  • The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method can identify principal modes that optimally capture the energy content from large multi-dimensional data set. In this study unsteady pressure fields on the rotor blade surface of a helicopter in forward flight are expressed by a reduced order model based on the POD method. Special modes containing high energy are analyzed to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics in more efficient way. The CFD simulation of flowfields around helicopter rotor blade in hovering motion is also conducted to validate its prediction with experimental result. In the process 7 modes containing energy ratio 99% from 240 snapshots information are identified and utilized to construct a reduced order model.

  • In general, castings often have complex shapes and significant variations in thickness within a single product, making grid generation for simulations challenging. Casting flows involve multiphase flows, requiring the tracking of the boundary between air and molten metal. Additionally, considerable time is spent calculating pressure fields due to density differences in a numerical analysis. For these reasons, the Cartesian grid system has traditionally been used in mold filling simulations. However, orthogonal grids fail to represent shapes accurately, leading to a momentum loss caused by the stair-like grid patterns on curved and sloped surfaces. This can alter the flow of molten metals and result in incorrect casting process designs. To address this issue, simulations in the Cartesian grid system involve creating a large number of grids to represent shapes more accurately. Alternatively, the Cut Cell method can be applied to address the problems arising from the Cartesian grid system. In this study, analysis results based on the number of grid in the Cartesian grid system for a casting flow analysis were compared with results obtained using the Cut Cell method. Casting flow simulations of actual products during various casting processes were also conducted, and these results were analyzed with and without applying the Cut Cell method.

  • During machining of dies and molds with sculptured surfaces. the cutter contact area changes continuously and results in cutting force variation. In order to implement cutting force prediction model into a CAM system, an effective and fast method is necessary. In this paper. a new method is proposed to predict mean cutting force. The cutter contact area in the spherical part of the cutter is obtained using Z-map, and expressed by the grids on the cutter plane orthogonal to the cutter axis. New empirical cutting parameters were defined to describe the cutting force in the spherical part of cutter. Before the mean cutting force calculation, the cutting force density in each grid is calculated and saved to force map on the cutter plane. The mean cutting force in an arbitrary cutter contact area can be easily calculated by summing up the cutting force density of the engaged grid of the force map. The proposed method was verifed through the slotting and slanted surface machining with various inclination angles. It was shown that the mean force can be calculated fast and effectively through the proposed method for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and holes.

  • This paper represents the importance of dependent variables in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates just as the importance of those variables of convective scheme and turbulence model in computational fluid dynamics. Each of Cartesian, physical covariant and physical contravariant velocity components was tested as the dependent variables of momentum equations in the staggered grid system. In the flow past a circular cylinder, the results were computed to use each of three variables and compared to experimental data. In the skewed driven cavity flow, the results were computed to check the grid dependency of the variables. The results used in Cartesian and physical contravariant components of velocity in cylinder flow show the nearly same accuracy. In the case of Cartesian and contravariant component, the same number of vortex was predicted in the skewed driven cavity flow. Vortex strength of Cartesian component case has about 30% lower value than that of the other two cases.

  • The deterioration of existing bridges has become a major problem around the world. In the paper, a new model and an associated stress checking method are proposed for concrete box girders strengthened by external prestressing. The new model called the spatial grid model can analyze all the spatial behaviors clearly by transforming the box girder into discrete orthogonal grids which are equivalent to plate elements. Then the three-layer stresses are employed as the stress checking indices to evaluate the stress state of the plate elements. The initial stress check before strengthening reveals the cracked and potential cracking areas for existing bridges, making the strengthening design more targeted and scientific; the subsequent stress check after strengthening evaluates the strengthening effect and ensures safety. A deficient bridge is selected as the practical example, verifying the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model and stress checking method. The results show that principal stresses in the middle layer of plate elements reflect the main effects of external prestressing and thus are the key stress checking indices for strengthening. Moreover, principal stresses check should be conducted in all parts of the strengthened structure not only in the webs. As for the local effects of external prestressing especially in the areas near anchorage and deviator, normal stresses check in the outer and inner layers dominates and local strengthening measures should be taken if necessary.

