Smart Outdoor Cultivation System using LoRa (LoRa를 이용한 노지 작물 관리 시스템)

  • In this paper, we show the case of establishing a outdoor production system using the Internet of things and define the environmental variables in the outdoor production system. By measuring soil temperature, water content, electrical conductivity and acidity through sensors, LoRa communication module transmits the information to the outdoor production system. The outdoor production system controls the amount of fertilizer and the volume of water based on this sensor data. We have developed a system that manages a wide range of crops using LoRa technology, which is a suitable communication method for cultivating crops, and manages production volume and sales performance.

Growth and salting properties influenced by culture methods, cultivars and storage packaging of kimchi cabbage (Brassica rapa) in spring

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of the pre- and post-harvest variable factors on the processed product of kimchi cabbage. Two kimchi cabbage cultivars, namely 'Chungwang' and 'Dongpung,' were grown in a field and under a plastic greenhouse condition and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ after harvesting with and without low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film packaging. Growths were determined after harvesting while salting characteristics were determined after the processing and storage. The results show that the height, weight and leaf thickness were higher in kimchi cabbages grown in the greenhouse than those grown in the field. The plastic house culture increased the kimchi cabbage growth of the head weight, head height and leaf thickness compared with that of the open field culture. However, the osmolality and firmness were higher in the outdoor cultivated kimchi cabbages. Kimchi cabbage packed in film covered sacks and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ showed lower weight loss than unpacked cabbages during storage. Salt concentration and pH were also affected by the different pre- and post-harvest factors after salting the kimchi cabbages. Salt concentrations of the kimchi cabbage were influenced by various factors such as the cultivars, cultivation methods and storage covering. Though the present findings showed a limited difference in salt concentration and pH between the cultivars of kimchi cabbages, this study suggests that there is a relationship between processed agricultural products and their pre- and post-harvest methods.

Studies on Management of Effective Temperature and Humidity in Greenhouse at Summer Season (하절기 효율적인 하우스 온도 습도 관리에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to effective temperature and humidity management for normal growth of crops in protected cultivation during the summer season. Because the highest temperature of vinyl house inhibit normal growth of crop and decrease of crop production or marketability in summer season. Finally, the vinyl house was impossible some crop cultivation in summer season. This study was conducted to investigate effective and economic method for temperature drop in protected cultivation during the summer season. 1. In medium size vinyl house(5$\times$13$\times$3m), the effect of temperature drop appeared the highest in treatment of shading with aluminium thermal curtain+fog system+ventilation with fan. The effect of temperature drop was about 1$0^{\circ}C$ lower than outer air temperature and about 4$^{\circ}C$ lower than outer soil temperature. 2. The effect of temperature drop according to shading with aluminium thermal curtain+fog system+ventilation with fan during the highest temperature of summer season Jul., 20 to Aug., 21 was appeared about 8$^{\circ}C$ lower than outdoor above ground(1.2m) and about 7$^{\circ}C$ lower than outdoor surface ground. 3. The changes of solar radiation during a day according to shading with aluminium thermal curtain+ventilation with fan and shading with black curtain+ventilation with fan treatments was appeared respectively about 29.3%, 32.5% of outdoor solar radiation a fine day and respectively about 27.4%, 31.8% of outdoor solar radiation a cloudy day.

Utilization of Electron Beam-Radiated Cotton Waste for Agaric Mushroom Cultivation Bed (전자빔으로 처리한 폐면의 버섯배지효과)

  • Cotton waste is usually used for cultivating agaric mushroom after outdoor fermentation for a few months. Electron beam was used to break down the polymer chaims of cotton waste for increasing low molecular weight soluble sugars, which may enhance the agaric mushroom cultivation. By increasing electron beam radiation, alpha cellulose content of the cotton waste was decreased while beta cellulose content and hot water solubles were increased. Electron beam radiation over 240 kGy on cotton waste caused significant increase of mushroom yield without lowering mushroom quality.

  • Recently, as research on smart farms has been actively conducted, indoor environment control, such as a green house, has reached a high level. However, In the field of forestry where cultivation is carried out in outdoor, the use of ICT is still insufficient. In this paper, we propose LPWA-based forest growth environment collection and big data analysis system using ICT technology. The proposed system collects and transmits the field cultivation environment data to the server using small solar power generation and LPWA technology based on the oneM2M architecture. The transmitted data is constructed as big data on the server and utilizes it to predict the production and quality of forest products. The proposed system is expected to contribute to the production of low-cost, high-quality crops through the fusion of renewable energy and smart farms. In addition, it can be applied to other industrial fields that utilize the oneM2M architecture and monitoring the growth environment of agricultural crops in the field.

