The one of the most important concerns in the design of the final cover system is to restrict percolation of water into the waste body. To minimize entering the water, the final cover system has the barrier layer that consists of a single compacted clay liner(CCL) or a composite liner with high density polyethylene(HDPE) overlying CCL. The HDPE as well as CCL can be damaged by landfill settlements. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the effects of HDPE induced by settlements in the final cover system after closure. The results of the three test that is field test, lysimeter test in laboratory, and prediction of settlement represent that the HDPE in the final cover system is not pretty much affected by settlements and stable on settlements.

The phenomenon of sediment resuspension in rivers and lakes causes contaminants (heavy metals and nutrients) accumulated in the sediment to leach into the overlying water. As a result, it can lead to changes in toxic effects and eutrophication in the aquatic ecosystem. In this regard, it is important to quantitatively determine the amount of contaminants leached during sediment resuspension. In this study, methods for assessing the amount of released contaminants and the types of contaminants potentially released due to sediment resuspension were studied and summarized. Methods for assessing leaching can be divided into three groups based on the principle of causing resuspension: (i) the oscillating grid chamber method, (ii) the mechanical stirrer method, and (iii) the shaker method. It was confirmed that the types of contaminants that can potentially be released include heavy metals bound to sulfides, as well as exchangeable and labile forms of heavy metals and nutrients. To effectively manage stable aquatic ecosystems in the future, a simplified leaching test method is needed to assess in advance the risks (i.e., changes in toxic effects and eutrophication) that sediment resuspension may pose to aquatic ecosystems.

We incubated marine columnar sediments at $25^{\circ}C$ for 230 days to simulate the responses of phosphorus in the sediment which was exposed to freshwater. The incubation was composed of three different treatments (FW: freshwater, FWA: freshwater under anoxic condition, and SW: seawater as a Control). Six particulate fractions of phosphorus in sediment were obtained through sequential extraction and, for comparison, phosphate concentrations in porewater and superlying water were also determined. After the incubation, evidently higher concentrations of phosphate were found in FW and FWA compared to SW. Mass extinction of living organisms in marine sediment from freshwater shock and consequent decay of their corps probably contributed such high phosphate spike in the overlying water. Higher concentrations of BD-P(lron-bound P) were found in FW compared to SW. After exposure to the freshwater, we could determine that penetration depth of dissolved oxygen in marine sediment will be deeper. A result of increases of ferrous compounds in freshwater where contained less sulfide has been obtained. Because of these phenomena, BD-P was increased in FW. On the contrary, BD-P was decreased in FWA since poor dissolved oxygen concentration. In FWA, total amount of Leachable P(SUM of LOP) has been remarkably increased through the experiment, which strongly suggested the easy conversion of the leachable P into reactive P. This experiment has shown that most of diverse P species in marine sediment were leachable under freshwater and low oxygen condition. Therefore reclamation of natural tidalfalt and consequent freshwater introduction seems to trigger the conversion of diverse P-species to leachable P in the marine sediments, which will exert high benthic load of phosphate to the overlying water.
A series of pore water data were obtained during the different time over one year period between October 1987 and October 1988, from a site on a muddy intertidal flat, located in the Kyeong-gi Bay, west coast of Korea, The results have revealed that the tidal flat is an environment of active nutrient the subface supplied by the overlying seawater is almost completely removed from the pore water at depth of about 10 cm below the sediment surface. The nutrients such as ammonium and phosphate are produced through this process and subsequently accumulated in the pore water forming steep gradients near the sediment surface. Below the main sulfate redirection zone, a secondary peak of dissolved sulfate was often observed. Greal seasonal variation of the pore water nutrient profiles was observed, which was particularly clear in their maximum concentration as well as in their concentration gradient. The rate constants of sulfate reduction and nutrient regeneration, estimated by using a diagenetic model (Berner, 1980), differ by an order of magnitude between the summer and winter seasons. The difference in sediment temperature may account for most of the calculated variation. The C:N:P ratio, calculated from the pore water nutrient gradients also exhibits a slight seasonal difference. The organic matter being decomposed by sulfate reduction appears to be depleted in depleted in nitrogen, compared to the average marine organic matter.
The interaction between ocean and ice shelf is a critical physical process in relation to water mass transformations and ice shelf melting/freezing at the ocean-ice interface. However, it remains challenging to thoroughly understand the process due to a lack of observational data with respect to ice shelf cavities. This is the first study to simulate the variability and circulation of water mass both overlying the continental shelf and underneath an ice shelf and an ice tongue in the Terra Nova Bay (TNB), East Antarctica. To explore the properties of water mass and circulation patterns in the TNB and the corresponding effects on sub ice shelf basal melting, we explicitly incorporate the dynamic-thermodynamic processes acting on the ice shelf in the Regional Ocean Modeling System. The simulated water mass formation and circulation in the TNB region agree well with previous studies. The model results show that the TNB circulation is dominated by the geostrophic currents driven by lateral density gradients induced by the releasing of brine or freshwater at the polynya of the TNB. Meanwhile, the circulation dynamics in the cavity under the Nansen Ice shelf (NIS) are different from those in the TNB. The gravity-driven bottom current induced by High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) formed at the TNB polynya flows towards the grounding line, and the buoyance-driven flow associated with glacial meltwater generated by the HSSW emerges from the cavity along the ice base. Both current systems compose the thermohaline overturning circulation in the NIS cavity. This study estimates the NIS basal melting rate to be 0.98 m/a, which is comparable to the previously observed melt rate. However, the melting rate shows a significant variation in space and time.

