The air and water flow distributions are experimentally studied for a round header - ten flat tube configuration. Three different inlet orientation modes (parallel, normal, vertical) were investigated. Tests were conducted with downward flow configuration for the mass flux from 70 to $130kg/m^2s$, quality from 0.2 to 0.6, non-dimensional protrusion depth (h/D) from 0,0 to 0.5. It is shown that, for almost all the test conditions, vertical inlet yielded the best flow distribution, followed by normal and parallel inlet. Possible explanation is provided using flow visualization results.
An experimental study was carried out in a uniformly heated horizontal tube to examine heat transfer characteristics of pure refrigerants, R134a and R123, and their mixtures during flow boiling. The flow pattern was also observed through tubular sight glasses with an internal diameter of 10 mm located at the inlet and outlet of the test section. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa and in the heat flux ranges of 5~100 kW/$m^2$, vapor Quality 0~100 percent and mass velocity of 150-600 kg/$m^2$s. The observed flow patterns were compared to the flow pattern map of Kattan et al., which predicted well the present data over the entire range of mass velocity employed in this study. Heat transfer coefficients of the mixture were less than the interpolated values between pure fluids both in the low quality region where the nucleate boiling is dominant and in the high quality region where the convective evaporation is dominant.
In this study, the following factors are investigated from experiments for a vertical parallel plate heat exchanger under the frosting condition ; the growth of frost layer, the characteristics of heat and mass transfer, the change of mass flow rate of the air passing through the heat exchanger, and the pressure drop of the air in the heat exchanger. The amount of heat and mass flux of water vapor transferred from the air stream to the heat exchanger surface is large at the early stage of frosting and then decreases dramatically, and the extent of decreasing rate becomes moderate with time. The frost layer formed near the inlet of the heat exchanger is thicker and denser than that formed near the outlet. It is found that the gradient of the amount of frost along the flow direction increases with time. In the early period of frost formation, the thermal resistance between the air and the cooling plate increases dramatically and then the extent of change decreases with time. Initially the convective thermal resistance is dominant. Then, while the convective thermal resistance decreases with time, the conductive thermal resistance continues to increase with time and finally the conductive thermal resistance becomes dominant.

In the present study, a computational analysis of the flow in a centrifugal blower is carried out to predict a performance and to explain noise characteristics of the blower. Unsteady, 3D Navier-Stokes equations were solved with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model using CFX software. CFD results were compared with the experimental data that is acquired from an experiment conducted with the same blower. The pressure fluctuation in the blower was transformed into the frequency domain by Fourier decomposition to find the relationship between flow behaviors and noise characteristics. Sound pressure level (SPL) which is obtained from wall pressure fluctuation at impeller outlet represents relative overall sound level of the blower well. Sound spectra show that there are some specific peak frequencies at each mass flow rate and it can be explained by flow pattern.
It is known that the fluidized bed incinerator, which is the subject of analysis, shows excellent performance in heat and mass transfer due to excellent mixing and contact performance between fluidized sand and fuel, and also shows relatively good combustion characteristics thanks to good mixing and long residence time for low-grade fuels. have. In this study, air flow analysis is performed to understand the characteristics of co-firing of sludge, waste oil and solid waste in the fluidized bed incinerator, flow characteristics of flue gas, and discharge characteristics of pollutants. The fluidized bed incinerator subject to analysis is a facility that incinerates factory waste and general household waste together with sludge, with a processing capacity of 32 tons/day. to be. In addition, the operation method was designed for continuous operation for 24 hours. As a result, it can be seen that the lower combustion air and the introduced secondary air are changed to a strong turbulence and swirl flow form and exit through the outlet while rotating inside the freeboard layer. The homogeneous one-way flow form before reaching the secondary air nozzle has very high diffusivity with the high-speed jet flow of the nozzle.
