Organic contaminants can be released into water environments due to chemical accidents and exist as dissolved and non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). Fenton oxidation was tested for bisphenol A and nitrobenzene as model organic contaminants in dissolved and NAPL states. Fenton oxidation was successfully applied for both of the dissolved and NAPL states of the two pollutants and the results indicated that a quick treatment was needed to reduce the risk from a chemical accidents instead of carrying out oxidation after the contaminants dissolve in water. A set of Fenton reactions were tested under seawater conditions because chemical accidents often occurs in the ocean. Chloride ions act as radical scavengers and inhibit Fenton oxidation. The reaction rate is inversely proportional to salt contents and the reduced reaction rate can be compensated by increasing the quantity of the oxidizing agents. The current study showes that Fenton oxidation could be applied as a quick treatments for organic contaminant in dissolved and NAPL state organic contaminants released as a result of leaks or chemical accidents.

SOFC (Solid oxide fuel cell) has an advantage in the term of fuel flexibility, comparing with other kinds of fuel cells. In SOFC and fuel reformer cooperation system, the reformate gas with the various $H_2$/CO ratios is delivered into the anode of SOFC. In this situation, electrochemical oxidation reactions of the reformate gas in the anode are complex and competitive. In this paper, the effects of the composition of $H_2$ and CO on the overall electrochemical oxidation at Ni-YSZ anode are studied by testing the open circuit voltage (OCV) and current-voltage characteristics of single cells.
Structure and their redox property of the vanadium oxides prepared by decomposing NH₄VO₃ at various temperatures were studied by XRD, SEM, XPS, and temperature programmed reduction/temperature programmed oxidation (TPR/TPO) experiment. All TPR profiles have two sharp peaks in the temperature range 650-750℃, and the area ratio of the two sharp peaks changed from sample to sample. There were three redox steps in TPR/TPO profiles. The oxidation proceeded in the reverse order of the reduction process, and both the reactions proceeded via quite a stable intermediates. The changes of the morphological factor $(I_{(101)}/I_{(010)})$, the ratio of $O_{1S}$ peak area (O$_{1S}$( α)/O$_{1S}$( β)) in the XPS results, and the ratio of hydrogen consumption in TPR profiles with various vanadium oxides showed the distinct relationship between the structural property and their redox property of vanadium oxides. The change of the specific yield of phthalic anhydride with various vanadium oxides showed a very similar trend to those of the peak area ratio in TPR profiles, which meant that the first reduction step related to the partial oxidation of o-xylene on the vanadium oxide catalyst.

The effect of packaging on the quality of dried anchovy was investigated, when packed with various materials and stored at different conditions. In cases of nitrogen gas substitution or addition of antioxidant, the reaction rates of lipid oxidation, the loss of available lysine and browning of the samples sealed in aluminum laminated film bag were lower than those packed in kraft paper or polyethylene film bag while the samples without gas substitution did not reveal any great differences in the rate of the reactions. The shelf-lives of the samples computed as a function of lipid oxidation were 90, 98 and 137 days at the storage of $35^{\circ}C$ for the packages of kraft paper, polyethylene and aluminum film respectively. And those at $55^{\circ}C$ storage for the same samples were 47, 51 and 77 days. The half-lives of available lysine loss were 227, 209 and 312 days at $35^{\circ}C$: 83, 83 and 147 days at $55^{\circ}C$ for the samples respectively. And the shelf-lives determined as a function of browning reaction were 26, 27 and 49 days at $55^{\circ}C$. The predicted shelf-lives at $25^{\circ}C$ as a function of lipid oxidation were 130, 140, and 189 days for kraft paper, polyethylene and aluminum laminated film packaging: 207, 229 and 246 days for the browning reaction, and 363, 339 and 415 days for the loss of available lysine. The results suggest that the protective effect of packaging on the reactions of lipid oxidation and browning could not be aided unless the air was expelled or replaced to inert gas.

