  • Construction delays occur frequently in outrigger framework of tall buildings due to the unexpected conditions and lack of experience. However, delay factors of the outrigger framework has not been managed efficiently. Therefore, the systematic management is needed by perceiving possible delay factors before constructing management system. In this study, the major delay factors of outrigger framework are conducted to derive by using the Importance Performance Analysis(IPA). It is expected that the results of this study are utilized for planning of systematic scheduling in outrigger framework of tall building.

  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift and evaluates the structural behavior characteristics and efficiency for tall outrigger system subject to lateral loads. To this end, displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of outrigger system is established and approximation concept that can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Specifically, under the 'constant-shape' assumption, resizing technique of member is developed. Two types of 60 story frameworks are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to consider floor rigid diaphragm action and a technique to evaluate the structural behavior characteristics and efficiency for tall shear wall outrigger system subject to horizontal loads. To this end, isoparametric plane stress element with rotational stiffness is used for shear wall element and stiffness gradient is calculated. Also, the approximation concept to solve effectively the large scaled problems, member grouping technique and resizing technique are considered. To verify the effectiveness and usefulness of this technique, the efficient evaluation method for three types of 50 story model with core and outrigger system is presented.

  • In this article, an additive performance ratio method using structural analysis of both 2D and 3D is introduced to mitigate the complexity of work evaluating structural performances of numerous steel outrigger alternatives in multi-story buildings, especially high-rise buildings. The combined structural analysis process enables to be the design of economic, safe, and as constructional demanding structures by exploiting the advantages of steel, namely: excellent energy dissipation and ductility. First the approach decides the alternative of numerous steel outriggers by a simple 2D analysis module and then the alternative is evaluated by 3D analysis module. Initial structural analyses of outrigger types are carried out through MIDAS Gen 2D modeling, approximately, and then the results appeal structural performance and lead to decide some alternative of outrigger types. ETABS 3D modeling is used with respect to realization and evaluation of exact structural behaviors. The approach reduces computational burden in compared to existing concepts such as full 3D analysis methods. The combined 2D and 3D tools are verified by cycle and displacement tests including comprehensive nonlinear dynamic simulations. The advantages and limitations of the Additive Performance Ratio Approach are highlighted in a case study on a high rise steel-composite building, which targets at designing the optimized alternative to the existing original outrigger for lateral load resisting system.

  • The outrigger damper system is a structural system with excellent lateral resistance when a wind load occurs. However, research on outrigger dampers is still in its infancy. In this study, dynamic response control performance of damper is analyzed according to change of stiffness value and damping value of damper. To do this, a real-scale 3D model of 50 stories has been developed and the artificial wind load has been entered for dynamic analysis. Generally, the larger the damping value, the smaller the stiffness value is, the more effective it is to reduce the maximum displacement and acceleration response. However, the larger the attenuation value as the cost of construction increases, it is necessary to select appropriate stiffness and damping value when applying an outrigger damper.

  • This study purposed to investigate the optimal outrigger location in tall building with cap truss after a structural schematic design of 80 stories building was performed by using MIDAS-Gen. In this paper, the main parameters of structural analysis were the outrigger location and stiffness of main structural elements (outrigger, exterior column, shear wall etc). In order to search the optimal outrigger position in high-rise building with cap truss, we analysed and examined the lateral displacement of top floor which is one of the very important considering factors of tall building structural design. The paper results indicated that the outrigger location and the stiffness of main structural elements such as outrigger, exterior column and shear wall had an effect on the optimal outrigger location. And it is verified that the study results provided the basic engineering data for fixing the most optimal outrigger location for minimizing the lateral displacement of tall building.

  • Seismic responses of RC core wall with two outriggers are investigated in this study. In the models analyzed here, one of the outriggers is fixed at the top of the building and the second is placed at different levels along the height of the system. Each of the systems resulting from the placement of the outrigger at different locations is designed according to the prescriptive codes. The location of the outrigger changes along the height. Linear design of all the structures is accomplished by using prescriptive codes. Buckling restrained braces (BRBs) are used in the outriggers and forward directivity near fault and far fault earthquake record sets are used at maximum considered earthquake (MCE) level. Results from nonlinear time history analysis demonstrate that BRB outriggers can change the seismic responses like force distribution and deformation demand of the RC core-walls over the height and lead to the new plastic hinge arrangement over the core-wall height. Plasticity extension in the RC core wall occurs at the base as well as adjacent to the outrigger levels. Considering the maximum inter-story drift ratio (IDR) demand as an engineering parameter, the best location for the second outrigger is at 0.75H, in which the maximum IDR at the region upper the second outrigger level is approximately equal to the corresponding value in the lower region.

  • Recently, the construction of tall buildings utilized by high strength-concrete in the whole world is tending to be on the rise. The application of high-rise structural system in buildings results in the excellent cut-down effect in construction materials due to section reduction. Therefore, in order to investigate the CO2 and resource reduction effect for the high-rise structural system, comparisons of GWP and ADP in embodied energy of structural materlais between 4 type of high-rise structural system have been performed. As a result, GWP emission increased in the order of steel structure outrigger system, RC shear wall system, and RC outrigger system. On the other hand, ADP emissions increased in the order of RC shear wall system, RC outrigger system, and steel structure outrigger system.

  • In this paper a simple mathematical model is presented for estimating the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of a tall building with outrigger-belt truss system. For this purposes an equivalent continuum system is analyzed in which a tall building structure is replaced by an idealized cantilever continuum beam representing the structural characteristics. The equivalent system is comprised of a cantilever shear beam in parallel to a cantilever flexural beam that is constrained by a rotational spring at outrigger-belt truss location. The mathematical modeling and the derivation of the equation of motion are given for the cantilevers with identically paralleled and rotational spring. The equation of motion and the associated boundary conditions are analytically obtained by using Hamilton's variational principle. After obtaining non-trivial solution of the eigensystem, the resulting is used to determine the natural frequencies and associated mode shapes of free vibration analysis. A numerical example for a 40 story tall building has been solved with proposed method and finite element method. The results of the proposed mathematical model have good adaptation with those obtained from finite element analysis. Proposed model is practically suitable for quick evaluations during the preliminary design stages.
