  • Electronic circuits are becoming more vulnerable owing to the development of integrated circuit. Computer and info-communication facilities are very sensitive to surges caused by lightning, and they can suffer a malfunction and damage. Recent concern about damage and upset caused by transient overvoltages has focused on surge protection. The most important parameter in surge protection is the transient grounding impedance. In this paper, the transient grounding impedances of a rod electrode have been measured under impulse current waves. Z-t, Z-i and V-i characteristics of the grounding electrode in according to the length of the grounding lead wire were obtained and analyzed.

A Study on Lightning Surges in Underground Distribution Systems

  • The effects of surge arresters for the protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been reviewed by many researchers. However, their studies have not encompassed underground cable systems. Therefore, in this paper we investigate the 22.9kV combined distribution systems that have arresters and ground wires. In addition, we analyze the overvoltages on underground distribution cable sections when direct lightning strokes contact the overhead ground wire using EMTP. Finally, we discuss the effect of lightning strokes according to the change of cable length and installation of arresters. This study provides insulation coordination methods for reasonable system design in 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems.

  • This paper describes a proposed very fast transient overvoltages(VFTO) measurement system suited for established gas insulated switchgear(GIS). The detecting system consists of a shield electrode connected to a buffer amplifier, and the transmission of the detected signal to an oscilloscope is made through an optical fiber. The bandwidth of the measurement system is 5 Hz to 30MHz. When determining the voltage dividing ratio by use of the commercial frequency voltage, the error is less than 0.5 %. Also, the data were obtained by the electric field probe and the high voltage probe, and their deviation for voltage dividing ratio were less than 1 %.

  • The surge arrester plays a vital role in the protection of substation against transient overvoltages resulting from lightning surges and system switching operations. The proper selection and application of the surge arrester is an integral part of the process of substation equipment insulation level selection. The paper outlines the basic consideration in modeling the lightning stroke, the surge arrester, and the system to be protected. The paper discusses the results of various cases simulated using the alternative transient computer program to evaluate the separation effects.

  • ZnO varistors have been widely used to protect power system and electronic system against overvoltages based on their excellent nonlinearity. In order to increase their protection capability, ZnO varistors are chosen by several electrical parameters according to their applications, namely 1mA DC voltage, 1eakage currents, impulse residual voltages, withstanding capability to impulse surge, and energy absorption capability. But these Parameters have scattering properties due to the nonuniformity of electrical characteristics. In this study, the effect of the microstructrual nonuniformity on the surge absorption capability of ZnO varistors.

  • This paper discusses the effects of ECC (Earth Continuity Conductor) for reducing the level of induced sheath overvoltages at the single point bonded section of combined transmission lines which are mixed underground power cable with overhead line in one T/L. In previous papers, the characteristics of ECC on only underground power cable systems were sufficiently analyzed. However, the result of only underground power cable systems are totally different from that of combined transmission lines because ECC is commonly grounded with overhead grounding wire at mesh of cable head. Therefore, in this paper, the installation effects of ECC have been variously analyzed considering the three kinds of fault positions, cable formation of duct and trefoil, spacing between phase conductor and ECC, and the change of overhead transmission line section length on 154kV combined transmission line. Finally, simulation results show that ECC can effectively reduce the induced sheath voltage.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the inductive voltages, currents, frequencies of output line of electrodeless fluorescent lamp system as an surge is supplied and have analyzed the surge characteristics as an phase alteration of input voltage with an surge suppling. A result os measurement is that the inductive over-voltages(H-PE, N-PE) on output line of electrodeles fluorescent lamp system showed more high than inductive overvoltages of H(hot)-N(neutral) line. Therefore, designer of system will lay emphasis on an protective circuit with considening an overvoltage(H-PE, N-PE) or phase of input voltage.

  • There are several overvoltages by abnormal conditions in power system. We need to calculate these ovevoltages for the insulation design and the fault analysis. For these calculations, we used EMTP(Electro-magnetic Transients Program). During EMTP calculations, the accurate modelling of the equipments is very important for analysis results. In this paper, we considered the effects of the modelling condition's changes for transmission line within EMTP modelling cases of overvoltage analysis. Specially, we considered CB closing cases of 765[kV] system. So, we had changed the calculation frequencies of Line Constants, which is used for CB closing cases. In addition, we compared the calculation result and the measured result.

  • The effects of surge arresters for protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been reviewed using Electromagnetic Transients Program(EMTP). Distribution lines are spanned in much larger area than transmission lines, and therefore, are more susceptible to lightning strokes. We have modelled the 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems that have arresters and grounding wires. And this paper analyzes the overvoltages on underground distribution cable systems when direct lightning strokes strike on the overhead grounding wire using EMTP. Then we investigated that (1) the effects of lightning stroke according to underground distribution cable length (2) voltages at the riser pole and at the cable terminal according to installation of arrester. This study will provide insulation coordination methods for reasonable systems design in 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems.

  • Surge protective devices (SPD) have a special position because of the expectation that they perform an effective protective function against various kinds of surges. However, there exists a misconception that the SPD satisfying lower measured limiting voltage (MLV) should also protect equipment against temporary overvoltages (TOVs) as well. This paper inspects various types of MOV based SPDs and carry out experiments on the side effects of the low MLV characteristics. The experiment results show that a low MLV could cause a higher TOV-induced SPD failure rate in the field.
