The problem of laterally loaded piles is particularly a complex soil-structure interaction problem. The flexural stresses developed due to the combined action of axial load and bending moment must be evaluated in a realistic and rational manner for safe and economical design of pile foundation. The paper reports the finite element analysis of pile groups. For this purpose simplified models along the lines similar to that suggested by Desai et al. (1981) are used for idealizing various elements of the foundation system. The pile is idealized one dimensional beam element, pile cap as two dimensional plate element and the soil as independent closely spaced linearly elastic springs. The analysis takes into consideration the effect of interaction between pile cap and soil underlying it. The pile group is considered to have been embedded in cohesive soil. The parametric study is carried out to examine the effect of pile spacing, pile diameter, number of piles and arrangement of pile on the responses of pile group. The responses considered include the displacement at top of pile group and bending moment in piles. The results obtained using the simplified approach of the F.E. analysis are further compared with the results of the complete 3-D F.E. analysis published earlier and fair agreement is observed in the either result.
In order to analyze the effect of the cyclic lateral loading on the response of a pile-soil system, a full-scale single steel pile was subjected to one-way cyclic loading. The test pile was driven into a bi-layered soil consisting of a normally consolidated saturated clay overlying a silty sandy layer, the site being submerged by water up to one meter above the mudline in order to reproduce the conditions of an offshore pile foundation. The aim of this paper is to present the main results of interpretation of the cyclic lateral tests in terms of pile deflections, bending moment, and cyclic P-Y curves. From these latter an absolute secant reaction modulus EAS,N was derived and a simple calculation model of the test single pile is proposed based on this modulus. Two applications of the proposed model are carried out, one with a 2D finite element modelling, and the second with a load transfer curves-based method.
The effect of soil-structure interaction on a single-storey, two-bay space frame resting on a pile group embedded in the cohesive soil (clay) with flexible cap is examined in this paper. For this purpose, a more rational approach is resorted to using the finite element analysis with realistic assumptions. Initially, a 3-D FEA is carried out independently for the frame on the premise of fixed column bases in which members of the superstructure are discretized using the 20-node isoparametric continuum elements. Later, a model is worked out separately for the pile foundation, by using the beam elements, plate elements and spring elements to model the pile, pile cap and soil, respectively. The stiffness obtained for the foundation is used in the interaction analysis of the frame to quantify the effect of soil-structure interaction on the response of the superstructure. In the parametric study using the substructure approach (uncoupled analysis), the effects of pile spacing, pile configuration, and pile diameter of the pile group on the response of superstructure are evaluated. The responses of the superstructure considered include the displacement at top of the frame and moments in the columns. The effect of soil-structure interaction is found to be quite significant for the type of foundation considered in the study. Fair agreement is observed between the results obtained herein using the simplified models for the pile foundation and those existing in the literature based on a complete three dimensional analysis of the building frame - pile foundation - soil system.
It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.
Progressive increase in population causing land scarcity, which is forcing construction industry to build multistory buildings having underground basements. Normally, basements are constructed for parking facility. This research work evaluates important factors which have caused the collapse of pile-anchor system at under construction five star hotel. 21 m deep excavation is carried out, to have five basements, after installation of 600 mm diameter cast in-situ contiguous concrete piles at plot periphery. To retain piles and backfill, soil anchors are installed as pit excavation is proceeded. Before collapse, anchors are designed by federal highway administration procedure and four anchor rows are installed with three strands per anchor in first row and four in remaining. However, after collapse, system is modeled and analyzed in plaxis using mohr-coulomb method. It is investigated that in-appropriate evaluation of soil properties, additional surcharge loads, lesser number of strands per anchor, shorter grouted body length and shorter pile embedment depth caused large deformations to occur which governed the collapse of east side pile wall. To resume work, old anchors are assumed to be standing at one factor of safety and then system is analyzed using finite element approach. Finally, it is concluded to use four strands per anchor in first new row and five strands in remaining three with increase in grouted and un-grouted body lengths.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on behavior of deep excavation wall system supported by steel pipe struts. A series of three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out on a deep excavation project site which adopted steel pipe struts. The results indicated that the mechanical behavior of steel pipe supported deep excavation is comparable to that of a conventional H-pile supported deep excavation, although the steel pipe supported system is required less number of struts than the conventional H-pile strut system. Also shown is that the sectional stresses of the steel pipe support system are within the allowable values implying that the steel pipe support system can be effectively used as an alternative to conventional H-pile support system.