  • Present experiments were conducted to determine the possibility of cultivation of tropical and subtropical saprophytic fungus, Volvariella volvacea (Bull. ex Fr.) Sing. under Korean climatic conditions and the-possibility of applying the method of indoor cultivation which was modified from the cultivation method of the common mushroom, Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Sing.. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In conventional outdoor cultivation, the adequate cultivation period of this fungus was from around the end of June to the end of August. 2. When rice straws submerged in water for 5 days were peak-heated for 6 days in a mush room house, the yield of the fungus was higher than that obtained from the rice straws peak-heated immediately after outdoor composting. 3. The highest yield, 20.49kg per 100kg rice straws, was obtained from the water-soaked and peak-heated rice straws which were cased with a 2 cm layer of loam at 7 days after spawning.

Red Pepper Drying with Solar Energy in Greenhouse (온실을 이용한 홍고추의 건조)

  • This study was initially performed to investigate current red-pepper drying methods commonly being adopted on red-pepper cultivation farm area. Based on the informations obtained from the field survey, an experiment of red-pepper drying was carried out to verify the actual drying potential of plastic covered solar house similar to the conventional pipe frame greenhouses covered with one or two layer of plastic film. Some results obtained from field survey and drying experiment for red-pepper are summarized as follows; 1. Various patterns of red-pepper drying process were found; 1) complete natural drying with red-pepper exposed in outdoor air, 2) hot air drying by dry chamber only, 3) combination drying by hot air dryer together with plastic covered passive solar house, 4) drying with plastic covered solar house unit. 2. The average air temperatures of outdoor and solar house during drying experiment period were $26.9-30.8\;and\;28.6-33.8^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the maximum air temperatures of those two were $34.2-36.4\;and\;39.8\;-52.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Horizontal solar intensity during experiment period was $18.49-23.96\;MJ/m^{2}$, and relative humidity of outdoor and experimental solar house were 56 - 66% and 64 - 70%, respectively. 3. The weight of red-pepper during drying experiment period was decreased almost linearly from initial moisture content of 85% to final moisture content of 14%.

  • As quality of life improves recently, people began to pay more attention to outdoor environment and outdoor activities. In case of the U.S.A., community garden is utilized as space for plant cultivation and horticulture activities and the space is also used for complex activities such as education, play, leisure and rest. At the same time, such diverse activities are linked with creating social and economic wealth, thus creating sustainable values in the community. This study targets to identify the social and economic effects of community garden. For this purpose, the study analyzes the detailed cases of community gardens in the U.S. and analyzed the contents of the study based on the theory of social capital. In case of Korea, community gardens are operated in the form of urbane farming and parks in most cases but it is desirable in terms of contribution to the community and sustainability to manage the community gardens with space characteristics and programs that set up communities by gathering many residents in the community. It is necessary to approach the matter of community garden comprehensively and to set up comprehensive and complex plans to form community gardens. This study is expected to function as an important base for such purpose.

  • An open pond type photobioreactor for mass cultivation of S. platensis was designed and the growth parameters from different cultivation processes were compared. 0.30(1/day) of specific growth rate and 1.69(g/$\ell$) of maximum cell density were obtained from batch cultivation. In fed-batch cultivation, specific growth rate and maximum cell density were estimated as 0.22(1/day) and 1.75(g/$\ell$), respectively. Maximum biomass productively from continuous cultivation was obtained as 0.44 (g/$\ell$/day). It proves that an outdoors-mass cultivation of S. platensis considering optimal environmental condition is economically feasible. In addition, the biomass productivity was studied in two different mixing systems such as agitation and air sparging methods. The biomass productivity by an agitation method was better than that in an air sparging method.

  • The purpose of the cultivated crops have been changes in the aim of improving quality production. In recent years, as people's attention on health, the demand for healthy crops such as mushrooms gradually increased. In the process of mushroom factory production, regulation of environmental factors directly affects the yield and quality of mushroom. In related to the methods of mushroom cultivation, the recent technologies apply the new technology such as sensors and IT convergence services. And then cultivating mushroom is managed effectively. Farmers use plastic greenhouse cultivation mode more and more in order to reduce the impact of outdoor environment on crop cultivation, which requires farmers to adjust the greenhouse temperature at any time. But the majority of farmers still use a thermometer to measure temperature. This paper constructs an environment that can automatically adjust the temperature, so as to measuring temperature in real time, improving the efficiency of the farm work, and reducing unnecessary labor.
