  • Numerical solutions for two-dimensional, steady, free convection are presented for a cylinder filled with saturated porous media. An annulus is bounded by inner wall with constant heat flux and two adiabatic horizontal walls with outer wall isothermally cooled. Governing equations are numerically solved for the range of Aspect Ratio 1 to 20, Radius Ratio, 1 to 20, and Rayleigh number, 50 to $10^4$ by Finite Difference method utilizing upwind scheme. Results are presented in terms of stream lines and isotherms, temperature distributions and local Nusselt numbers at the heated wall. Average Nusselt numbers are also presented for the comparisons.

  • We developed laminated cylindrical scaffolds composed of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) and keratin, and investigated their potential for tissue engineering and disk regeneration. The scaffold was designed to have two parts, i.e. inner cylinder and outer disk, to mimic a natural disk. The outer disk was composed of PLGA and the inner cylinder was prepared using PLGA film or PLGA/keratin hybrid film. In this study, we investigated the effects of keratin on the growth and proliferation of annulus fibrous(AF) cells in the cylindrical scaffolds. Scaffolds containing PLGA/keratin films showed a significantly higher cell proliferation and expression of collagen I and II than the counterpart with PLGA films. Keratin containing scaffolds also exhibited an excellent mechanical strength, demonstrating that keratin influences the proliferation of annulus fibrous cells. The results provide valuable information on PLGA/keratin films for tissue engineered disk regeneration.

  • The objective of this study is ensuring safety of cabin when the blade impacts into a obstacle by verifying safety of the rotor mast and the transmission using impact loads calculated from the simulation. The rotor mast shall not fail and the transmission shall not be displaced into occupiable space when the main rotor composite blade impact into a 8 inch rigid cylinder in diameter on the outer 10% of the blade at operational rotor speed. To calculate the reaction loads at the spherical bearing and lead-lag damper, blade impact analysis was performed with FE model consist of composite blade, tree(or rigid cylinder) using elastic-plastic with damage material and several contact surfaces which were created to describe a progress of actual failure. Also, the reaction loads were investigated in change of blade rotation speed and pitch angle.

  • Turbulent Couette flow between coaxial cylinders with inner one rotating has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The radius ratio of the coaxial cylinders is 0.43. Mean velocity and turbulent stresses have been measured by hot-wire anemometer in the range of Reynolds number based on the velocity at rotating wall and the radial distance between walls, 60,900-187,000. For the numerical computation, the Reynolds stress model has been used as a turbulence closure model. Measurements of mean velocity show that the velocity profile of wall layer largely deviates from universal logarithmic law due to the effect of streamline curvature, especially in the region near the stationary outer cylinder. The results computed with the Reynolds stress model agree well with the experimental data in the prediction of circumferential intensity of turbulent fluctuations. However, the computed level of radial intensity is much higher than the measurement. Curvature-corrected versions of the Reynolds stress model improves the prediction of turbulent intensities, but the results are not fully satisfactory.

  • This study investigated the flow characteristics in an annular flume with a free water surface using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter(ADV) in the laboratory. The flow was driven by the rotation of the inner cylinder in a way designed not to interfere with flocculation of cohesive sediments. The effect of the inner cylinder for the longitudinal velocities showed highest near the moving boundary and decreased towards the outer wall. At the lower longitudinal velocity, there was a peak in turbulent kinetic energy near the bed, whereas it moved upward to with increasing of the velocity. The longitudinal velocities estimated using the power law were in good agreement with the measured values than the values predicted by the log-law with roughness lengths. The average friction velocities evaluated by Reynolds shear stress were smaller than the values calculated using the log-law and power law when increasing the longitudinal velocity.

