Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.

The mathematical analysis of the outflow hydrograph resulting from earth dam-break was studied. DBFW(Dam Break Flood Wave) model based on the breach mechanism and reservoir storage equation was developed and was applied to the Teton and Buffalo-Creek dam. The modeling results showed that the shape of outflow hydrograph, peak discharge and failure duration time had a good agreement with the data analyzed by NWS. The breach mechanisms which exert influence on the outflow hydrograph were consisted of geomorphological characteristics of the reservoir, breach mode, breach width and failure duration time. The earth dams in Korea were classified into four types by the reservoir geomorphology, and water surface elevation-failure duration time-peak discharge relationships were also presented. The methodological procedure made in this paper will provide a basic contribution to dam-break study in river system.
This work is for examining a simplified equation based on the rational formula, which can easily decide storm-water detention volume in small urban catchments. The storm-water detention volume is determined by the inflow hydrograph flowing to detention basin and the outflow hydrograph discharged from the detention basin. The ratio of average outflow over the period of rainfall duration against allowable discharge was 0.5 in former simplified equation. But this research has found that the average outflow ratio depends on the storage methodology. In the case of the on-line storage method, the average outflow ratio is a function of the time of concentration of the catchments and rainfall duration, which ranged from 0.5~1.0. In the case of the off-line storage method, the average ratio is a function of peak discharge and allowable discharge except above time of concentration and rainfall duration, where its function value ranged from 1.0~2.0. When applying this equation to small catchment in Mokpo city, South Korea, we could easily calculate the relation curve between the storm-water detention volume and allowable discharge.

In many reservoir projects, economic considerations will necessitate a design utilizing surcharge. Determination of the most economical combination of surcharge and spillway capacity for a given spillway crest level will require flood routing studies and economic studies of the dam-reservoir-spillway combinations. Many methods of actual flood routing have been devised, each of them with its advantages and disadvantages. Some of these methods are listed below: (1) Arithmetical trial-and-error method. (2) Modified Puls' method (3) Cheng's graphical method (4) Horton's arithmetical method (5) Ekadahl's arithmetical method (6) Digital computer programming. For the purpose of preliminary design and cost estimating of dams and spillways, it is often required to estimate, for a given design flood and spillway crest level. the approximate values of two among the three characteristics of the spillway spillway length, maximum discharge and surcharge depth at maximum discharge, when one of these quantities is given. As is well known, the outflow hydrograph for an ungated overflow spillway assumes the form of a wave-shaped curve with a minimum point for Q=o At zero time and a maximum point for Q=Qmax at its intersection with the falling leg of the inflow hydrograph (see Fig. 4) The shaded area between the inflow and outflow hydrographs represents at the approximate scale the temporary retention Vt. In line with the remarks, draw by free hand the assumed outflow hydrograph with its maximum point for the given Qmax (see Fig. 4) and by planimetration find Vt. From the reservoir capacity curve (Fig. 3) find Vs for the given spillway crest level and make V=Vs+Vt. From the above curve find surcharge water elevation for V and surcharge depth Hmax over spillway crest. From the discharge formula compute {{{{L= { Q} over { { CH}^{3/2 } } }}}} The methed provides a means for a quick and fairly accurate estimation of spillway capacity.

It is necessary to estimate the groundwater recharge rate properly to predict the demand of groundwater and to establish the plan for the development of groundwater in the future. In this paper, A small basin in Chojung area is selected to calculate the groundwater recharge rate. In the calculation, water balance analysis, SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method. groundwater-level analysis and hydrograph of outflow analysis are applied to this area. Data of precipitation measured by Chungju climatological station for about 10 years are used for water balance analysis and SCS-CN method. For the groundwater-level analysis. variations of groundwater-level measured from the 3 test wells in 1997's are used and stage-discharge rating curves in this area for 3 years are used for the hydrograph of outflow. The recharge rate calculated by water balance is 19%, 12.95% by SCS-CN method. 16.51% by groundwater-level analysis and 10.9% by hydrograph of outflow analysis and the overall average recharge rate is about 14.84%.
A series of numerical experiments is performed to compare the characteristics of outflow hydrograph using linear and nonlinear Muskingum-Cunge methods for two cases: (a) sinusoidal inflow hydrographs and (b) rainfall inputs. The nonlinear method shows the steepening of the rising limb, coupled with a corresponding flattening of the receding limb. The linear method conserves mass exactly. In contrast, the nonlinear method is subject to a gain and a loss of mass. The loss of mass and the subsidence of peak outflow increases with a mild slope, a small baseflow $q_b$ and a large peak inflow to baseflow ratio $q_p/q_b$. A shock wave and associated numerical instability results in the increase of mass for a steep slope and a large $q_p/q_b$ ratio. While the linear method depends on the reference flow per unit-width, the nonlinear method depends on a baseflow and the $q_p/q_b$ ratio. It is found that, unlike for the sinusoidal inflow, the outflow for the rainfall inputs conserves mass fairly exactly in the nonlinear method.

Rapid changes of urban hydrologic events need new management operation rule of detention reservoir which is essential outflow control system in urban area. Therefore, this study is to develop the outflow management method of Seoul city considering the Han river flood characteristics, to analyze the inundation of detention reservoir according to variation of design storm patterns, and to examine the safety of gate due to design flood water level. From this study, new operation rule is presented. The design storm patterns are determined by instantaneous intensity method and Huff's quartile method. And the inflow hydrograph of detention reservoir is obtained by applying ILLUDAS model and RRL method. The operation rule of existing drainage pump is designed to have linear relation between storage and pumping discharge. But in this study, it is effective for preventing inundation when the operation rule of drainage pump have Gaussian function which is combined the storage of detention reservoir with its inflow according to increasing or decreasing of inflow hydrograph.
The Nakdong Estuary Barrage is a tidal river environment where freshwater and seawater meet. This requires systematic monitoring of both surface water discharged from the estuary barrage and submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, upstream hydrograph and water balance analysis were used to calculate the change in water storage and discharge of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage. Submarine groundwater discharge was also calculated based on remote sensing-based digital elevation model data and hydrological modeling data, and compared with the estimated surface water discharge for analysis. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to water resource management by utilizing remote sensing-based altimeter data other than field measurement. Because submarine groundwater discharge plays a significant role on the coastal environment as well as surface water discharge from an estuary barrage, studies on groundwatersurface water interactions in a river estuary should be sufficiently considered in monitoring the ecosystem of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage.
The Snyder's Unit Hydrograph Method is applied to simulate the November 1985 Flood of the Cheat River Basin, which is located in the North-East region of West Virginia in United States. The entire basin is divided into many subareas according to the hydrologic and geologic characteristics. The overland flows are computed on each subarea and combined together along the streams. The flows are also routed by the Normal Depth Storage and Outflow Method in Modified Pulse option. The several structural flood control alternatives are examined. The study shows the OPTION III which has the three moderately sized dam is ultimately suitable to control the flood. The HEC-1 computer model is used to analyze the flood.