A numerical program has been developed for the simulation of automotive engine cooling system. The program determines the mass flow rate of engine coolant circulating the engine cooling system and radiator cooling air when the engine speed is adopted by appropriate empirical correlation. The program used the method of thermal balance at individual element through the model for radiator component in radiator analysis. This study has developed the program that predicts the coolant mass flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of each component in the engine cooling system (engine, transmission, radiator and oil cooler) in its state of thermal equilibrium. This study also combined the individual programs and united into the total performance analysis program of the engine cooling system operating at a constant vehicle speed. An air conditioner system is also included in this engine cooling system so that the condenser of the air conditioner faces the radiator. The effect of air conditioner to the cooling performance, e.g., radiator inlet temperature, of the radiator and engine system was examined. This study could make standards of design of radiator capacity using heat rejection with respect to the mass flow rate of cooling air. This study is intended to predict the performance of each component at design step or to simulate the system when specification of the component is modified, and to analyze the performance of the total vehicle engine cooling system.
A theoretical model was developed to evaluate the effects of soil and airflow characteristics on the soil-air heat exchanger performances. The model, which includes three-dimensional transient energy and mass equilibrium-equation, was solved by using a computer program that uses Finite Difference Methods and Gauss-Seidel iteration computation. Energy gains, heat exchange efficiencies, and outlet air temperature are presented including the effects of soil moisture content, soil conductivity, soil thermal diffusivity, and soil initial temperature. Also, data related to the effects of airflow rate and inlet air temperature on the thermal performance of the system are presented. The results indicated that energy gains depend on soil conductivity, soil thermal diffusivity, and soil initial temperature. Heat exchange efficiencies relied on air mass flow rate and soil moisture content.
The problem of determining the discharge rates of gases from pressurized vessels through pressure relief devices was dealt with comprehensively. First, starting from basic fluid flow equations, detailed modeling procedures were presented for isentropic nozzle flows and frictional flows in a pipe, respectively. Meanwhile, physical explanations were given to choking phenomena in terms of the acoustic velocity, elucidating the widespread use of Mach numbers in gas flow models. Frictional flows in a pipe were classified into adiabatic, isothermal, and general flows according to the heat transfer situation around the pipe, but the adiabatic flow model was recommended suitable for gas discharge through pressure relief devices. Next, for the isentropic nozzle flow followed by adiabatic frictional flow in the pipe, two equations were established for two unknowns that consist of the Mach numbers at the inlet and outlet of the pipe, respectively. The relationship among the ratio of downstream reservoir pressure to upstream pressure, mass flux, and total frictional loss coefficient was shown in various forms of MATLAB 2-D plot, 3-D surface plot and contour plot. Then, the profiles of gas properties and velocity in the pipe section were traced. A method to quantify the relationship among the pressure head, velocity head, and total friction loss was presented, and was used in inferring that the rapid increase in gas velocity in the region approaching the choked flow at the pipe outlet is attributed to the conversion of internal energy to kinetic energy. Finally, the Levenspiel chart reproduced in this work was compared with the Lapple chart used in API 521 Standatd.
A numerical study of three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer in the metering section of a single screw extruder has been performed. The mathematical model for the screw channel is simplified by unwound channel and fixing the coordinate system to the screw. The pressure boundary and the prescribed mass flow rate conditions are imposed on the inlet and outlet, respectively. The commercial code STAR-CD based on the finite volume method is used to obtain the results of the present work. The computation of the reverse flow, which cannot be computed by the marching-type 3-D model, is performed in the present study.
A novel particle removal system for air handling unit (AHU) of subway station was evaluated experimentally. The novel system was designed in order to minimize the maintenance cost by applying axial-flow cyclones. The system consists of multiple cyclone units and dust trap. Based on our previous numerical study, it was found to be effective for removal $1\sim10{\mu}m$ sized dust particles. In this study, we manufactured the mock-up model and evaluated the model experimentally. Liquid and solid test particles were generated for evaluating collection efficiency of the system and the pressure drop was monitored. The collection efficiency was varied from 41.2% to 85.9% with increasing the sizes of particle from 1 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by particle count ratio of inlet and outlet. The pressure drop was maintained constant less than $20mmH_2O$. In addition, the collection efficiency was estimated by total mass for solid test particles. It was found that the collection efficiency was 65.7% by particle mass ratio of inlet and outlet. It shows that present system can replace current pre-filters used in subway HVAC system for removing particulate matters with minimal operational cost.
