Investigation and Mitigation of Overvoltage Due to Ferroresonance in the Distribution Network

  • This paper reports an investigation of overvoltages caused by ferroresonance in the distribution system, which consists of a bank of open-delta single-phase voltage transformers. The high voltage sides of the voltage transformer are connected to the distribution system via three single-phase fuse cutouts. Due to the saturation characteristic of the transformer cores, ferroresonance can occur in the condition that the transformer is energized or deenergized with single-phase switching operation of the fuse cutouts. The simulation tool based on EMTP is used to investigate the overvoltages at the high side of voltage transformer. Bifurcation diagrams are used to present the ferroresonance behavior in ranges of different operating conditions. The simulation results are in good agreement with the results from the experiment of 22 kV voltage transformers. The mitigation technique with additional damping resistors in the secondary windings of the voltage transformers will be introduced. Brief discussion will be made on the physical phenomena related to the overvoltage and the damage of voltage transformer.

  • This paper describes a cause of fire accidents on power system fire DC electric traction vehicles. We investigated fire scene of power line for DC electric traction vehicles. From analysis results, the cause of fire on power line turned out line to ground fault between a feeder of electric power services(pantagraph) and DC electric traction vehicle roof. Fire accident of DC electric traction vehicles be assumed that electric sparks had been produced between the pantagraph and the power line conductor by repetitively making contact and separation, maybe if some material like branches get in between connecting rod it makes progress line to ground fault. ZnO arresters are widely used to protect DC electric traction vehicles against overvoltages caused by lightning or switching surges. However, the arresters are deteriorated by commercial overvoltages and/or lightning one. The deteriorated arresters could lead power failures, such as line to ground fault by a thermal runaway resulting from the increases in leakage current even in a nominal power system voltage. Finally, the power failures would be causative of the fire accident.

  • 정밀하고 소형화된 전자기기 사용의 증가로 인한 전원공급의 질적 향상에 대한 필요성이 강하게 증가하고 있다. 저압전원 배전계통에서의 과도 과전압은 직격 또는 유도뢰에 의해 유도되어지고, 가정, 사무실, 공장 등의 자동화시스템이나 병원설비와 같은 중요한 시스템의 손상이나 고장의 원인이 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 임펄스 발생기를 이용하여 배전용 변압기를 거쳐 저압 전원시스템으로 이행되는 뇌과전압의 양상에 대하여 실험적으로 조사하였다. 배전용 변압기의 1차측에 설치한 피뢰기와 수용가측 추가접지는 저압 전원시스템으로 이행되는 뇌서지전압의 제한에는 크게 기여하지 않았다.

  • This paper deals with the transient analyses of both the one-phase ICB circuit and the three-phase ICB circuit. During the transient switching intervals, overvoltages or voltage unbalances may be produced on the capacitors. The three-step and four-step transient switching sequences were discussed and compared on the basis of phase shifting. Also, simple control method using bang-bang control was proposed and the digital simulations were carried out. As the results, it is verified that the proposed control technique is efficient.

  • This paper presents a circuit design far clamping the overvoltages across the GTOs in three-level GTO inverters. The proposed circuit has two roles as follows; one is to minimize the power dissipation in each GTO. It can be achieved by clamping the overvoltage to half that of the DC-link voltage as exactly as possible. The other is to get blocking voltage balancing between the inner GTOs and the outer GTOs.

  • Insulator strings can be frequently damaged by fault currents occured by lightning strokes, overvoltages and contamination of the insulators. So the Insulator damages may lead to extensive damages to transmission lines as well as power outages that have caused dangerous situations to occur. This paper suggests the characteristics of arcing horn in relation to the protection of insulators and basic design concepts of the arcing horn for transmission lines.

  • 고도 정보화 사회의 발달과 함께 정보통신 설비는 빠른 전송속도를 필요로 하며, 지능형 산업설비와 행정, 금융, 교통시스템과 같은 사회시스템은 집적회로와 초소형 반도체로 구성되므로 원격감시, 조작에 의해 점차적으로 자동화 되어가고 있다. 이와 같은 현대의 초소형 전자회로는 뇌 서지에 의해 흔히 손상을 입을 수 있으며, 뇌 과전압으로부터 전자회로의 보호에 관심이 집중되고 있다. 본 논문은 일반주택에서 뇌 서지로부터 초소형 컴퓨터와 같은 전자기기의 효과적인 보호방법을 제안하기 위하여 전원계통의 접지방식에 따른 서지보호기의 보호효과를 실험적으로 분석하였다. 또한 서지보호기의 효과적인 설치방법을 조사하고 제안하였다. 기존의 설비에 추가적으로 서지보호기를 설치하는 것은 서지보호기까지의 긴 접속선으로 인한 인덕턴스 때문에 높은 잔류전압이 나타난다. 서지보호기의 설치에 있어 두 접속선을 꼬는 방법이 급격하게 상승하는 과도과전압에 매우 효과적이다.

커플링/디커플링 네트워크 내장 서지발생장치의 설계 및 제작 (Design and Fabrication of a Surge Generator with Coupling/Decoupling Networks)

  • Metal oxide varistors (MOVs) protect circuits and devices from transient overvoltages in electric power systems. However, a MOV continuously deteriorates owing to manufacturing defects or repetitive protective operations from transient overvoltages. A deteriorated MOV may result in a short circuit or a line-ground accident. Previous studies focused on the analysis of deterioration mechanisms and condition diagnosis techniques for MOVs owing to their recent growth of use. An accelerated deterioration experiment under the same conditions in which a MOV operates is essential. In this study, we designed and fabricated a surge generator that can apply a surge current to a MOV connected to AC mains. The coupling network operates at a low impedance against the surge current from the surge generator and transfers the surge current to the MOV under test. It also acts as a high impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage not to be applied to the surge generator. The decoupling network operates at a high impedance against the surge current and blocks the surge current from AC mains. It also acts as a low impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage to be applied to the MOV under test. The prototype surge generator can apply the 8/20 us up to 15 kA on AC voltages in the approximate range of 110~450 V, and it fully operates on a LabVIEW-based program.