The FTL has been developed to be able to irradiate test fuels at the irradiation hole(IR1 hole) by considering its utility and user's irradiation requirements. FTL consists of In-Pile Test Section (IPS) and Out-of-Pile System (OPS). Test condition in IPS such as pressure, temperature and the water quality, can be controlled by OPS. For safety assurance IPS is designed to have dual stainless steel pressure vessel and OPS is composed of main cooling water system, emergency cooling water system, LMP(letdown, make-up, purification) system, etc. FTL Conceptual design was set up in 2001, basic design had completed including a design requirement, basic piping & instrument diagram (P&ID), and the detail design in 2004. In 2005, the development team carried out purchase and manufacture hardware and make a contract for construction work. FTL construction work began on August, 2006 and ended on March, 2007. After FTL development which is expected to be finished by 2008, FTL will be used for the irradiation test of the new PWR-type fuel and can maximize the usage of HANARO.
The Fuel Test Loop (FTL) consists of In-Pile Test Section (IPS) and Out-of-Pile System (OPS). The test condition in IPS such as pressure, temperature and quality of the main cooling water, can be controlled by the OPS. The FTL has been developed to be able to irradiate three pins to the core irradiation hole (IR1 hole) by considering for its utility and user's irradiation requirement. The IPS vessel assembly (IVA) consists of IPS head, outer pressure vessel, inner pressure vessel, inner assembly and test fuel carrier. The IVA is approximately 5.6 m long and fits within a 74 mm in diameter envelope over the full height of the chimney. Above the top of the chimney, the head of the IPS is enlarged to allow the closure flanges and pipe work connections. IVA was designed to test the CANDU and PWR nuclear fuel pin together. Specially, wished to minimize interference by nuclear fuel change in design and synthesize these items and shape design for IVA.
The paper presents the analysis of two groups of piles subjected to lateral loads incorporating the non-linear behaviour of soil. The finite element method is adopted for carrying out the parametric study of the pile groups. The pile is idealized as a one dimensional beam element, the pile cap as two dimensional plate elements and the soil as non-linear elastic springs using the p-y curves developed by Georgiadis et al. (1992). Two groups of piles, embedded in a cohesive soil, involving two and three piles in series and parallel arrangement thereof are considered. The response of the pile groups is found to be significantly affected by the parameters such as the spacing between the piles, the number of piles in a group and the orientation of the lateral load. The non-linear response of the system is, further, compared with the one by Chore et al. (2012) obtained by the analysis of a system to the present one, except that the soil is assumed to be linear elastic. From the comparison, it is observed that the non-linearity of soil is found to increase the top displacement of the pile group in the range of 66.4%-145.6%, while decreasing the fixed moments in the range of 2% to 20% and the positive moments in the range of 54% to 57%.
Application the pile group foundation to reduce overall settlement of the foundation and also avoid a very fruitful settlement of foundations, inconsistent was carried out. In such a case, in event that the Foundation, not as a mere pile group, which as a system consisting of a broad foundation with pile Group, economic design criteria will be provided in spite of high safety. A new approach in the design of the Foundation can be introduced as the piles are just a tool to improve the parameters of soil hardness; that it can work with detachable piles from raft. Centralized arrangement of piles as the most optimal layout of piles in reducing inconsistent settlement, which is the lowest value of resulting layout in this differential settlement. Using the combination of piles connected and disconnected to form the raft, bending moment created in the raft is reduced. It also concentrated arrangements have greatest effect in reducing amount of moment applied to the raft.
