  • A numerical model which simulates the simultaneous heat and mass transfer within a vertical tube GAX absorber was developed. The ammonia vapor and the solution liquid are in counter-current flow, and the hydronic fluid flows counter to the solution liquid. The film thickness and the velocity distribution of the liquid film were obtained by matching the shear stress at the liquid-vapor interface. Two-dimensional diffusion and energy equations were solved in the liquid film to give the temperature and concentration, and a modified Colburn-Drew analysis was used for the vapor phase to determine the heat and mass fluxes at the liquid-vapor interface. The model was applied to a GAX absorber to investigate the absorption rates, temperature and concentration profiles, and mass flow rates of liquid and vapor phases. It was shown that the mass flux of water was negligible compared with that of ammonia except the region near the liquid inlet. Ammonia absorption rate increases rapidly near the liquid inlet and decrease slowly. Both the absorption rate of ammonia vapor and the desorption rate of water near the liquid inlet increase as the vapor mass flow rate increases, but the mass fluxes of the ammonia and the water near the liquid outlet decrease as the mass flow rate of the vapor increases.

  • Analysis of two-dimensional flow in an involute gear pump has been done by using FLUENT. Analysis extended to the turbulent flow includes the mass flow rate with functions of pressure difference between inlet and outlet, rotational velocities of involute gear, and clearances between tip of gear and housing. In general mass flow rate decreases with decreasing rotational velocity, and with increasing clearance and pressure difference. The flow rate efficiency of gear pump, which is defined with the theoretical flow rate, has been presented in terms of the above parameters.

  • This study result is obtained by flow analysis according to opening and shutting angle of ball valve. As opening and shutting angle becomes larger, vortex flow becomes smaller and flow rate becomes increased. And the pressure drop is shown to be smaller at the inlet and outlet of ball. As this angle becomes larger, mass flow rate becomes increased. Its rate becomes increased abruptly in case of opening and shutting angle at more than $60^{\circ}$.This analysis result can be applied usefully with no leak at pipe system field by the optimum control of mass flow rate according to opening and shutting of ball valve.

  • The characteristics of micro gaseous flows in microchannels have been analyzed in view of flow resistance using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method which is a molecule-based numerical modeling technique. For this purpose, a DSMC code where the pressure boundary condition was specified at the inlet and outlet, has been developed and the results of simulations showed satisfactory agreements with the analytic solution in the slip flow regime. (0.01 < Kn < 0.1) By varying the height and length of the microchannel, the effect of pressure difference between the inlet and outlet was examined. The present computation indicates that the curvature in pressure distribution along the channel increases due to the effect of compressibility when the pressure difference increases. To obtain the flow resistance regardless of the channel dimensions, a standard curve is devised in the present study by introducing the concept of unit mass flowrate and unit driving pressure force. From this curve, it is shown that in micro flows, a significant deviation from the laminar incompressible flow occurs by reducing the flow resistance.

  • General polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) operates at less than $80^{\circ}C$. Therefore liquid phase water resulting from electrochemical reaction accumulates and floods the cell which in turn increases the mass transfer loss. To prevent the flooding, it is common to employ serpentine flow channel, which can efficiently export liquid phase water to the outlet. The major drawback of utilizing serpentine flow channel is the large pressure drop that happens between the inlet and outlet. On the other hand, in the high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEMFC), since the operating temperature is 130 to $180^{\circ}C$, the generated water is in the state of gas, so the flooding phenomenon is not taken into consideration. In HT-PEMFCs parallel flow channel with lower pressure drop between the inlet and outlet is employed therefore, in order to circulate hydrogen and air in the cell less pumping power is required. In this study we analyzed HT-PEMFC's different flow channels by parallel computation using previously developed 3-D isothermal model. All the flow channels had an active area of $25cm^2$. Also, we numerically compared the performance of HT-PEMFC parallel flow channel with different manifold area and Rib interval against the original serpentine flow channel. Results of the analysis are shown in the form of three-dimensional contour polarization curves, flow characteristics in the channel, current density distribution in the Membrane, overpotential distribution in the catalyst layer, and hydrogen and oxygen concentration distribution. As a result, the performance of a real area fuel cell was predicted.

