  • Because of the orthotropic elastic properties and significant two-way bending action, orthotropic plate theory may be suitable for describing the behavior of concrete filled grid bridge decks. Current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification(2004) has live load moment equations considering flexural rigidity ratio between longitudinal and transverse direction, but the Korea highway bridge design specification(2005) doesn't. The Korea highway bridge standard specification LRFD(1996) considers an orthotropic plate model with a single load to estimate live load moments in concrete filled grid bridge decks, which may not be conservative. This paper presents live load moment equations for truck and passenger car, based on orthotropic plate theory. The equations of truck model use multiple presence factor, impact factor, design truck and design tandem of the Korea highway bridge standard specification LRFD(1996). The estimated moments are verified through finite-element analyses.

  • The orthotropic theory is applied for the nonwoven fabrics that have a preferred orientation direction, the case if the structure is not isotropic. The polynomial regression analysis is employed to allow the attainment of more statistically meaningful information. A functional form based on the transformation rule is developed for the orthotropic approach. The predictions thus obtained are seen to be in excellent agreements with experimental data and the resulting compliances exhibit meaningful relationships for the processing conditions. The compatibility of the compliances from tensile and shear analyses has been explored prior to a practical application of the four compliances defining the in-plane strain-stress field.

  • This work presents the buckling investigation of embedded orthotropic nanoplates such as graphene by employing a new refined plate theory and nonlocal small-scale effects. The elastic foundation is modeled as two-parameter Pasternak foundation. The proposed two-variable refined plate theory takes account of transverse shear influences and parabolic variation of the transverse shear strains within the thickness of the plate by introducing undetermined integral terms, hence it is unnecessary to use shear correction factors. Nonlocal governing equations for the single layered graphene sheet are obtained from the principle of virtual displacements. The proposed theory is compared with other plate theories. Analytical solutions for buckling loads are obtained for single-layered graphene sheets with isotropic and orthotropic properties. The results presented in this study may provide useful guidance for design of orthotropic graphene based nanodevices that make use of the buckling properties of orthotropic nanoplates.

  • The specially orthotropic plate theory is used for analysis of panels made of girders and cross-beams. The cross-sections of both girders and cross-beams are H-types. The results of application of this method to rolled beam bridge by using specially orthotropic plate theory is presented. The result is compared with that of the beam theory. Finite difference method is used for this purpose. The influence of the $D_{22}$ stiffness on the natural frequency is rigorously investigated. According to numerical examination given in this paper, the result by the plate theory is 2.43 times stiffer than that of beam theory.

  • A post-tensioned steel plate girder bridge with cross-beams is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. The cross-sections of both girders and cross-beams are WF types. The result is compared with that of the beam theory. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical load, and axial loads and moment due to post-tension. In this paper, finite difference method for numerical analysis of simple supported bridge is developed. Relatively exact solution is obtained even with small number of meshes. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used in design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • Sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is developed here for dynamic buckling of functionally graded (FG) nano-plates. The material properties of plate are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. In order to present a realistic model, the structural damping of nano-structure is considered using Kelvin-Voigt model. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled with a novel foundation namely as orthotropic visco-Pasternak medium. Size effects are incorporated based on Eringen'n nonlocal theory. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The differential quadrature method (DQM) in conjunction with Bolotin method is applied for obtaining the dynamic instability region (DIR). The detailed parametric study is conducted, focusing on the combined effects of the nonlocal parameter, orthotropic visco-Pasternak foundation, power index of FG plate, structural damping and boundary conditions on the dynamic instability of system. The results are compared with those of first order shear deformation theory and higher-order shear deformation theory. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the dynamic buckling responses of system.

  • A post-tensioned slab bridge is analyzed by the specially orthotropic theory. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of rule of mixture. This slab bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical and axial loads. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory are used for analysis. The result of beam analysis is modified to obtain the solution of the plate analysis. The result of this paper can be used for post-tensioned slab bridge analysis by the engineers with undergraduate study in near future.

  • The aerodynamic stability of orthotropic tensioned membrane structures with rectangular plane is theoretically studied under the uniform ideal potential flow. The aerodynamic force acting on the membrane surface is determined by the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics. Then, based on the large amplitude theory and the D'Alembert's principle, the interaction governing equation of wind-structure is established. Under the circumstances of single mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction equation into a system of second order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the stability of the system characteristic equation, the critical divergence instability wind velocity is determined. Finally, from different parametric analysis, we can conclude that it has positive significance to consider the characteristics of orthotropic and large amplitude for preventing the instability destruction of structures.

  • Two-way concrete slab is often modeled as an orthotropic plate. In the modeling, flexural rigidities of the slab which depend upon the re-bar quantity have to be taken into account. Elastic equivalence technique in which the equilibrium and compatibility of the cross-section of slab satisfied is utilized to determine th flexural rigidities. In the analysis Navier's method is applied on the concrete slab with all edges simply supported under inform lateral load. In addition to the analysis using orthotropic plate theory, finite element method is also adopted to suggest the finite element modeling and to investigate the applicability of the method. Results obtained by both methods were compared and it is observed that the difference of the results was increased as the ratio of re-bar quantity increased.
