  • Purpose : This study was to provide the methods of developing the growth charts and the blood pressure nomogram among Korean children and adolescents. Methods : The growth charts were developed based on the data from the national growth surveys for children and adolescents in 1998 and 2005. The percentile charts were developed through two stages. At the first stage, the selected empirical charts were smoothed through several fitting procedures including parametric and non-parametric methods. At the second stage, a modified LMS (lambda, mu, sigma) statistical procedure was applied to the smoothed percentile charts. The LMS procedure allowed to estimate any percentile and to calculate standard deviation units and z-scores. The charts for weight-for-age, height-for-age, BMI-for-age, weight-for-height and head circumference-for-age were developed by sex. Age and normalized height controlled sex-specific nomograms of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were developed by a fixed effect model of general regression using the data from 2005 national growth survey. Results : The significant systemic differences between the percentiles of growth charts and the empirical data were not found. The final output of the study is available from Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention homepage, http://www.cdc.go.kr/webcdc/. Blood Pressure nomogram was tabulated by height percentiles and age using the regression coefficients analyzed with regression model. Conclusion : 2007 growth charts and blood pressure nomogram were the first products based on the statistical modeling using the national survey data. The further study on the methodology including data collection, data cleaning and statistical modeling for representative growth charts would be needed.

  • This study defines the biotechnology industry, examines its position in the domestic economy, and analyses its structure with I-O tables of year 1985, 1990 and 1995. Structural decomposition analysis is used in order to estimate the impact of different sources of growth. We classifies Korean biotechnology industry into 6 sectors, based on the survey of domestic biotechnology industry by Bioindustry Association of Korea. Empirical results indicate that each sector of bioindustry has various sources of growth and industrial demand has led the growth in all sectors except for food-bio and agriculture-bio. For the growth of the industry, each sector needs to cope with the change of the private demand and to improve the import and export structure.

  • IoT(Internet of Things) is applied to technologies such as agriculture and dairy farming, making it possible to cultivate crops easily and easily in cities. In particular, IoT technology that intelligently judge and control the growth environment of cultivated crops in the agricultural field is being developed. In this paper, we propose a method of predicting the growth environment of plants by learning the moisture supply cycle of plants using the intelligent object internet. The proposed system finds the moisture level of the soil moisture by mapping learning and finds the rules that require moisture supply based on the measured moisture level. Based on these rules, we predicted the moisture supply cycle and output it using media, so that it is convenient for users to use. In addition, in order to reduce the error of the value measured by the sensor, the information of each plant is exchanged with each other, so that the accuracy of the prediction is improved while compensating the value when there is an error. In order to evaluate the performance of the growth environment prediction system, the experiment was conducted in summer and winter and it was verified that the accuracy was high.

  • The roots of Platycodon grandiflorum has been widely used as a crude drug or a food stuff. Unfortunately, the output and the quality is not regular and highly dependent on the cultivation area and cultivation method. Therefore, seedling cultivation study of this plant under structure with various fertilizer supply was performed. As a result, significant big difference between ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen content was shown in the root at seedling stage while the difference was not significant in the aerial parts. Fresh weight of the root (7.73 g plant$^{-1}$) was higher in the group treated with three major nutrients (N, P and K) than in those treated with three major nutrients and calcium or magnesium or both calcium and magnesium, and non-treated group (2.69 g plant$^{-1}$). Total nitrogen content was recognized to be significantly correlated with root weight, plant height, number of leaves and weight of aerial parts. Ammonium nitrogen content was more correlated the growth of P. grandiflorum than nitrate nitrogen. For phosphoric acid, significant correlation was also shown with the four growth factors.

