High-Performance Millimeter Wave Harmonic Output Oscillator using Sub-Harmonic Wave Injection-Synchronization (서브하모닉 주입동기에 의한 밀리미터파 대역 고조파 발진기의 고성능화)

  • This paper deals with a millimeter wave source which is utilizing sub-harmonic injection-synchronization technique. A 8.7GHz oscillator with MES-FET is fabricated, and is driven as a harmonic output oscillator at 17.4GHz by means of sub-harmonic injection-synchronization. The oscillator operates as a multiplier as well as oscillator in this system. Adopting this technique, we can obtain a high stable, high frequency millimeter wave source even though self-oscillating frequency of an oscillator is relatively low. In the experiments, the range of injection-synchronization is about 26MHz and is proportional to the input sub-harmonic power. From the spectrum analysis of the 2nd harmonic output. we blow that the phase noise of the harmonic oscillator is remarkably decreased.

Visual Perception Dynamics of Relative Phase Coordination Pattern with Additional Visual Information Using a Background Grid (상대위상을 이용한 시각적 협응 패턴의 지각 역학과 격자무늬를 이용한 부가적 감각 정보에 따른 영향)

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine if perception of visual coordination pattern is consistent with the prediction of the HKB model (Haken, Kelso, Bunz, 1985). In addition, this study aimed to see if an additional sensory information using a grid background stabilizes perception of coordination pattern. Participants joined one of two experimental groups, Normal background and Grid background, to participate the pattern recognition training session and the pattern judgment test session. Participants observed $0^{\circ}$, $18^{\circ}$, $36^{\circ}$, $54^{\circ}$, $72^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $108^{\circ}$, $126^{\circ}$, $144^{\circ}$, $162^{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$ coordination patterns characterized by two oscillating dots. The dots oscillated in 0.25 Hz for the pattern recognition training and in 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, and 2 Hz for the pattern judgment test. Judgment score, absolute judgment error, and judgment stability out of the pattern judgment test were analyzed statistically. The landscape of pattern accuracy and stability data was "inverted-U" shape with slower oscillating frequency conditions. In the faster condition, the accuracy and stability of the judgment decreased with relative phase patterns near $180^{\circ}$. These findings consistent with the prediction of the HKB model. The grid as additional sensory information did not increase accuracy and stability in coordination perception.

CALORIMETRIC INVESTIGATION OF SULFUR VULCANIZATION OF NATURAL RUBBER

  • The effects of several vulcanizing accelerators on the determination of kinetic parameters of natural rubber vulcanizate was studied by DSC. Kinetic parameters were determined by means of the calculation procedures of Borchardt-Daniels and Oscillating Disk Rheometer (ODR) cure curve analysis, using both DSC exothermal thermogram and ODR cure curve. In order to examine the credibility in the DSC method the same compound which was und for DSC method was used for the comparison with the results of ODR data. Upon this method, kinetic rate constant (k), and Arrehenius parameter (Ea, ko, n) have been determined for rubber compounds via a new method using DSC thermogram and ODR cure curve. In the comparison of DSC and ODR results, kinetic parameters has shown good agreements between two results. Consequently, from the present studies, it is shown that the DSC thermoanalytical method can provide an alternate new method of kinetic study of rubber vulcanization.

Design and Fabrication of CMOS Low-Power Cross-Coupled Voltage Controlled Oscillators for a Short Range Radar (근거리 레이더용 CMOS 저전력 교차 결합 전압 제어 발진기 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, three kinds of 24 GHz low-power CMOS cross-coupled voltage controlled oscillators are designed and fabricated for a short-range radar applications using TSMC 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The basic CMOS crosscoupled voltage controlled oscillator is designed for oscillating around a center frequency of 24.1 GHz and subthreshold oscillators are developed for low power operation from it. A double resonant circuit is newly applied to the subthreshold oscillator to improve the problem that parasitic capacitance of large transistors in a subthreshold oscillator can push the oscillation frequency toward lower frequencies. The fabricated chips show the phase noise of -101~-103.5 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset, the output power of -11.85~-15.33 dBm and the frequency tuning range of 475~852 MHz. In terms of power consumption, the basic oscillator consumes 5.6 mW, while the subthreshold oscillator does 3.3 mW. The subthreshold oscillator with the double resonant circuit shows relatively lower power consumption and improved phase noise performance while maintaining a comparable frequency tuning range. The subthreshold oscillator with double resonances has FOM of -185.2 dBc based on 1 mW DC power reference, which is an about 3 dB improved result compared with the basic oscillator.