It is important to understand interactions in the sediment-water environment because nitrate (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrient fluxes released into overlying water can represent a significant fraction of the total nutrient requirement for primary productivity. In this study, we analyzed and estimated benthic nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface, investigating environmental conditions in Gomso and Geunso Bays. Also, we compared previously reported nutrient flux data to identify regional differences. As a result, benthic nutrient fluxes in Beopsan were DIN: $6.14mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and DIP: $0.32mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ higher than other survey sites. Sediment COD were $4.0-10.8mg/g{\cdot}dry$, and environmental deterioration was observed due to organic pollution. If no solution is found for tidal flat farm management, problems such as a decrease in aquaculture production will follow. Therefore, long-term monitoring of tidal flat environments should be pursued to enable the sustainable use of biological resources.
Objective: To analyze the fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of fiber-reinforced composite, polyethylene ribbon-reinforced, and braided stainless steel wire lingual retainers in vitro. Methods: Roots of human mandibular central incisors were covered with silicone, mimicking the periodontal ligament, and embedded in polymethylmethacrylate. The specimens (N = 50), with two teeth each, were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10/group) according to the retainer materials: (1) Interlig (E-glass), (2) everStick Ortho (E-glass), (3) DentaPreg Splint (S2-glass), (4) Ribbond (polyethylene), and (5) Quad Cat wire (stainless steel). After the recommended adhesive procedures, the retainers were bonded to the teeth by using flowable composite resin (Tetric Flow). The teeth were subjected to 10,00,000 cyclic loads (8 Hz, 3 - 100 N, $45^{\circ}$ angle, under $37{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ water) at their incisoproximal contact, and debonding forces were measured with a universal testing machine (1 mm/min crosshead speed). Failure sites were examined under a stereomicroscope (${\times}40$ magnification). Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results: All the specimens survived the cyclic loading. Their mean debonding forces were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The DentaPreg Splint group (80%) showed the highest incidence of complete adhesive debonding, followed by the Interlig group (60%). The everStick Ortho group (80%) presented predominantly partial adhesive debonding. The Quad Cat wire group (50%) presented overlying composite detachment. Conclusions: Cyclic loading did not cause debonding. The retainers presented similar debonding forces but different failure types. Braided stainless steel wire retainers presented the most repairable failure type.

The residual oil concentrations in seawater and sediments were investigated along the Taean coast of Korea, following the Hebei Spirit oil spill, which occurred on 7 December 2007. The oil concentration in seawater ranged from 0.059 to $0.866\;{\mu}g/L$ for the tidal flat culture grounds and from 0.016 to $0.943\;{\mu}g/L$ in the fish cage areas in 2008. These were dominated by the seawater temperature relationship. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments were also analyzed and the concentrations ranged from 3.4 to 509.7 ng/g dry weight. The average PAH level was higher in seawater from the Sinduri area than the Padori area, while the average PAH level in sediments was higher in Padori. The diagnostic ratio of PAHs was investigated to determine the origins of the PAHs. The PAHs in the Seongam area, which was not affected by the oil spill, are of pyrolytic origin, while the PAHs in Padori and Sinduri were of petrogenic origin. The residual oils in the areas affected by the oil spill tended to decrease over time, except in summer. The oils in pore water remained 6- to 16-fold higher, as compared to the seawater overlying the tidal flat, implying that residual oils will continue to influence the affected region for the foreseeable future.

This paper presents results of experimental studies on the heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling. The metal pool is heated from the bottom surface and coolant is injected onto the molten metal pool. As a result, the crust, which is a solidified layer, may form at the top of the molten metal pool. Heat transfer is accomplished by a conjugate mechanism, which consists of the natural convection of the molten metal pool, the conduction in the crust layer and the convective boiling heat transfer in the coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer rate on the molten metal pool with boiling coolant. The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water is used as the working coolant. The crust layer thickness was ostensibly varied by the heated bottom surface temperature of the test section, but not much affected by the coolant injection rate. The correlation beかeon the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study is compared against the crust formation experiment without coolant boiling and the literature correlations. The present experimental results are higher than those from the experiment without coolant boiling, but show general agreement with the Eckert correlation, with some deviations in the high and low ends of the Rayleigh number. This discrepancy is currently attributed to concurrent rapid boiling of the coolant on top of the metal layer.
ATP concentrations far estimating total microbial biomass in the sediment were measured in three different marine sedimentary environments. ATP concentrations were highest in the surface sediment and decreased with increasing sediment depth and distance from the land. The results indicated that the benthic microbial biomass is primarily controlled by nutrient inputs from the overlying water column. Because of the longer residence time and adsorption to the sediment, the variations in organic carbon (OC) contents with sites and depths were not as distinct as that of ATP, and the correlation between OC and ATP was not significant in the coastal sediments. No significant correlation between OC and ATP in the coastal sediments also suggested that microbial biomass in the labile organic-enriched coastal sediment is suppressed by the grazing of higher trophic level such as meiofauna. Overall regional and vertical distribution of ATP indicated that h\`w can be a relevant tool for measuring total microbial biomass in various marine sedimentary environments.
