temperatures increases tap density and flow-ability. Hardness of the WC-Co thermal spray coating layer was measured in the range HV 831~1266. Spray conditions for the best characteristic values were an oxygen flow rate=1500 scfh, a fuel flow rate = 5.25gph and a gun distance = 320mm.

  • Glucose oxidase from A. niger was entrapped in polyacrylamide gel which was used in the enzyme electrode for glucose analysis. The electrode was assembled by placing the gel between the membranes on the surface of a Clark type electrode. In order to make it possible to analyze the experimental results later, the stagnation flow was adopted wheree the governing fluid mechanics were well known. The current increased with the increase concentration in the bulk below a certain level of glucose concentration beyond which no more current increase was observed. This is probably due to the diffusion limitation of oxygen from the bulk solution. Also the current increased witll the enzyme loading in the gel, but the linearity between the current and the glucose concentration was rather limited to a narrow range. Flow rate was found to be very important, which means that film diffusion is very important under the flow rate of 5cm/sec. As a conclusion, enzyme loading, gel layer thickness, stirring speed and bulk concentration of glucose were found to be most improtant parameters in yielding a linar current reponse with respect to the bulk glucose concentration.

  • This paper deals with the modeling and simulation of the internal flowfield in a valveless airbreathing pulse detonation engine (PDE) currently under experimental development at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. The system involves no valves in the airflow path, and the isolation between the inlet and combustor is achieved through the gasdynamics in an isolator. The analysis accommodates the full conservation equations in axisymmetric coordinates, and takes into account variable properties for ethylene/oxygen/air system. Chemical reaction schemes with a single progress variable are implemented to minimize the computational burden. Detailed flow evolution during a full cycle is explored and propulsive performance is calculated. Effect of initiator mass injection rate is examined and results indicate that the mass injection rate should be carefully selected to avoid the formation of recirculation zones in the initial cold flowfield. Flow evolution results demonstrate a successful detonation transmission from the initiator to the combustor. However, strong pressure disturbance may propagate upstream to the inlet nozzle, suggesting the current configuration could be further refined to provide more efficient isolation between the inlet and combustor.

  • Thin films of $In_2O_3-SnO_2$(ITO), $SnO_2$, and $SiO_2$ were prepared on the PET substrate by DC magnetron roll sputtering. 135 nm thick ITO film on $SiO_2$/PET substrate has sheet resistance as low as 55 ${\Omega}/square$ and transmittance as high as 85%. $H_2O$gas permeation through the film was 0.35 g/$m^2$ in a day. These properties are enough on optical film for the plastic LCD substrate or touch panel. Both refractive index and sheet resistance of ITO was found to be very sensitive to $O_2$ flow rate. Oxygen flow conditions have been optimized from 4 to 5 SCCM at $10^{-3}$torr. It is also shown that both thickness of $SnO_2$ and refractive index of $SiO_2$ decrease as $O_2$ flow rate increases.

  • The effects of salinity on survival, oxygen consumption, and hematological response of greenling Hexagrammos otakii, mean body weight 147.1±3.8 g, were investigated under salinity conditions of 33.4 (control), 33.1, 32.8, 32.2, 31.0, 28.7, 23.9, 14.5, and 3.8 psu, to evaluate physiological effects in relation to changes in salinity. The survival and hematological responses of fish were measured at each salinity after 96- and 24-h exposures. The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of fish was measured in triplicate under conditions of stepwise salinity exposure (33.4→33.1→32.8→32.2→31.0→28.7→23.9→14.5→3.8 psu) with an interval of 24 h at each salinity, using a continuous flow-through respirometer. No fish mortality was observed in the range of 33.4 to 14.5 psu, but the survival rate was reduced to 53.3% at 3.8 psu after 96 h of exposure. The OCRs did not significantly differ in the range between 33.4 to 28.7 psu (P>0.05), but significantly increased at 23.9 and 14.5 psu, and then dramatically decreased at 3.8 psu compared to the control (P<0.05). Hematological variables, such as glucose, glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), hematocrit, and Na+, were affected by reduced salinity. This result may be applicable for habitat and culture management of greenlings.

  • Low-pressure plasmas (LPPs) were generated with different gases such as air, oxygen and nitrogen, and their inactivation effects against Escherichia coli were compared in order to evaluate the potential as a non-thermal microbial disinfection technology. Homogeneous plasmas were generated under low pressure below 1 Torr at gas flow rate of 350 mL/min regardless the types of gases. Temperature increases by LPPs were not detrimental showing less than ${10^{\circ}C}$ and ${25^{\circ}C}$ increases after 5 and 10 min treatments, respectively. The smallest temperature increase was observed with air LPP, and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. More than 5 log reduction in E. coli was achieved by 5 min LPP treatment but the destruction effect was retarded afterward. The LPP inactivation was represented by a iphasic first order reaction kinetics. The highest inactivation rate constant was achieved in air LPP and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. The small D-values of the LPP also supported its potentialities as a non-thermal food surface disinfection technology in addition to the substantial microbial reduction of more than 5 logs.

  • Performance and cavitation characteristics of a turbo pump inducer which is designed for oxygen pump is experimentally investigated. It is found that the static performance of inducer is dependent on the location of inlet pressure measurement and that enough distance from inducer is ensured for accurate evaluation of performance. With the increase of flow rate. NPSH tends to decrease as opposed to pump characteristics, which seems to be due to the cavitation region.

  • Experiments were performed to investigate hypoxia tolerance with body size of red seabream (Pagrus major) at 24℃. The rate of oxygen consumption was measured at an interval of 10 min using automated intermittent-flow respirometry. The weight-specific standard metabolic rate (SMR, mg O2 kg-1hr-1) and critical oxygen saturation (Scrit, % air saturation) of the fish were measured under normoxic condition and progressive hypoxia with 0.6-786 g of fish weight (W), respectively. SMR typically decreased with increasing body weight based on SMR=351.59·W-0.195 (r2=0.934). Scrit was higher in larger fish than those of smaller fish in the range of 17.3-24.4%. The result of this study suggests that the smaller seabream can withstand in hypoxic waters better than the larger ones.
