유화제 종류에 따른 nanoemulsion의 형성과 Ostwald ripening에 관한 연구 (A study on the formation and Ostwald ripening stability of nanoemulsion with various emulsifiers)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of various emulsifiers on the formation of nanoemulsions and their stability properties. MCT (medium chain triglyceride) nanoemulsions were prepared (10 wt% oil, 10 wt% emulsifiers, 20 mM bis-tris, pH 7) with emulsifier such as Tween 20 (Polyoxyethylene(20) sorbitan monolaurate), Almax 3800 (Sorbitan monooleate), soy lecithin, and SSL (sodium stearoyl lactylate) and changes in fat globule size with respect to storage period and stability properties by Turbiscan were investigated. In case of control nanoemulsion with 10 wt% Tween 20, the initial fat globule size was 89.0 nm and 113.4 nm after 28 day of storage and this large increase (ca. 24 nm) was thought to be caused by Ostwald ripening. When Tween 20 was partially replaced with Almax 3800, lecithin and SSL in nanoemulsions, their physicochemical properties (i.e., fat globule size and stability) were changed accordingly. In general, the intial fat globule size was decreased with increasing the concentration of the emulsifiers and the stability against Ostwald ripening increased. The most stable nanoemulsions against Ostwald ripening could be prepared with emulsifiers of Tween 20 and Almax 3800 or lecithin in the ratio of 6:4 (wt%), which was verified with Ostwald ripening rate (${\omega}$). In addition, the emulsion stability by Turbiscan was observed to be consistent with results of changes in fat globule size with storage period.

  • 오일/수첨 레시틴/물 계에서 전단력이 다른 두 혼합기로 제조된 나노에멀젼의 안정성에 대하여 연구하였으며, 계면활성제의 농도에 따른 나노에멀젼의 입자 크기와 안정성을 조사하였다. 입자의 크기는 광산란법에 의하여 측정하였으며 입자크기의 시간에 따른 변화를 관찰하였다. 실험 결과 나노 에멀젼 불안정화 과정은 Ostwald ripening에 의해 지배되었다. 입자 크기가 100~200nm 범위에서는 오일에 대한 계면활성제의 비율이 증가함에 따라 안정성이 감소하였으나 입자 크기가 300~400nm의 범위에서는 반대의 경향을 보였다.

Ostwald Ripening Stability of Curcumin-Loaded MCT Nanoemulsion: Influence of Various Emulsifiers

  • Curcumin is a flavonoid found in the rhizome of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa L.) and has recently attracted interest because it has numerous biological functions and therapeutic properties. In the present study, we attempted to incorporate curcumin into medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) nanoemulsions (0.15 wt% curcumin, 10 wt% MCT oil, and 10 wt% emulsifiers) with various emulsifiers [polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20), sorbitan monooleate (SM), and soy lecithin (SL)]. The physicochemical properties of the nanoemulsions including the Ostwald ripening stability were investigated. The initial droplet size was found to be 89.08 nm for the nanoemulsion with 10 wt% Tween-20 (control), and when Tween-20 was partially replaced with SM and SL, the size decreased: 73.43 nm with 4 wt% SM+6 wt% Tween-20 and 67.68 nm with 4 wt% SL+6 wt% Tween-20 (prepared at 15,000 psi). When the nanoemulsions were stored for 28 days at room temperature, the droplet size increased as the storage time increased. The largest increase was observed for the control nanoemulsion, followed by the 4 wt% SL+6 wt% Tween-20 and 4 wt% SM+6 wt% Tween-20 systems. The Turbiscan dispersion stability results strongly supported the relationship between droplet size and storage time. The time-dependent increase in droplet size was attributed to the Ostwald ripening phenomenon. Thus, the Ostwald ripening stability of curcumin-loaded MCT nanoemulsions with Tween-20 was considerably improved by partially replacing the Tween-20 with SM or SL. In addition, curcumin may have acted as an Ostwald ripening inhibitor.

괴산지역 대야산 화강암체 주변 접촉변성대(황강리층)에서의 투휘석 결정 크기분포 (Diopside DSD (crystal size distribution) in the Contact Metamorphic Aureole (Hwanggangni Formation) near the Daeyasan Granite Goesan, Korea)

  • The CSD (crystal size distribution) of diopside crystals in the calc-silicate hornfels of the Hwanggangni Formation intruded by the Cretaceous Daeyasan granite shows the patterns of continuous nucleation and growth. There is correlation between the distance from the intrusion contact and the slopes from the linear part of log(population density) vs. size diagrams. In the log(population density) vs. size diagrams of the samples systematically collected from the intrusion contact, two different groups are recognized; the slopes for the samples near the intrusion contact (horizontal distance from the contact less than 50m) are gentler (1500$cm^{-1}$) than those for the samples away from the intrusion contact (2500$cm^{-1}$, distance from the contact greater than 100 m). These differences may reflect the differences in growth rates and crystallization time, or the differences in diopside-forming reactions. All of the log(population density) vs. size diagrams show depletion of smaller crystals. The observed depletion may be due to Ostwald ripening or the changes in nucleation rates as the reactant phases diminishes. Similar grouping is also possible for the observed degree of depletion of smaller crystals; the depletion decreases with increasing distance from the intrusion contact, suggesting temperature-dependent rates of Ostwald ripening.

  • The growth process of solid grains in a liquid matrix is usually explained in tem1S of Ostwald ripening. The variation of growth (dissolution) rate as a function of grain size during Ostwald ripening predicted that the dissolution rate becomes very large as grain size decreases but the growth rate of a large grain is rather limited. Therefore. a rather uniform size distribution of grain size is maintained once after the quasi-equilibrium state is reached. Quite frequently, however, the exaggerated grain growth (EGG) is observed to occur: only a limited number of grains grow exceptionally. From the observation that the EGG occurs only for the faceted grains with apparently straight solid-liquid interfaces, the EGG is suggested to be the consequence of growth process controlled by 2-dimensional nucleation. In this study, the result by computer calculation on the grain growth process controlled by various mechanisms will be given.

  • Interest in "nanotechnology" has triggered the question whether new materials can be obtained blending nanosized particles with polymers. This contribution considers modification of polymer properties by nanoscale particles, stabilization of polymer properties by nanoscale particles, stabilization of nanoscale particles against Ostwald-ripening and agglomeration, synthesis of nanoscale particles assisted by polymers and effects of such particles on polymerization mechanisms.

고분자연료전지 내 촉매 이동 및 노화메커니즘에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Electrode Catalyst Migration and Aging Mechanism of PEMFC)

  • We studied the degradation phenomenon of Pt catalyst in PEMFC. We used the electron microscope analysis technique including the ultra-microtome pretreatment method, FEG-SEM and TEM analysis methods for analysis of Pt nanoparticles. The Pt catalyst degradation is observed not only in electrode site but also in membrane site. We investigated these various degradation phenomena. The cathode electrode layer thickness is reduced. The size of the catalyst is increased much larger than initial size in membrane site. The catalyst moved from electrode layer to the electrolyte membrane. The rounded shape of catalyst was changed to the polygon. As a result, we found that the catalyst degradation processes of migration and coarsening occurred by the followings mechanisms; (1) dissolution of Pt ; (2) diffusion of Pt ion ; (3) Pt ion chemical reduction in membrane; (4) Coarsening of Pt particles (Ostwald ripening) ; (5) polygon shape change of Pt by {111} plane growth.