  • An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is an industrial post processing facility for high efficiency dust mitigation. Uniformity of the flow passing through the inlet duct leading into the main chamber is important for efficient reduction of dust. To examine flow uniformity, this study conducted a numerical analysis of the flow within a scale-down ESP inlet duct. Magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) results from a prior study were utilized to validate the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) numerical simulations. Both the experimental and computational results displayed a similar recirculation zone shape and normalized velocity profile near the duct outlet for the baseline geometry. To optimize the uniformity of the flow, the number of guide vanes was modified, and the guide vanes were partially extended straight upward. Design evaluation is done based on the outlet velocity distribution and mass flowrate balance between the two outlets. Simulation results indicate that the vane extension is critical for flow optimization in curved ESP ducts.

  • In this study, a parametric study on a cavity as casing treatment of a centrifugal compressor has been conducted using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model. Two kinds of cavity were applied at choke and surge conditions, respectively, in this work. Inlet and outlet port widths, angle of outlet port, and length of cavity were chosen as the geometric parameters and investigated to find their effects on the aerodynamic performances such as adiabatic efficiency at design mass flow rate and stall margin of the centrifugal compressor. It was found that the aerodynamic performances of the centrifugal compressor were affected considerably by the four geometric parameters. The adiabatic efficiency was hardly changed by the geometric parameters, excepts for the angle of outlet port. With an increase in the angle of outlet port, the adiabatic efficiency and the stall margin decreased. The stall margin was more sensitive to the outlet port width than to the other geometric parameters. And, with a decrease in the outlet port width, the stall margin increased by 2% compared to that of the reference.

  • Bypass anastomosis are frequently adopted for surgical treatments. After the bypass grafting, the bypass artery is often occluded due to restenosis and/or anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia phenomena. Optimal coronary bypass anastomosis should be investigated to improve the patency for the arterial bypass techniques. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of bypass with sequential bypass effects in the stenosed coronary artery. Numerical analyses are focused on the understanding of the flow patterns for different sequential anastomosis techniques. Blood flow field is treated as two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow. The finite volume method is adopted for discretization of the governing equations. The Carreau model is employed as the constitutive equation for blood. To find the optimal sequential bypass anastomotic configurations, the mass flow rates at the outlet of different models are compared quantitatively.

  • This study have goal with reverse engineering for petrochemistry of high pressure ball valve for localization. Ball valve for development accomplished with flow analysis based on provision of ANSI B16.34, ANSI B16.10, ANSI B16.25 In order to localize the petrochemistry high pressure control valve. Numerical simulation using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) in order to predict a mass flow rate and a flow coefficient form flow dynamic point of view. The working fluid assumed the water($H_2O$). The valve inlet and outlet setup a pressure boundary condition. The outlet pressure was fixed by atmospheric pressure and calculated inlet velocity 5m/s. CFD solver used STAR-CCM+ which is commercial code. The result shows change of mass flow rate according to opening and closing angle of valve. Flow decrease observed open valve that equal percentage flow paten which is general inclination of ball valve. The structural analysis used ANSYS which is a commercial code. Stress analysis result of internal pressure in valve showed lower than yield strength. This is expect to need more detail design and verification for stem and seat structure.

  • This study was performed to get the optimal operating conditions of an water-air compact heat pump system using R-134a. The experiments was done for three elvels of the air mass flow rate and the compressor driving speed during air-heating process. The temperature of the air at the condenser inlet and outlet was 17~23$^{\circ}C$, 36~44$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average temperature of the refrigerant at the evaporator and condenser was 1$0^{\circ}C$, 6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The temperature of the refrigerant was not depending on the air mass flow rate and the compressor driving speed. The pressure of the refrigerant at the condenser inlet and outlet was ranged of 10~18.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and that at the evaporator was ranged of 3.1~3.3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The pressure drop at the condenser and evaporator was about 1.5, 1.2 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The performance of coefficient for air heating was about 3.3~4.0.
