During the hot rolling process, steels develop an oxide scale on their surface. This scale can affect the mechanical properties of the rolled steel and its surface aspect. The main problem comes from the mechanical integrity of the oxide scales which could delaminate or crack, leading eventually to later oxide incrustation within the steel. The objective of the present work is to qualify the mechanical integrity of the iron oxide scales during the hot rolling process. The laboratory experiments use a four point bending test to simulate the mechanical solicitation which takes place during the rolling sequence of the steel slabs. The oxide scales grow on a mild steel at $900^{\circ}C$ under wet or dry atmosphere and the oxidized steel is then mecahnically tested at $900^{\circ}C$ or $700^{\circ}C$. The high temperature four point bending tests are completed with microstructural observations and with the record of acoustic emission to follow in-situ the mechanical damages of the oxide scales. The results show the role of water vapor which promotes the scale adherence, and the role of the temperature as the oxide are more damaged at $700^{\circ}C$ than at $900^{\circ}C$.

In this study, high temperature oxidation behavior of Alloy 617 was investigated to evaluate the effect of grain size for Alloy 617. The grain size of grain-refined Alloy 617 (GR617) was reduced to $5{\mu}m$ from $71{\mu}m$ for as-received Alloy 617 (AR617) by recrystallization after cold rolling. After high temperature aging, the oxide layers of AR617 and GR617 consisted of $Cr_2O_3$ external oxide scale and $Al_2O_3$ internal oxide. The external oxide scale resulted in a Cr-depleted zone and a carbide free zone below the scale. The depth of the carbide free zone was deeply formed in GR617. On the other hand, the depth of the internal oxide layer in GR617 was shorter than that in AR617. After a 3-point bending test, crack propagation of GR617 was more restricted than that of AR617 because of the different microstructure of the internal oxide.

The corrosion behavior of heat-resistant alloys, More 1 and Super 22H in molten salts of LiCl and $LiCl-Li_2$O was investigated in the temperature range of $650~850^{\circ}C$. In a molten salt of LiCl, a dense protective oxide scale of $LiCrO_2$ was formed, following growth of oxide scale with parabolic kinetics. But in a mixed molten salt of LiCl, a dense protective oxide scale of $LiCrO_2$ was formed, following growth of oxide scale with parabolic kinetics. But in a mixed molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2$O, a porous non-protective scale of Li\ulcorner(Cr, Ni, Fe)\ulcornerO$_2$was formed, following growth of oxide scale with linear kinetics. The corrosion rate increased slowly with the increase of temperature up to $750^{\circ}C$, but above $750^{\circ}C$ rapid increase in corrosion rate observed. The corrosion behavior of Super 22H alloy was similar to that of More 1 alloy, but Super 22H showed higher corrosion resistance than More 1.

Biocompatible capsules have recently been highlighted as novel delivery platforms of any "materials" (e.g., drug, food, agriculture pesticide) to address current problems of living systems such as humans, animals, and plats in academia and industry for agriculture, biological, biomedical, environmental, food applications. For example, biocompatible alginate capsules were proposed as a delivery platform of biocontrol agents (e.g., bacterial antagonists) for an alternative to antibiotics, which will be a potential strategy in future agriculture. Here, we proposed a new platform based on biocompatible alginate capsules that can control the movements as an active target delivery strategy for various applications including agriculture and biological engineering. We designed and fabricated large scale biocompatible capsules using alginates and custom-made nozzles as well as gelling solutions. To develop the active target delivery platforms, we incorporated the iron oxide nanoparticles in the large scale alginate capsules. It was found that the sizes of large scale alginate capsules could be controlled via various working conditions such as concentrations of alginate solutions and iron oxide nanoparticles. As a proof of concept work, we showed that the iron oxide particles-incorporated large scale alginate capsules could be moved actively by the magnetic fields, which would be a strategy as active target delivery platforms for agriculture and biological engineering (e.g., controlled delivery of agriculture pesticides and biocontrol agents).

