For the last years, it has become hot issue such as disposal of the treated wastewater, which caused by increment of a population and industrial development at the coastal areas. The ocean outfall system discharges primary or secondary treated effluent into coastline or at the deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the see, surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding salt water and becomes very dilute. This paper deals ocean outfall design which effects to decision-making about marine environment management and wastewater treatment. In order to make predictions of dilution of discharged water and the trajectory of a plume, CORMIX has been used considering several elements including a seasonal and tidal changes. These solutions are strung together to provide basic data and general drawings for effective management of outfall.
As a large scale port development in coastal waters proceeds step by step and populations in the vicinity of port are getting increased, the issue on 'how to dispose the treated municipal water and wastewater in harbor' brings peoples' concern. The submarine outfall system discharges the primary or secondary treated effluent at the coastline or in deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding sea water and becomes very dilute. We intended in this paper to investigate the impact on dilution of effluent and the behavior of flume under the conditions of the seasonal and spatial temperature variations, which have not been noticeable in designing effective marine outfall system. To predict and analyze the behaviour and dilution characteristics of plume not just with the effluent temperature, but also with the seasonal variation of temperature of surround water, CORMIX( Cornell Mixing Zone Expert System)-GI have been applied. The results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of discharged water. We hope to help for the effective operation of outfall system, probable outfall design, protection of water quality, and warm water discharges from a power plant, etc.
Marine outfalls are used to discharge treated liquid effluents to the environment. An efficiently designed, constructed and operated marine outfall effectively dilutes the discharged effluent, thereby reducing the risk to biota and humans dependent upon the marine environment. In this study, we investigated the effluent transport from a marine outfall at different depths in Masan Bay. A particle-tracking model was used to predict the dispersion of effluent. The model results indicate that some particles released from a depth of 13 m move to the inner area of Masan Bay within 48 h. As the release depth increases after 48 h, the particles move further southward. This suggests that effluent from the outer area of Masan Bay can affect the inner area, and that this effect can be reduced by increasing the depth of effluent release.

To improve the water quality, particularly for sea bathers, the behaviour of wastewater from sewage outfalls in water adjacent to Swansea, UK, was studied using a mathematical model. The water quality in the sewage receiving basin was determined using factors like the outfall diffuser location(distance from land boundary), sewage treatment scheme, discharge time, and bacteria decay rate, etc. With respect to these factors, an optimal strategy for sewage discharge was then investigated to minimize bacteria levels along the bathing beaches. As water quality criteria, predicted faecal coliform levels were monitored along the coast adjacent to the outfall locations. The resultant values were compared with EC Mandatory(<2000, 95 % of 20 samples) and Guideline Standards(< 100, 80 % of 20 samples). For the advective-diffusion equation, the non linear advective terms were represented using the ULTIMATE algorithm and the third-order accurate QUICKEST scheme to avoid numerical diffusion. Details of the simulation results are then presented as an optimal policy for sewage discharge in the region.

The hybrid model can be used to predict the initial near field mixing and the far field transport of the buoyant jets, which are discharged from the submerged wastewater ocean outfall. In the near field, the jet integral model can be used for single port diffusers while the ${\sigma}$ transformed particle tracking model was used in the far field. In this study, the experimental study was performed to verify the developed hybrid model in the previous research. The developed hybrid model properly predict the surface and vertical concentration distribution of the single buoyant jets with various effluent and ambient conditions. The hybrid model can also simulate the surface concentration distribution of the rosette diffuser except for the parallel diffuser with the higher densimetric Froude number due to the assumption that dynamic effects of the effluent plumes are negligible in the far field. The application of the hybrid model to rosette diffusers can predict the concentration near the diffuser more accurately when the line-plume approximation is used.

The numerous investments have been introduced to design and assess mixing zone characteristics of wastewater discharges to the ocean. Specially It strive to meet water quality standard for persistent and bio-accumulative chemical contaminants at the point of discharge through continual improvement pollution prevention measures and other voluntary measures in the developed country. The goals that of this paper are to emphasize the regulatory mixing zone is defined as an allocated impact zone where the numeric water quality criteria may be exceeded as long as acutely toxic conditions are prevent. Furthermore, mixing zones be limited to an area or volume as small as practicable that with not interfere with the designated uses or the established community of aquatic life in the segment for which the uses are designated and the shape be a simple configuration that is easy to locate in the body of water and avoids impingement on biologically important areas and the shore hugging plumes should be avoided This results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of a discharge and only in conjunction with information from the effective marine outfall design as well as for the sound harbour design. Thus the numerical investigation using CORMIX has been performed to show the regulatory mixing zone in the near and far field of the marine outfall.

