  • A piezoelectric flextentional sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns, resonant frequencies, bandwidths, quality factors, output acoustic powers and transmitting voltage responses. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers. The results of the present sonar transducer modelling are also compared with those of a commercial package such as ATILA.

  • A fiber-coupled laser-diode pumped ceramic Nd:YAG laser for compensating the thermal tensing effect was developed. The thermal tensing effect was compensated using a convex lens, which was 25 mm away from the laser rod, with a focal length of 30 mm and an effective clear aperture of 22 mm. Without a compensator, the laser output power decreased suddenly above a pump power of 6 W. Using a compensator, the laser output power increased linearly according to the pump power. The beam propagation factor $M^{2}$ was 2.4 under a pump power of 12 W.

  • This work describes the development and comparison of two phase-locked loops (PLLs) based on a 65-nm CMOS technology. The PLLs incorporate two different topologies for the output voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO): LC cross-coupled and differential Colpitts. The measured locking ranges of the LC cross-coupled VCO-based phase-locked loop (PLL1) and the Colpitts VCO-based phase-locked loop (PLL2) are 119.84-122.61 GHz and 126.53-129.29 GHz, respectively. Th e output powers of PLL1 and PLL2 are -8.6 dBm and -10.5 dBm with DC power consumptions of 127.3 mW and 142.8 mW, respectively. Th e measured phase noise of PLL1 is -59.2 at 10 kHz offset and -104.5 at 10 MHz offset, and the phase noise of PLL2 is -60.9 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and -104.4 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset. The chip sizes are $1,080{\mu}m{\times}760{\mu}m$ (PLL1) and $1,100{\mu}m{\times}800{\mu}m$ (PLL2), including the probing pads.

  • In this paper, a Quadrature Voltage Controlled Oscillator of a wireless transceiver operating in the 5GHz UNII band of the wireless LAN 802.11a standard was proposed. In addition, a new structure of low-noise, low-power Quadrature Coupled VCO was proposed using the quadrature phase output as an input to the switching current source. If this structure is applied to other circuits such as a structure in which the current source is separated or a common use of a current source, a phase noise characteristic of 17 dB better than the existing VCO can be obtained. In particular, it is designed to operate with low power in a simple structure compared to the existing in-phase QVCO. The circuit was designed to operate with a supply voltage of 1.2V by the TSMC 0.13㎛ RF CMOS process. The measured VCO has a large tuning range of 20% operating at frequencies of 4.5 - 5.6 GHz, and phase noise of -117 dBc/Hz or less was obtained at the 1 MHz offset. The output phase error of the proposed QVCO was less than 0.5 degrees, and the total power consumption was able to obtain 5.3 mW at 1.2V.

  • This paper proposes a control method for maintaining the energy level for a supercapacitor energy storage system coupled with a wind generator to stabilize wind power output. Although wind power is green and clean energy source, disadvantage of the renewable energy output power is fluctuation. In order to mitigate the fluctuating output power, supercapacitor energy storage system (SCESS) and wind power simulator is developed. A remaining energy supercapacitor (RESC) control is introduced and analyzed to smooth for short-term fluctuating power and maintain the supercapacitor voltage within the designed operating range in the steady as well as transient state. When the average and fluctuating component of power increases instantaneously, the RESC compensates fluctuating power and the variation of fluctuating power is reduced 100% to 30% at 5kW power. Furthermore, supercapacitor voltage is maintained within the operating voltage range and near 50% of total energy. Feasibility of SCESS with RESC control is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, the inductive power collector using electromagnetic induction for the PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) system is suggested and some ideas for power collector design to improve the power transfer performance are presented. The proposed the inductive power collector is used for the PRT system, which has a large air-gap and demands a large electrical power capability. But, low output power is generated due to a loosely coupled characteristic of the large air-gap. Therefore, double layer construction of secondary winding. which was divided in half to increase both output current and output voltage was suggested. Also, model of power collector and parallel winding structure are presented, in addition, the performance of inductive power collector to alignment condition between the primary power line and the inductive power transformer was verified by computer simulation of 2kW model.

  • We report an investigation of the statistical fluctuations of the two-mode laser output as the asymmetry parameter is varied. The above results relate to computer solutions of the coupled Langevin equations both with and without pumping fluctuations. We find that as the asymmetry parameter is changed positively, the mean intensity of one mode is increased because the normalized intensity auto-correlation is decreased so that the natural dwell time is lengthen. The laser output does respond to a sinusoidally injected asymmetry parameter for small pump parameter.

  • An active frequency doubler monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) for E-band transceiver applications is presented in this letter. This MMIC has been fabricated in a commercial $0.1-{\mu}m$ GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) process on a 2-mil thick substrate wafer. The fabricated MMIC chip has been measured to have a high output power performance of over 13 dBm with a high fundamental leakage suppression of more than 38 dBc in the frequency range of 71 to 86 GHz under an input signal condition of 10 dBm. A microstrip coupled line is used at the output circuit of the doubler section to implement impedance matching and simultaneously enhance the fundamental leakage suppression. The fabricated chip is has a size of $2.5mm{\times}1.2mm$.