This paper deals with the analysis of characteristics of the scale non-uniformly formed on the surface of the steel during the steel production processes. The steel made at the high temperature contacts with the oxygen in the air, so forms the scale immediately. The scale has a role to protect the surface of the steel product as a oxide-layer, but the scale formed non-uniformly spoils the exterior of the steel product and occurs the problems about the next processes. There is a pickling process to remove the scale of the steel products, but the real situation is that the pickling process is not also based on the analysis of the characteristics of the scale. Therefore, this paper describe the procedures of the analysis of the scale more effectively using the radio-frequency wave. Using the radio-frequency wave, this paper introduce the experimentations to analyze the distributions of scale, the junction characteristics between the surface of steel and scale and the distributions of scale on the produced steel coil. Also, according to the simple simulations, this paper proves the proprieties about the above contents.
Low carbon steels were oxidized isothermally at 1050 and $1180^{\circ}C$ for 4 hr in air in order to determine the effect of alloying elements Si, S, Cu, Sn, and Ni on oxidation. For oxidation resistance of low carbon steels, the beneficial elements were Si, Cu, and Ni, whereas the harmful elements were S and Sn. The most active alloying element, Si, was scattered inside the oxide scale, at the scale-alloy interface, and as an internal oxide precipitate. The relatively noble elements such as Cu and Ni tended to weakly segregate at the scale-alloy interface. Sulfur and Sn were weakly, uniformly distributed inside the oxide scale. Excessively thick, non-adherent scales containing interconnected pores formed at $1180^{\circ}C$.
In a salb-preheating furnace of steel-making industry, the oxidation/degradation behavior of Cr3C2 ceramic composited dkid button reaction with scale in Fe-oxide system occurs and was thermodynamically examined. The reaction of scale with Cr3C2 skid button produces Cr3C2(s) and C(s), and Co gas is then evolved from the reaction of C(s) with Fe-scale. Cr3C2(s) from oxidation of Cr3C2(s) reacted with Fe-oxide(s) becomes high-melting chromite. The chromite acts as protection layer against further oxidation and improves resistance of the reaction of Cr3C2 skid button with Fe-scale.

Alloys of Ti-43%Al-2%W-0.1%Si were oxidized isothermally and cyclically between $900^{\circ}C$ and$ 1050^{\circ}C$, and their oxidation characteristics were studied. During isothermal tests, the alloys oxidized slowly up to 100$0^{\circ}C$, but fast at $1050^{\circ}C$. Though the scale adherence was not good above $900^{\circ}C$, the alloys displayed better oxidation behavior than unalloyed TiAl alloys. The oxide scales consisted primarily of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, intermediate $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layer, and an inner mixed layer of (TiO$_2$$+Al_2$$O_3$). Tungsten was present mainly at the lower part of the oxide scale, while Si over the whole oxide scale.

Scale defects generated on the strip surface in a tandem finishing mill line are collected from the strip trapped among the production mills by freezing the growing scale on the strip by the melt glass coating and shutting down the line simultaneously. The samples observed of its cross sectional figure showed the process of scale defect formation where the defects are formed at the base metal surface by thicker oxidized scale during each rolling passes. The properties of the oxidized layer growth both at rolling and inter-rolling are detected down sized rolling test simulating carefully the rolling condition of the production line. The thickness of the oxidized layer at each rolling pass are simulated numerically. The critical scale thickness to avoid the defect formation is determined through the expression of mutual relation between oxidized layer thickness and the lanks of the strip called quality for the scale defects. The scale growth of scale less than the critical thickness and also to keep the bulk temperature tuning the water flow rate and cooling time appropriately. Two units of Inerstand Cooler are designed and settled among the first three stands in the production line. Two units of scale defect is counted from the recoiled strip and the results showed distinct decrease of the defects comparing to the conventionaly rolled products.
In this study, we developed a semi-analytical approach for the numerical analysis of residual stress in oxide scales formed on hot-rolled steels. The oxide scale, formed during the hot rolling process, experiences complex interactions due to thermal and mechanical influences, significantly affecting the material's integrity and performance. Our research focuses on integrating various stress components such as thermal stress, growth stress, and creep behavior to predict the residual stress within the oxide layer. The semi-analytical method combines analytical expressions for each stress component with numerical integration to account for their cumulative effects. Validation through instrumented indentation tests confirms the reliability of our model, which considers thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) differences, scale growth, and creep-induced stress relaxation. Our findings indicate that thermal stress resulting from CTE differences significantly impacts the overall residual stress, with growth stress contributing a compressive component during cooling, and creep behavior playing a minor role in stress relaxation. This comprehensive approach enhances the accuracy of residual stress prediction, facilitating the optimization of material design and processing conditions for hot-rolled steel products.