  • The clamping characteristics of segmented nuts in pyrotechnic separation nut are investigated using finite element analysis. When the segmented nuts are used to clamp objects, a constraint cylinder is necessary to prevent the segmented nuts from spreading out to the radial direction. During the manufacturing process, a clearance is usually introduced between the outer diameter of the segmented nuts and the inner diameter of the constraint cylinder. Therefore to find out the effect of the clearance, proper finite element modeling method is suggested to describe the clamping procedure appropriately. In addition, finite element analysis with the clearance of 0.00, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.10 mm are performed. From the analysis results, the clamping characteristics of segmented nuts are investigated according to the clearance, and several factors which should be considered to design a reliable pyrotechnic separation nut are figured out.

  • The design and the construction are carried out by installation of new caissons on the back or the front of existing caissons to increase the stability of existing caisson breakwater. In this study, we use the eigenfunction expansion method to analyze the effects of wave structure interaction when new porous dual circular caissons are installed on the back or the front of existing breakwater. The porous dual circular caisson which consisting of a porous outer cylinder circumscribing an impermeable inner cylinder is one type of seawater exchanging breakwater. The comparison of numerical results between present method and Sankarbabu et al. is made, and the wave force and the wave run-up acting on each porous dual circular caisson are calculated for various parameters by considering the wave structure interaction.

  • Today, if you don't reflect trends in developing new content crafts, you can't succeed in marketing. This is because the trend is the driving force that leads to the needs of consumers that come and go temporarily. The current market is changing and wants new lifestyle trends. As a trend of such latent desire, the purpose is to develop high-value-added interior vases using rice cake patterns and ceramic complexes. In the manufacturing method, the first rice cake patterns writing tool is stamped at a different angle from the top of the toremi board (a new term created above) written in the process of the pot work. A cylinder is made of a second potter's wheel, and after the outer wall is double-flavored, the cylinder is quickly rotated to be extended by pushing it from inside to outside by hand. The purpose of this vase is to develop a decorative vase with high added value by experimenting with various geometric patterns that are dismantled vertically and horizontally at a high speed with the static rice cake pattern stamped on the third, and then utilizing the various rice cake patterns developed in this way as the shape of a jar.

  • This study aims to develop knee protectors that provide high safety and fitness, while incorporating a motion-adaptable 3D-printed pad. These protectors were evaluated by individuals who experience knee discomfort or pain. The results are as follows. First, the 3Dprinted pad design of a hexagonal mesh structure, which is modeled for excellent appearance and knee movement. Each unit of the mesh has a outer layer of 2mm thick, a spacer layer of 1 mm in diameter, and is connected by a 1.5 mm bridge. The bridge was extended up to 1.2 cm. Second, the knee brace was designed in three types - cylinder, strap, and combination by Universal design. Impact protection measurements of the three knee protectors demonstrated roughly 80% reduction in impact. Third, based on usability evaluation, cylinder type protectors have the highest ratings in most areas, primarily because of their ease of use. The strap type protector received positive reviews in terms of appearance and care, and the combination type provided stable knee protection. This study demonstrated the potential industrial application of 3D printing technology by designing and evaluating protective products for the human body. The results of this study are expected to aid knee protector manufacturers in developing practical products and promoting the development of protective equipment for other body parts or purposes.

  • The aim of this study is to find the change in trend in the eccentricities of two journal bearings supporting the crankshaft of a single cylinder engine and the degree of misalignment of the shaft. We analyze the change in oil film thickness considering the wear scar under mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime at potential wear regions. For this, we first calculate the central eccentricities of the two journal bearings by using the mobility method. Then we calculate the outer end eccentricity by using the geometry of the bearings. Further, the tilting angle and degree of misalignment of the shaft are calculated by using the eccentricities of the two bearings. We show that the eccentricity of bearing #1, on which higher load is applied, increases at the beginning of the start-up cycle and during the coast-down cycle. However, the eccentricity of bearing #2, on which lower load is applied, decreases at the beginning of the start-up cycle and increases during the coast-down cycle. From the results of the analysis of oil film thickness, we show that the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime for a misaligned shaft is at the initial stages of the start-up cycle for both bearing #1 and #2 and at the final stage of the coast-down cycle for only bearing #1.