The SBR(Sequencing Batch Reactor) process is ideally suited to treat high loading wastewater due to its high dilution rate. SBR operates by a cycle of periods consisting of filling, reacting, settling, decanting and idling. The react phases such as aeration or non-aeration, organic oxidation, nitrification, denitrification and other bio-logical reactions can be achieved in a reactor. Although the whole reactions can be achieved in a SBR with time distributing, it is hard to manage the SBR as a normal condition without recognizing a present state. The present state can be observed with nutrient sensors such as ${NH_{4}}^{+}-N$, ${NO_{2}}^{-}-N$, ${NO_{3}}^{-}-N} and ${PO_{4}}^{ 3-}-P.$ However, there is still a disadvantage to use the nutrient sensors because of their high expense and inconvenience to manage. Therefore, it is very useful to use common on-line sensors such as DO, ORP and pH, which are less expensive and more convient. Moreover, the present states and unexpected changes of SBR might be predicted by using of them. This study was conducted to get basic materials for making an inference of SBR process from ORP(oxidation reduction potential) of synthetic wastewater. The profiles of ORP, DO, and pH were under normal nitrification and denitrification were obtained to compare abnormal condition. And also, nitrite and nitrate accumulation were investigated during reaction of SBR. The bending point on ORP profile was not entirely in the low COD/NOx ratio condition. In this case, NOx was not entirely removed, and minimum ORP value was presented over -300mV. Under suitable COD/NOx ratio which complete denitrification was achieved, ORP bending point was observed and minimum ORP value was under -300m V. Under high COD/NOx ratio, ORP bending point was not detected at the first subcycle because of the fast denitrification and minimum ORP value was under -300mV at the time.
Many herbs have been used as therapeutics in Korean traditional medicine. In view of their clinical indications, anti-oxidant activity may contribute to their pharmacological effects. However, anti-oxidant information on these plants has not been available. In this study, seventy herbs which have been used in Korean traditional medicine were selected and screened for anti-oxidant activity using their water extracts. The anti-oxidant activity was assessed by their ability to inhibit three oxidation reactions; luminol/Fenton reagent, 2, 7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein(DCHF)/Fenton reagent and DCHF/peroxynitrite. In each assay, 70 herbs were divided into two groups; anti-oxidant group which inhibited the respective oxidation reaction and was majority(about 60 herbs), and pro-oxidant group which enhanced the oxidation reaction but was minority(more or less 10 herbs). When the herbs were listed in the order of their anti-oxidant strength, the orders obtained from each assay were found to be quite similar. The upper top rankers(more or less 10 herbs) in each assay showed strong activity compared to the others. The uppermost rankers in each assay were Rubus coreanus Miquel/Rubus schizostylus(覆盆子), Schisandra chinensis Baillon/Schizandra chinensis(五味子) and Terminalia chebula Retziusl Terminalia chebula(訶子). Of the pro-oxidant herbs, about 4-5 herbs were strongly pro-oxidant, which enhanced the control oxidation reactions to 150-300%. But the meaning of this observation is not known since few of them in one assay were also anti-oxidant in other assays. The results obtained in the present study may serve as information for understanding pharmacological effects of these herbs and developing new drugs from them.
Diabetes carries an increased risk of atherosclerotic disease that is not fully explained by known car-diovascular risk factors. There is accumulating evidence that advanced glycation of structural proteins, and oxidation and glycation of circulating lipoproteins, are implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic ather-osclerosis. Reactions involving glycation and oxidation of proteins and lipids are believed to contribute to atherogenesis. Glycation, the nonenzymatic binding of glucose to protein molecules, can increase the ather-ogenic potential of certain plasma constituents, including low density lipoptotein(LDL). Glycation of LDL is significant increased in diabetic patients compared with normal subjects, even in the presence of good glycemic control. Metabolic abnormalities associated with glycation of LDL include diminished recognition of LDL by the classic LDL receptor; increased covalent binding of LDL in vessel walls ; enhanced uptake of LDL by the macrophages, thus stimulating foam cell formation ; increased platelet aggregation; formation of LDL-immune complexes ; and generation of oxygen free radicals, resulting on oxidative damage to both the lipid and protein components of LDL and to any nearby macromolecules. Oxidized lipoproteins are characterzied by cytotoxicity, potent stimulation of foam cell formation by macrophages, and procoagulant effects. Combined glycation and oxidation, "glycoxidation" occurs when oxidative reactions affect the initial products of glycation, and results in irreversible structural alterations of proteins. Glycoxidation is of greatest significance in long lived proteins such as collagen. In these proteins, glycoxidation products, believed to be atherogenic, accumulate with advancing age : in diabetes, their rate of accumulate is accelerated. Inhibition of glycation, oxidation and glycoxidation may form the basis of future antiaterogenic strategies in both diabetic and nondiabetic individuals.dividuals.

The gaseous carbon dioxide has been irradiated with Co-60 gamma-radiation in the presence and absence of various alcohols, and the radiolysis products analyzed by gas chromatography. Experimental results indicate that no detectable amount of carbon monoxide is formed when pure carbon dioxide is irradiated. By adding small quantities of alcohols to carbon dioxide, however, considerable amount of carbon monoxide, ketones, alcohols and other organic products have been detected. By adding 0.1% of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-methyl-l-propanol, 2-butanol, and 2-methyl-2-propanol, G(CO) values obtained are 4.4, 4.5, 5.2, 4.4, 5.2, 5.0, 4.7 and 4.1, respectively. These high yields of carbon monoxide suggest that the oxidation reactions of carbon monoxide may be suppressed by scavenging oxygen atom with the alcohols. The main radiolytic decomposition reactions of the alcohols present in small quantity in carbon dioxide may be supposed to be the reactions with the oxygen atom produced by the radiolysis of carbon dioxide. The decomposition reactions seems to follow pseudo-first order kinetics with respect to the alcohols. The decomposition rate measured with 2-propanol is the fastest and that with 2-methyl-2-propanol the slowest. The mechanisms of the radiolytic decomposition reactions of the alcohols present in carbon dioxide are discussed on the basis of the experimental results of the present study.

To simulate the combustion process under stratified charged conditions, like GDI engines, the new combustion model is proposed, which is based on Welter's FAE model and Peters' PDF model for considering primary reactions. In addition to these models, the new laminar burning velocity correlation and diffusion flame model are also included in the proposed model. The former can be applicable to much wider range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature than the others, such as Keck's and Guilder's models, and the latter has been derived from water-gas shift reaction and hydrogen oxidation, by which the secondary reactions can be considered after primary reactions. 3-D computation has been performed by using STAR-CD v3.05 in the simple cylindrical geometry under stratified charged condition. Judging from the calculated results, the present model proves to be reasonable to simulate the characteristics of flame propagation and concentrations of products in burned regions.
Viologen derivative has been widely investigated because of their well-electrochemical behavior including the electron acceptor for the electric charge delivery mediation of the devices. The viologen exist in three main oxidation states, namely, $V^{2+}{\rightleftarrows}V^{{\cdot}+}{\rightleftarrows}V^0$. These redox reactions are highly reversible and can be cycled many times without significant side reaction. In this paper, we determined the time dependence to resonant frequency shift of QCM during self-assembly process and the electrochemical behavior of the self-assembled viologen monolayers by electrochemical QCM method. The redox reactions of viologen were highly reversible and the EQCM has been employed to monitor the electrochemically induced adsorption of SAMs during the redox reactions.
