This study was conducted to prepare high quality grape seed oils by solvent extraction and chemical refining process. Additionally, quantitative analysis of several functional components in grope seed was carried out to compare quality characteristics of grape seeds from grapes grown by conventional and organic agricultural practices. There are no significant differences in several functional constituents of grape seeds between conventionally cultivated- and organically cultivated-grapes, although some functional compositions of grape seeds are different between two cultivation methods. The dried grape seed was pretreated with roasting heating for 5 min, milled and then extracted twice with n-hexane under reflux at $50^{\circ}C$ for overnight, followed by filtration and evaporation. The crude grape seed oil was successively purified by degumming with $0.1\%\;H_3PO_4$, deaciding with $20\%\;NaOH$, and then decoloring and deodorization by a steam distillation, and thereby producing purified grape seed oil(yield: $5.0\%/dried$ grape seed). Physicochemical characteristics of the purified grape seed oil were comparable to those of the imported grape seed oils.
This study was conducted to develop a method for the quantitative determination of soil clay content by spectophotometry. The optimum wavelength obtained with reference clay minerals for spectrophotometry was 500 nm. For the proposed spectrophotometry, 0.5 g of soil sample was put in the 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask and 100 ml dispersing agent was added. After shaking the flask at 130 rpm with a mechanical shaker overnight, the flask was removed from the shaker and was shaken up-and-down for 30 seconds. With a micro-pipet, 4 ml of the suspension was transferred into the previously-inserted cell and the absorbance was measured instantly. Results by the spectrophotometry for clay content analysis were compared with those by the conventional sedimentation technique (the pipet method). The proposed equation was $y\;=\;38.03x_1-0.17x_2-1.17$, where y, $x_1$, and $x_2$ were clay content (%) by the pipet method, water content corrected clay content (%) by spectrophotometry, and organic matter content ($g{\cdot}kg^{-1}$), respectively. The regression coefficient for the equation was $r\;=\;0.984^{**}$, indicating highly significant correlation between the results of the two methods.
Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients may experience fluent mobility upon awakening from a night's sleep, which is called sleep benefit (SB). Although SB is a phenomenon closely associated with sleep, sleep features of PD are not well characterized. The objectives of this study were, first, to investigate if there are any clinical characteristic features between patients with SB and without SB (NSB), and second, to examine if SB patients are associated with any specific sleep variables compared with NSB patients. Methods: Thirty-three PD patients (14 men and 19 women) participated in this study. All subjects were interviewed to examine whether or not they had SB and overnight polysomnography was performed at the sleep center. Various clinical variables were collected through medical record review. Results: The 331 PD patients were divided into 16 SB group (48.5%) and 17 NSB group (51.5%). SB patients were younger (p<0.02), had higher sleep efficiency (p<0.05), and showed shortened sleep latency (p<0.02) as compared with NSB patients. However, no difference was found between SB and NSB with respect to gender, duration or stage of PD, antiparkinsonian medications prescribed, and predominant motor symptoms. SB did not clearly relate to a specific sleep stage and other sleep variables except sleep efficiency and sleep latency. Although primary snoring was more prevalent in SB patients (p<0.05), other sleep disorders were seen with equal frequency in SB and NSB groups. Conclusion: Our results suggest that good sleep efficiency, shortened sleep latency, and age may have an effect on morning motor function (i.e., SB) in Parkinson's disease.
Background: In 1992, we first developed the technique for video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy to treat palmar hyperhidrosis. It was soon proven to be a simple and effective therapy for essential hyperhidrosis. Clinically, patients suffereing from distressing hyperhidrosis in their heads and faces were observed. Materials and methods: From March 1997 to March 1998, the vidio-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy and sympathicotomy were performed in 60 patients suffering from craniofacial hyperhidrosis in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in the Respiratory Center of Yongdong Severance Hospital Seoul, Korea. Thirty-nine patients underwent a conventional sympathectomy(T1 sympathectomy group), and twenty-one patients underwent division of the sympathetic nerve trunk above the T2 sympathetic ganglion(T2 sympathicotomy). The median follow up was 9 months. Results: All of the treated patients obtained satisfactory alleviation of craniofacial hyperhidrosis. No recurrence was observed in group T1 sympathectomy whereas one occurred in sympathicotomy. The global rate of compensatory sweating was about the same in both groups ; 76.9% in T1 sympathectomy and 76.2% in T2 sympathicotomy. The rate of embarrassing and disabling compensatory sweating was 38.5% in T1 sympathectomy and 38.1% in T2 sympathicotomy with no significant in the statistic analysis(p> 0.05). No transient Horner's syndrome was observed in group T2 sympathicotomy whereas seven occurred in T1 sympathectomy with improvement in follow-up. Only an overnight hospital stay was required in both group. Conclusions: The video-assist thoracoscopic sympathicotomy is minimally invasive and effective. Video-assisted thoracoscopic T2 sympathicotomy has proven to be effective method and less complicated in treating patients with distressing craniofacial hyperhidrosis and consistent in obtaining the same results as T1 sympathectomy.