There has been a growing interest in the elimination of anoxic layer in the Youngsan River Estuarybecause the anoxic water mass caused mainly by the inflow of fresh water from the sea wall might cause the mass reduction of benthos during summer. An ocean outfall system to discharge treated wastewater into sea water may be used as one of the effective and economical ways to eliminate the anoxic layer. The suitable ocean outfall design is generally proposed for the prediction of the buoyant jet behavior in the near field. The parameters including CTD and current data are taken into account f3r more reliable buoyant jet behavior calculation. One of the numerical models, CORMIX 1, approved by EPA is used herein for the prediction of the trajectorial variation of the cross-sectional salinity and DO concentration distribution on the calculated buoyant jet boundary according to the tidal periods. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that the single port outfall is a useful system to eliminate the anoxic layer. Proper strategies are also proposed for achieving desirable ambient conditions.

The temporal variability in near-field mixing characteristics of discharging plumes in oceanic environment was investigated using the time series data of the buoyant jet parameters. Based on the currents and density profiles observed in Masan outfall site and effluent discharge flowrates for 63days of summer season, the temporal variabilities and those occurrence frequency were obtained by line plume equations. The results show that wide range of variability in Masan outfall's mixing characteristics was found due to the temporal changes of effluent flowrates and ambient oceanic conditions. The near-field dilution was in the range of 30~71 with the averaged dilution of 34, which was a good agreement with field measurements of salinity deficit. The length of mixing zone was in the range of 5.4~36.2 m with the average of 9.5 m, and the plume rise height was in the range of 8.1~10.2 m with the average of 8.9 m. However, only the 30~44% of the whole results are higher than the averages, which indicates the necessity of this frequency analysis with the continuously measured data for designing and managing the ocean outfall system.
In a highly urbanized area, land availability is limited for the installation of space consuming stormwater systems for best management practices (BMPs), leading to the consideration of underground stormwater treatment devices connected to the stormwater pipe system. The configuration of a stormwater pipe network determines the hydrological and pollutant transport characteristics of the stormwater discharged through the pipe network, and thus should be an important design consideration for effective management of stormwater quantity and quality. This article presents a multi-objective optimization approach for designing a stormwater pipe network with on-line stormwater treatment devices to achieve an optimal trade-off between the total installation cost and the annual removal efficiency of total suspended solids (TSS). The Non-dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was adapted to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The study site used to demonstrate the developed approach was a commercial area that has an existing pipe network with eight outfalls into an adjacent stream in Yongin City, South Korea. The stormwater management model (SWMM) was calibrated based on the data obtained from a subcatchment within the study area and was further used to simulate the flow rates and TSS discharge rates through a given pipe network for the entire study area. In the simulation, an underground stormwater treatment device was assumed to be installed at each outfall and sized proportional to the average flow rate at the outfall. The total installation cost for the pipes and underground devices was estimated based on empirical formulas using the flow rates and TSS discharge rates simulated by the SWMM. In the demonstration example, the installation cost could be reduced by up to 9% while the annual TSS removal efficiency could be increased by 4% compared to the original pipe network configuration. The annual TSS removal efficiency was relatively insensitive to the total installation cost in the Pareto-optimal solutions of the pipe network design. The results suggested that the installation cost of the pipes and stormwater treatment devices can be substantially reduced without significantly compromising the pollutant removal efficiency when the pipe network is optimally designed.
The depth of sewers in residential complexes was determined to prevent the separated sewers from misconnection between storm sewer and sanitary sewer, and from the submersion of the basement by minimizing the phenomenon of backwater when it rains. In residential complexes, main causes of the submersion were the misconnection of sewers, rising of the backwater level at outfall in sewer system, poor maintenance of sewers, and lacking in their cross section. Minimum depth of sewers should be over 1.2~1.5m. According to the economic analysis, the depth of 1.5m~3.0m was appropriate for minimizing the submersion of basements and for making the disposal of domestic wastewater more easily.
