  • This study was conducted to examine the role of the transcription factors (TFs) (RsMYB1 and mPAP1+B-Peru) in the regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis in the ornamental torenia cv. Kauai rose. In this study, we could produce several putative transgenic lines overexpressing the TFs via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, and presence of the TFs in the randomly selected five transgenic lines was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). According to results of reverse transcription-PCR analysis (RT-PCR), the expression of the TFs in all transgenic lines and of the anthocyanin structural genes (CHS, F3H, DFR, and ANS) in all transgenic lines and WT plants were distinctly detectable. However, transcript levels of the structural genes expressed in the transgenic lines overexpressing TFs were significantly higher than those expressed in WT plants. Therefore, it is suggested that anthocyanin content in flowers of the transgenic torenia would be significantly higher than that in flowers of WT plants. Moreover, these results indicate that the TFs (RsMYB1 and mPAP1+B-Peru) could be exploited as potential anthocyanin regulatory TFs to enhance anthocyanin content in the other horticultural plants.

  • Recently two thousand year old several villages ruins discovered at Amsadong, Daeshimli and Hunbaukol near the Han River side in Korea. An investigation of the present flora of these three localities was done. There are 84 families including 419 species of vascular plants. The vegetations of flora in the localities of the Han River side are very similar. the forests are poorly developed and appear as the secondary vegetations. The reforest plants can be recognized as Pinus rigida, quercus acutissima, Q. serrata, Robinia pseudoacacia and Alnus hirta. Herbaceous plants of Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Phragmitis japonicus bind up the soiles of the Han River side. Populus nigra grows abundantly in the moist places of sand bars which are located on the river side south of Daeshimli and on the northern side of the Han River across from Hunbaukol. These three area are fully cultivated but still many primitive farm techniques are employed. Farm produce crops include rice, corn, barley wheat, other vegetables, and a few ornamental plants. In this study the author found flower color variations ranging from a dark blue to a pale blue, and chromosome number differences existing between the populations of Commelina communis. The dark blue flowered taxa chromosome number is 44 and in the pale blue taxa it is 72. The wild white flowered Chrysanthemum is Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herb. ssp. acutilobum and which has finely lobed leaves, and has 54 chromosome in the root tip cells.

  • In this study, an on-site survey was conducted around Gasado island at Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam during July 2 to 25, 2002. The naturalized plants investigated in the surveyed sites were revealed 15 families and 39 species, including Althaea rosea and Oxalis articulata, which are ornamental plants. Only 10 species appeared in Imjado island among the surveyed sites the surveyed sites and Imjado Island, including Elymus sibiricus, Lolium perenne, Chenopodium album, Oxalis articulata, Oxalis corymbosa, Oenothera odorata, Xanthium strumarium, Bidens frondosa, Ambrosia artemisiaefolia var. elatior, and Taraxacum officinale. 6 species were distributed only in Gasado island, Jindo-gun, which included include Festuca myuros, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Amorpha fruiticosa, Malva neglecta, Calendula arvensis, and Carthamus tinctorius. 18 species were showed in Soheuksan island.; Yeosu area, 29 species; Imja Island in Sinan-gun, 34 species, and Gasado Island in Jindo-gun revealed 39 species. It is believed that the species of naturalized plants have been expanded compared to the other areas because of close location to the inland and large population fastiy. The Urbanization Index(UI) of this area was found to be 19.5. The naturalized plant communites in these surveyed sites were classified into Rumex crispus, Elymus sibiricus, and Lolium perenne community according to the vegetation table. Furthermore, they formed a community around areas that received great artificial influence from human dwellings or roads due to the characteristics of species distribution

  • The invasive pest Brontispa longissima(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), native to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, has extended its distribution to Australia, Asia and Pacific islands and caused serious leaf damages of the coconut palm Cocos nuciferain the invaded regions. Although biological control using parasitic wasps has successfully reduced population density and leaf damage levels, this pest and its natural enemies have not been efficiently producedin conventional methods using young leaves of C. nucifera. In the present study, we examined suitability of plants easily available in Thailand and Japan for mass rearing of this pest to develop effective mass rearing system of this pest. Mature, green leaves of the palms were also suitable for immature development and adult reproduction of this pest. Since mature leaves of C. nucifera are more abundant and less contaminated with fungus than the unopened leaf buds, mature leaves could be a promising plant diet for mass rearing of B. longissima. Ornamental palms such as Hyophorbe lagenicaulis and Washingtonia filifera were also suitable for immature development and reproduction of B. longissima. Away from palms, the cattail Typha spp. can sustain immature development and adult reproduction of B. longissima. In the area where C. nucifera is rare or not available, W. filifera or Typha spp. would be good food plants for mass rearing of this pest.