  • Ideas do not become exhausted, and there are no diminishing returns in the creation of knowledge. Nonetheless, growth ultimately ceases in this simplest model of endogeneous innovation. The reasons are similar to those that are discussed in the context of the neoclassical model of capital accumulation. Even if the resource cost of creating new goods does not rise, the economic return to invention may decline as the number of available products increases. When the rate of return to R&D falls to the level of the discount rate, private agents cease to be willing to defer consumption in order to invest in product development. But, if we treat knowledge capital as a public capital considering of its non-appropriable benefits, economic growth can be sustained in the economy. Romer(1986) has pointed out that growth might be sustainable if the accumulation of knowledge is not subject to long-run diminishing returns. Actually Romer assumed diminishing returns in the production of private knowledge from available resources, but increasing returns in the production of output from labor and total (public and private) knowledge. His condition for the sustainability of long-run growth amounts to an assumption that the diminishing returns in the former activity do not outweigh the increasing returns in the latter. The Johansen(1988) cointegration test method is used for finding long-run equilibrium relationship between R&D input and the product innovation. Test results indicate the existence of cointegrating equation between each pair of regression variables including dependent variable in the knowledge production function. And, the signs of cointegrating vectors are well accord to the prediction of sustainable growth. In the empirical analysis, from all cases of the form for the knowledge production function, we could not reject the null hypothesis that R&D spillover effect is significant($H_{0}:\;{\gamma}=1$). In summary, we showed that considering goodness of fit of regression model, we can see that the empirical evidence is strongly in favor of the character of knowledge as the public knowledge capital. So, we can expect that by product innovation, economic growth can be sustained in the Korean economy.

  • Under nanosecond-pulsed laser irradiation, light-absorbing thin films have been used for photoacoustic transmitters for ultrasound generation. Especially, nanostructured absorbers are attractive due to high optical absorption and efficient thermoacoustic energy conversion: for example, 2-dimensional (2-D) gold nanostructure array, synthetic gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced graphene oxides. Among them, CNT has been used to fabricate a composite film with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that exhibits excellent photoacoustic conversion performance for high-frequency, high-amplitude ultrasound generation. Previously, CNT-PDMS nanocomposite films were made by using a high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD) process for CNT growth. However, this approach is not suitable to fabricate large-area CNT films (>several cm2). This is because a chamber dimension of HTCVD is limited and also the process often causes nonuniform CNT growth when the film area increases. As an alternative approach, a solution-based process can be used to overcome these issues. We develop PDMS composite transmitters, based on the solution process, using several nanostructured light-absorbers such as CNTs, nanoink powders, and imprinted regular arrays of gold nanostructure. We compare fabrication processes of each composite transmitters and photoacoustic output performance.

  • Alexandrite-like cubic zirconia single crystals were grown by skull melting method. The R.F. generator (output power is 35 ㎾) used for skull melting was operated at 2 MHz. The grown crystals were doped with up to 1 or 1.5 wt% and 0.5 or 1 wt% of rare earth metal ion (Pr, Nd) on$ ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$ (12 mol%). The grown crystals were cut for slice (0.25 mm) and round brilliant (12 mm in diameter). The cut stones were heat treated in air and nitrogen at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and their optical absorption spectra ($\lambda$ = 400∼700 nm) data were obtained.

  • To increase the light-emission efficiency of LED, we increased the internal and external quantum efficiency by suppressing the defect formation in the quantum well and by increasing the light extraction efficiency in LED, respectively. First, the internal quantum efficiency was improved by investigating the effect of a low temperature (LT) grown p-GaN layer on the In$\sub$0.25/GaN/GaN MQW in green LED. The properties of p-GaN was optimized at a low growth temperature of 900oC. A green LED using the optimized LT p-type GaN clearly showed the elimination of blue-shift which is originated by the MQW damage due to the high temperature growth process. This result was attributed to the suppression of indium inter-diffusion in MQW layer as evidenced by XRD and HR-TEM analysis. Secondly, we improved the light-extraction efficiency of LED. In spite of high internal quantum efficiency of GaN-based LED, the external quantum efficiency is still low due to the total internal reflection of the light at the semiconductor-air interface. To improve the probability of escaping the photons outside from the LED structure, we fabricated nano-sized cavities on a p-GaN surface utilizing Pt self-assembled metal clusters as an etch mask. Electroluminescence measurement showed that the relative optical output power was increased up to 80% compared to that of LED without nano-sized cavities. I-V measurement also showed that the electrical performance was improved. The enhanced LED performance was attributed to the enhancement of light escaping probability and the decrease of resistance due to the increase in contact area.

  • Dust-collecting behavior of tonpilz transducer was simulated with finite-element-method (FEM) software. In order to optimize the performance of tonpilz transducer, the shape factors including the thickness of head mass, the diameter of tail mass and the depth of bolt were analyzed as variables. As a vibrating energy source, the piezoelectric materials was also tested with PZT-4 and two kinds of piezoelectric single crystals. The output power of the transducer was maximized with the shape factors and then the behavior of the dust-collection was demonstrated with the multi-physics software, COMSOL.
