  • The hot cracking phenomena and phase behaviors during hot working process of Cu-Ni bearing hot rolled steels were investigated by a $90^{\circ}$bending tests, BSE image analysis and EDS analysis. For aNi-free 1.2% Cu bearing steel, the surface hot cracking occurred about $1100^{\circ}C$ due to a liquid state Cu-enriched phase formed continuously at the interface between oxide scale and matrix. The liquid Cu-enriched phase penetrated into austenite grain boundaries and caused surface cracking during the hot working. In case of 0.6% Ni containing 1.2% Cu-Ni bearing steel, solid state Cu-Ni-riched phase existed at the scale/matrix interface as a discontinuous type. But the higher addition of 1.2% Ni, solid state Ni-Cu-riched phase was formed dominantly in the oxide scale. It was found that the addition of Ni suppressed the surface cracking of 1.2% Cu bearing steel by eliminating the liquid state Cu-enriched phase.

  • An electrochemical reduction technology which can reduce the decay heat, volume, and radioactivity of spent fuel by a factor of quarter by converting oxide type spent fuel to a metallic form in a molten salt was developed and mock-up test in a 5kg $U_3O_8$/batch scale was carried out. The electrochemical reaction was analyzed regarding the operational factors. The research efforts was also concentrated on the apparatus development for a hot test. Fresh $U_3O_8$ powder was metallized with a more than 99% yield via this electrochemical technology and design data for the 20kg $U_3O_8$/batch scale apparatus were also obtained.

  • It has long been known that the oxidation kinetics of Zr-based alloys undergoes a crossover from parabolic to cubic in the pretransition period (before breakaway of the oxide scale). This kinetic crossover, however, is not fully understood yet. We have earlier proposed a model for the Zr-oxidation kinetics, in a closed form for the first time, by taking into account a compressive strain energy gradient as a diffusional driving force in addition to a chemical potential gradient of component oxygen across the ZrO$_2$ scale upon Zr [J. Nucl. Mater., 299 (2001) 235]. In this paper, we experimentally reconfirm the validity of the proposed model by using the thermogravimetric data on mass gain of Zr in a plate and wire form, respectively, in air atmosphere at different temperatures in the range of 500$^{\circ}$ to 800$^{\circ}C$, and subsequently report on the numerical values for oxygen chemical diffusivity and strain energy gradient across the oxide scale.

  • The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions becomes a global issue, the main source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Asian region is the energy conversion sector, especially coal-fired power plants. We are working to develop technologies that will at least limit the increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the thermal power plants as one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Our research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by removing iron oxide scale from the feedwater system of thermal power plants using a superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, thereby reducing the loss of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the background of thermal power plants in Asia is outlined, followed by a case study of the introduction of a chemical cleaning line at an actual thermal power plant in Japan, and the possibility of introducing it into the thermal power plants in China based on the results.

  • The low-temperature processing is very important for fabrication of the very large scale ($60{\sim}70nm$) semiconductor devices since the submicron transistors are sensitive to the thermal budget. Hence, in this work, we propose a noble low-temperature LPCVD (Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) process for the $SiO_2$ film and evaluate the electrical reliability of the LTO (Low-Temperature Oxide) by making the capacitors with ONO (Oxide/Nitride/Oxide) structure. The leak current of the LTO was similar to that of the high-temperature wet oxide until the electric field was lower than 5 MV/cm. However, when the electric field was higher, the LTO showed much better characteristics.

  • The formation of niobium oxide microcones on niobium substrates was investigated in NaF to the HF electrolytes. This condition builds on the uniqueness of the microstructures niobium oxide. The dimensions and integrity of the bulk microstructures were found to be strongly dependent on potential, temperature, electrolyte composition, and anodization time. The anodic oxide was initially amorphous at all temperatures, but crystalline oxide nucleated during anodization. From XRD patterns of the anodized specimens, the microcones consisted of crystalline $Nb_2O_5$. We demonstrated niobium oxide microcone structures with nanorods. The anodized niobium oxide microcone texture revealed nanorod bundles. The surface of $Nb_2O_5$ microcones is very regular and has a nano-scale. The surface morphologies of the nanorods were examined using FE-SEM. EDS analyses show that the anodically prepared niobium oxide consists of $Nb_2O_5$. The aim of this study is to find the condition of forming the favorable nanorods by anodization method.

  • Recently, the increasing degree of device integration in the fabrication of Si semiconductor devices, etching processes of nano-scale materials and high aspect-ratio (HAR) structures become more important. Due to this reason, etch selectivity control during etching of HAR contact holes and trenches is very important. In this study, The etch selectivity and etch rate of TEOS oxide layer using ACL (amorphous carbon layer) mask are investigated various process parameters in CH2F2/C4F8/O2/Ar plasma during etching TEOS oxide layer using ArF/BARC/SiOx/ACL multilevel resist (MLR) structures. The deformation and etch characteristics of TEOS oxide layer using ACL hard mask was investigated in a dual-frequency superimposed capacitively coupled plasma (DFS-CCP) etcher by different fHF/ fLF combinations by varying the CH2F2/ C4F8 gas flow ratio plasmas. The etch characteristics were measured by on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) And X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). A process window for very high selective etching of TEOS oxide using ACL mask could be determined by controlling the process parameters and in turn degree of polymerization. Mechanisms for high etch selectivity will discussed in detail.

  • Reduction of oxides has been investigated for the volume reduction and recycling of the spent oxide fuel from commercial nuclear power plants. Various oxide reduction methods were proposed and KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) is currently developing an electrochemical reduction process using a LiCl-$Li_2O$ molten salt as a reaction medium. The electrochemical reduction process, the front end of the pyroprocessing, can connect the PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) oxide fuel cycle to a metal fuel cycle of the sodium cooled fast reactor. This paper summarizes KAERI efforts on the development, improvement, and scale-up of the oxide reduction process.