  • With 3-D vision measuring, camera calibration is necessary to calculate parameters accurately. Camera calibration was developed widely in two categories. The first establishes reference points in space, and the second uses a grid type frame and statistical method. But, the former has difficulty to setup reference points and the latter has low accuracy. In this paper we present an algorithm for camera calibration using perspective ratio of the grid type frame with different line widths. It can easily estimate camera calibration parameters such as lens distortion, focal length, scale factor, pose, orientations, and distance. The advantage of this algorithm is that it can estimate the distance of the object. Also, the proposed camera calibration method is possible estimate distance in dynamic environment such as autonomous navigation. To validate proposed method, we set up the experiments with a frame on rotator at a distance of 1, 2, 3, 4[m] from camera and rotate the frame from -60 to 60 degrees. Both computer simulation and real data have been used to test the proposed method and very good results have been obtained. We have investigated the distance error affected by scale factor or different line widths and experimentally found an average scale factor that includes the least distance error with each image. The average scale factor tends to fluctuate with small variation and makes distance error decrease. Compared with classical methods that use stereo camera or two or three orthogonal planes, the proposed method is easy to use and flexible. It advances camera calibration one more step from static environments to real world such as autonomous land vehicle use.

  • This study aims to test the feasibility of combined use of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) hydrodynamic model and WASP7.3 (Water Quality Analysis Program) model to improve accuracy of water quality predictions of the Yongdam Lake, Korea. The orthogonal curvilinear grid system was used for EFDC model to represent riverine shape of the study area. Relationship between volume, surface and elevation results were checked to verify if the grid system represents morphology of the lake properly. Monthly average boundary water quality conditions were estimated using the monthly monitored water quality data from Korean Ministry of Environment DB system. Monthly tributary flow rates were back-routed using dam discharge data and allocated in proportion to each basin area as direct measurements were not available. The optimum number of grid system was determined to be 372 horizontal cells and 10 vertical layers of the site for 1 year simulation of hydrodynamics and water quality out of iterative trials. Monthly observed BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the lake were used for calibration of WASP7.3 model. This study shows that EFDC and WASP can be used in series successfully to improve accuracy in water quality modeling. However, it was observed that the amount of data to develop inflow water quality and flow rate boundary conditions and water quality data inside lake for calibration were not enough for accurate modeling. It is suggested that object-oriented data collection systems would be necessary to ensure accuracy of EFDC-WASP model application and thus for efficient lake water quality management strategy development.

  • An accurate analysis procedure to solve the flow about a flat plate at various incidences has been developed. The Navier-Stokes equations of stream function and vorticity form are solved in a sufficiently large computational domain, in which the grid lines are mutually orthogonal. The details of the flow near the singularity at the tip of the plate is well captured by the analytic solution which is asymptotically matched to the numerically generated outer solution. The solution for each region is obtained iteratively : the solution of one (inner or outer) region uses that of the other as the boundary condition after each cycle. The resulting procedure is accurate everywhere and also computationally efficient as the singularity has been removed. It is applied to the flat plate for a wide range of Re : the results agree very well with the existing computation and experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed synchronization algorithm for wireless mesh networks based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access. For time and frequency synchronization, a node requests its neighbor nodes for a change of fast Fourier transform starting points, transmission times, and carrier frequencies needed for synchronization. The node also updates its own time and frequency elements through simple formulas based on request messages received from neighbor nodes using a guard interval and a cyclic prefix. This process with the cooperation of neighbor nodes leads to a gradual synchronization of all nodes in the network. Through a performance comparison with a conventional scheme, we obtain simulation results indicating that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in random topologies and a grid topology.

  • This study introduces a method to evaluate the probability of a specific area to be affected by a drought of a given severity and shows its potential for investigating agricultural drought characteristics. The method is applied to Gyeonggi as a case study. The proposed procedure includes Standard Precipitation Index(SPI) time series, which are linearly transformed by the Empirical Orthogonal Functions(EOF) method, These EOFs are extended temporally with AutoRegressive Moving Average(ARMA) method and spatially with Kriging method. By performing these simulations, long time series of SPI can be simulated for each designed grid cell in whole Gyeonggi area. The probability distribution functions of the area covered by a drought and the drought severity are then derived and combined to produce drought severity-area-frequency(SAF) curves.