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with several cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanisms are not completely understood. The measure of common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) has been extensively used as an early marker of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that early signs of atherosclerosis are present in patients with OSA and correlate with OSA severity Methods: Eleven male patients with OSA were studied by using full standard overnight polysomnography and high-definition echo-tracking device to measure intima-media thickness and carotid artery diameter. Eight healthy volunteers matched for age and sex were studied by portable respiratory monitoring device. All participants were free of hypertension, diabetes, and were not on any medications. Patients with OSA were naive to treatment. Results: All patients and normal controls were male. There was no significant difference of age between patients and controls ($48.4{\pm}8.85$ and $48.0{\pm}9.77$). Significant differences existed between control subjects and patients with mild to moderate and severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index, $1.51{\pm}1.15$ and $38.51{\pm}19.13$ respectively) in intima-media thickness ($0.59{\pm}0.064$ and $0.93{\pm}0.16$; P=0.0023), and carotid diameter ($5.79{\pm}0.44$ and $6.47{\pm}0.51$; P=0.0227). Multivariate analyses showed that the apnea-hypopnea index correlated independently with intima-media thickness and carotid diameter (r=0.79, P=0.0008, and r=0.47, P=0.0482). Conclusions: Middle-aged patients with OSA who are free of overt cardiovascular diseases have early signs of atherosclerosis, which further supports the hypothesis that OSA plays an independent role in atherosclerosis progression.
Objectives : Many studies have shown an association between serum lipid concentrations and psychologic characteristics. However, conflicting results have also been reported. This study was designed to find the relationship between serum lipid levels(cholesterol and triglycerides) and psychologic characteristics(impulsiveness, aggressiveness, depressiveness) in adolescents. Methods : Serum cholesterol concentration, serum triglycerides concentration, complete blood count, electrolytes, liver function test, and blood sugar level were measured by overnight fasting blood sampling and urinalysis was also conducted in 407 high school students. Impulsiveness level was measured by Barratt Impulsiveness Scale(BIS). Aggressiveness level was measured by Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory(BDHI). Depressiveness level was measured by Beck Depression Inventory(BDI). Serum cholesterol was measured by standard enzymatic assay and serum triglycerides was measured by Boehringer Mannheim method. Results : 1) Low cholesterol group(<15 percentile) were found to have significantly higher BIS score than high cholesterol group(>85 percentile) in female. Female low cholesterol group were also found to have significantly higher motor impulsivity score, a subscale of BIS, than high cholesterol group. 2) High triglycerides group(>85 percentile) were found to have significantly higher BDI score than low triglycerides group(<15 percentile) in male and female separately. Especially, male high triglycerides group were also found to have significantly higher BIS and motor impulsivity score than low triglycerides group. Conclusion : These results support the previous hypothesis that serum lipid levels(cholesterol and triglycerides) affect human psychologic characteristics.

Objective: To study the PLCE1 gene rs2274223 polymorphism with regard to esophageal cancer and its interaction with diet, lifestyle, psychological and environmental factors in Southwest Shandong province. Materials and Methods: A case series study (case-case) was conducted. Questionnaire data were collected and 3 ml-5ml venous blood was drawn for DNA extraction among the qualified research subjects. PLCE1 gene polymorphism was detected after PCR amplification of DNA. SPSS 13.0 software was used for statistical analysis of the data. Results: The three genotypes A/A, A/G and G/G PLCE1 gene rs2274223 was 31, 16 and 4 cases, accounting for 60.8%, 31.4%, 0.08% respectively. The difference of three genotypes (AA/GA/GG) proportion between negative and positive family history of patients was statistically significant, ${\chi}^2=6.213$, p=0.045. There was no statistically significant relationship between PLCE1 gene rs2274223 polymorphism and smoking, drinking, ${\chi}^2=0.119$, p=0.998, and ${\chi}^2=1.727$, p=0.786. There was no linkage of the three rs2274223 PLCE1 gene genotypes (AA/GA/GG) proportion with eating fried, pickled, hot, mildew, overnight, smoked, excitant food, eat speed, salt taste or not (p>0.05). or with living environment pollution and nine risk factors of occupational exposure (p>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in TS scores between different genotype of rs2274223 PLCE1 gene. Conclusions: The PLCE1 rs2274223 polymorphism has a relationship with family history of esophageal cancer, but does not have any significant association with age, gender, smoking, alcohol drinking, food hygiene, eating habits, living around the environment and occupation in cases.
Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the possible differences in sleepiness, performance, and body temperature during the night between morning(M) and evening(E) type subjects. Methods: After a survey study, to verify the validity and reliability of the Korean translation of the Home' and $\ddot{O}stberg's$ Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire(1976), 8 extreme M-type subjects(3males, 5 females) and 8 extreme E-type subjects(3 males, 5 females) were selected from the university student population who had participated in the survey study. All subjects underwent sleep latency test and a battery of performance tests at intervals of 2 hours through the night, from 23:00 to 07:00. Oral temperature of each subject was taken every hour from 21 : 00 to 8 : 00. Between the testing times, the experimenters ensured that subjects remained awake. Results: More profound sleepiness was found in the M-type compared to the E-type throughout the night, with significant differences in sleepiness occuring at 23:00 and 01:00 hours. Overall performance efficiency tended to be lower through, the night in the M-type than in the E-type on all tests. A difference in time of temperature minimum between the two types was not noteworthy. Rather, there appeared to be a substantial difference in temperature level during the declining phase, with the temperature of the M-type being lower than that of the E-type. Conclusions: These results indicate the existance of a temporal relationship between sleepiness, perfonnance and body temperature during night work. Since the M-type exhibited greater sleepiness and lower performance efficiency overnight than the E-type, it may be assumed that the E-type is more suitable for and tolerable to night work. There was some discussion of the limitations in generalizing these results together with some suggestions for future studies.

Objective : Myeongganbo (MGB) composited with Hovenia Semen, Puerariae Radix and Dioscoreae Rhizoma is the prescription for protection of liver function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of MGB extract against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury in mice. Methods : MGB extract was prepared by extracting with hot distilled water. The extract was freeze-dried following filtration through vacuum distillation system. Mice fasted for overnight were orally administrated with or without MGB extract of different doses (25-200 mg/kg/day). After 30 min, APAP was orally applied with a single dose (400 mg/kg). The levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured in plasmas of mice. Glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase GSH-px), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) level were investigated in liver homogenates. Liver sections were stained with haematoxylin & eosin, anti-TNF-${\alpha}$ and anti-mouse COX-2 antibodies. Results : APAP treatment remarkably increased AST and ALT activities in plasma but inhibited GSH and GSH-px levels in liver homogenates. Also, liver injury was significantly accelerated by APAP treatment. Furthermore, APAP remarkably elevated COX-2 activity and TNF-${\alpha}$ levels in liver homogenates. However, administration of MGB extract was able to counteract these effects. Histological studies provided supportive evidence for biochemical and molecular analysis Conclusions : These results suggest that MGB extract has potent hepatoprotective effect against APAP-induced liver injury, these properties may contribute to liver disease care.

Objective: It has been reported that the sleep apnea syndrome in the asthmatic patients is prevalent, however, the systematic study in this field using polysomnography has rarely been performed. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and the pulmonary function in asthmatic children. Methods: This study enrolled 19 male and 12 female asthmatic children aged 6-13 years (average $8.2{\pm}1.7$ years old). Complete overnight polysomnography and pulmonary function test were performed for the participants. Results: Of the 31 asthmatic children, 21 (67.7%) met the diagnostic criteria of the pediatric sleep apnea and the average AHI was $1.7{\pm}1.5/h$. The children with higher AHI showed poorer pulmonary function ($FEV_1$/FVC ratio: p=0.002, $FEV_1$%pred: p=0.047). Conclusion: These results suggest that the prevalence of the pediatric sleep apnea could be very high among the asthmatic children and the severity of the sleep apnea correlates with the pulmonary function. However, the case-control study to compare the AHI between the asthma and control groups is absolutely necessary because few normative data are available for the children.