The three dimensional measuring system for ELF magnetic fields with the multiturn loop-type sensors (멀티턴 루우프형 센서를 이용한 3차원 ELF 자장측정계)

  • With the three dimensional magnetic field measuring system dealt with in this paper, accurate measurements and analyses of extremely low frequency(ELF) magnetic fields caused by starting and/or operating electric devices and power installations can be conducted. To obtain high performance for lower frequency and spatial components without any distortion, the measuring system is designed as three dimensionally including the multiturn loop-type magnetic field sensors, differential amplifiers and active integrators. As the results of calibration experiments, the frequency response characteristics of the measuring system range from 8[Hz] to about 53[kHz] for each direction of x, y, z axes, and the response sensitivities are 9.54, 9.21, $10.89[mV/{\mu}T]$, respectively. The actual survey experiments by using an oscillating impulse current generator confirm a reliability of the proposed measuring system. Also, through the other experiments by using small-sized induction motors, the magnetic field intensities when starting and steady-state operating mark 15.8, $8.61[{\mu}T]$ as maximum value, respectively. And those intensities decrease steeply according as the measuring distance increases.

  • Filiform hairs that respond to movements of the surrounding medium are the mechanoreceptors commonly found in arthropods and vertebrates. In these creatures, the filiform hairs function as a sensory system for raider detection. Parametric analyses of the motion response of filiform hairs are conducted by using a mathematical model of an artificial flow sensor to understand the possible operating ranges of a microfabricated device. It is found that the length and diameter of the sensory hair are the major parameters that determine the mechanical sensitivities and responses in a mean flow with an oscillating component. By changing the hair length, the angular displacement, velocity, and acceleration could be detected in a wide range of frequencies. Although the torques due to drag and virtual mass are very small, they are also very influential factors on the hair motion. The resonance frequency of the hair decreases as the length and diameter of the hair increase.

  • This paper describes the continuing effort to analysis and design on dynamic and electrical behavior of gamma-type free piston Stirling engine/generator with dual-opposed linear generator for domestic micro-CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system. The double acting Stirling engine/generator has one displacer and two power piston which are supported by flexure springs. Two power pistons oscillate with symmetric sinusoidal displacement and are connected with moving magnet type linear generators for power generation. To operate Stirling engine/generator, combustion heat of natural gas is supplied to hot-end and heat is rejected from cold-end by cooling water. The temperature difference across the displacer induces the oscillating motion, and it can be explained with mass-spring vibration system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design process of linear generator for the double acting free-piston Stirling engine.

  • This paper investigates a magnetoelectric (ME) vibration energy harvester that can scavenge energy in arbitrary directions in a plane as well as wide working bandwidth. In this harvester, a circular cross-section cantilever rod is adopted to extract the external vibration energy due to the capability of it's free end oscillating in arbitrary in-plane directions. And permanent magnets are fixed to the free end of the cantilever rod, causing it to experience a non-linear force as it moves with respect to stationary ME transducers and magnets. The magnetically coupled cantilever rod exhibits a nonlinear and two-mode motion, and responds to vibration over a much broader frequency range than a standard cantilever. The effects of the magnetic field distribution and the magnetic force on the harvester's voltage response are investigated with the aim to obtain the optimal vibration energy harvesting performances. A prototype harvester was fabricated and experimentally tested, and the experimental results verified that the harvester can extract energy from arbitrary in-plane directions, and had maximum bandwidth of 5.5 Hz, and output power of 0.13 mW at an acceleration of 0.6 g (with $g=9.8ms^{-2}$).

Oscillatory Motion of Natural Convective Flow in Partially Divided Square Enclosure (수평격판을 갖는 4각형 밀폐공간내에서 자연대류의 진동유동)

  • An oscillatory motion of the natural convection in a two dimensional, partially divided square enclosure heated from below, and fitted with a partition is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was situated perpendicularly at the mid-height of the one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were performed with the variation of the length and the thermal conductivity of the partition, and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). also, the effect of the inclination angles was studied for the transition to the oscillating flow. As the results, it was found that the intensity and frequency of oscillatory motion were affected significantly by the Rayleigh number and the length of partition. The effect of oscillatory motion was weaken with the increase of the thermal conductivity of partition. The inclination angle for the transition was raised with the increase of Rayleigh number and the length of partition.

Influence of viscous effects on numerical prediction of motions of SWATH vessels in waves

  • The accurate prediction of motion in waves of a marine vehicle is essential to assess the maximum sea state vs. operational requirements. This is particularly true for small crafts, such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASV). Two different numerical methods to predict motions of a SWATH-ASV are considered: an inviscid strip theory initially developed at MIT for catamarans and then adapted for SWATHs and new a hybrid strip theory, based on the numerical solution of the radiation forces by an unsteady viscous, non-linear free surface flow solver. Motion predictions obtained by the viscous flow method are critically discussed against those obtained by potential flow strip theory. Effects of viscosity are analyzed by comparison of sectional added mass and damping calculated at different frequencies and for different sections, RAOs and motions response in irregular waves at zero speed. Some relevant conclusions can be drawn from this study: influence of viscosity is definitely non negligible for SWATH vessels like the one presented: amplitude of the pitch and heave motions predicted at the resonance frequency differ of 20% respectively and 50%; in this respect, the hybrid method with fully non-linear, viscous free surface calculation of the radiation forces turns out to be a very valuable tool to improve the accuracy of traditional strip theories, without the burden of long computational times requested by fully viscous time domain three dimensional simulations.
