Modeling of Piano Sound Using Method of Line-Segment Approximation and Curve Fitting (선분 근사법과 곡선의 적합성을 이용한 피아노 음의 모델링)

  • In this paper, we will discuss the characteristics of the magnitude and the phase of the piano sound in frequency domain by using the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform). The method deciding the parameters representing those sounds through the mathematical model is described. We used the curve fitting method for the modeling of the harmonic part of the sound including the fundamental frequency in order to minimize the errors between original sounds and modeled sounds. furthermore, we used the line segment approximation method for the modeling of the noise part around fundamental frequency. We also applied the same method for the phase model and could get the modeled sound to be similar to the original sound using the parameters. Therefore the high compression ratio comparing the modeled sound to the original sound is achieved.

  • In this paper, Sentence-Sip E Il Ka Gi Seo U1 E Gan Da was spoken by 4 men and 3 see sound is used for the experiment. A/D conversion time is 30 sec. Data are obtained using the microcomputer and compressed by ADPCM Rate of compression is 1/8. Data compressed by ADPCM are synthesized and compared to the original sound. Rate of speech identification is analysed using the sound pressure, white noise. Coding of ADPCM is done for 5bit. As the result of fixing starting voltage by 2.6V. It is acertained that variable value increases in initial speech signal and then process is made by minimum value "3". From the result of processing, synthesized sound is almost eaual to original sound. Minimum values cause distorition, Dummy Head System is used in this experiment.xperiment.

  • It is well known that acoustic signals, even measured in an anechoic chamber, can be contaminated due to the wall interference. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the original signal from the measured data, which is very critical for the case of measurement of source signal in a water tunnel. In this thesis, new methods for the reconstruction of sound sources are proposed and validated by using Boundary Element Method from measured data in a closed space. The inverse Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative are used for the reconstruction of sound sources in a closed space. An arbitrary Kirchhoff surface over the sources is proposed to solve the surface information instead of direct solution for the source. Although sound sources are not directly known by the inverse Helmholtz equation, the original sound source of pressure-field outside of the wall can be indirectly obtained by using this new method.

  • Analog cassette tapes are easily changed due to environmental factors. To digitize is the best way to preserve a sound source. The way to digitize is to deal with the original sound to be enhanced to a variety of sources by playing through the audio card after recording. In this process to occur, it's the most important to remove various noise and equalizing sound in a method for preserving. It's studied about how to remove noise by using one of softwares, Cubase 5. 5, to remove hiss noise, which happens changing analog tape into digitalization. A amount of hiss noise is reduced to use X-Noise software of Wave which uses in Cubase 5.0, one of PLUG-IN. The noise is removed changing value of threshold and reduction every 10 times in no change of origin sound. To keep regular condition, the experiment to remove the hiss noise is conducted based on sound meondle, which is one of sound Nonmaegi. The noise is removed easily when the value of threshold is getting high in spite of giving a little value of reduction. However, as it gives a amount of reduction high, the damage rate of the sound source gets high.

  • When plan breakdown by permeation of fill dam, bank by original decision scale model test of sound, original decision scale model test of sound that destroy having used water was carried out. And original decision scale model test of sound that use viscous fluid is carried out, but doubt remains in experiment result in state that verification of law of similarity is not achieved.   • Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) has been used as a powerful tool for musical sound modeling. This technique considers a sound as a combination of a deterministic plus a stochastic component. The deterministic component is represented by the series of sinusoids that are described by amplitude, frequency, and phase functions and the stochastic component is represented by a series of magnitude spectrum envelopes that functions as a time varying filter excited by white noise. These representations make it possible for a synthesized sound to attain all the perceptual characteristics of the original sound. However, sometimes considerable phase variations occur in the deterministic component by using the conventional SMS for the complex sound such as whale sounds when the partial frequencies in successive frames differ. This is because it utilizes the calculated phase to synthesize deterministic component of the sound. As a result, it does not provide a good spectrum matching between original and synthesized spectrum in higher frequency region. To overcome this problem, we propose a modified SMS that provides good spectrum matching of original and synthesized sound by calculating complex residual spectrum in frequency domain and utilizing original phase information to synthesize the deterministic component of the sound. Analysis and simulation results for synthesizing whale sounds suggest that the proposed method is comparable to the conventional SMS in both time and frequency domain. However, the proposed method outperforms the SMS in better spectrum matching.

Sound Absorption and Physical Properties of Carbonized Fiberboards with Three Different Densities

  • Characteristics of carbonized fiberboard such as chemical materials absorption, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical and mechanical performance were determined in previous studies. The carbonized board therefore confirmed that having excellent abilities of these characteristics. In this study, the effect of density on physical properties and sound absorption properties of carbonized fiberboards at $800^{\circ}C$ were investigated for the potential use of carbonized fiberboards as a replacement of conventional sound absorbing material. The thickness of fiberboards after carbonization was reduced 49.9%, 40.7%, and 43.3% in low density fiberboard (LDF), medium density fiberboard (MDF), and high density fiberboard (HDF), respectively. Based on SEM images, porosity of carbonized fiberboard increased by carbonization due to removing adhesives. Moreover, carbonization did not destroy structure of wood fiber based on SEM results. Carbonization process influenced contraction of fiberboard. The sound absorption coefficient of carbonized low density fiberboard (c-LDF) was higher than those of carbonized medium density fiberboard (c-MDF) and carbonized high density fiberboard (c-HDF). This result was similar with original fiberboards, which indicated sound absorbing ability was not significantly changed by carbonization compared to that of original fiberboards. Therefore, the sound absorbing coefficient may depend on source, texture, and density of fiberboard rather than carbonization.

Effect of Suction Nozzle Modification on the Performance and Aero-acoustic Noise of a Vacuum Cleaner

  • The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner was modified to enhance the power performance and to reduce the airflow-induced acoustic noise. The suction power efficiencies of the vacuum cleaner were measured for various nozzles; (1) original nozzle, (2) original nozzle with modified trench height, (3) original nozzle with modified connecting chamber, and (4) a combination of (2) and (3). In addition, the suction pressure and sound pressure level around the suction nozzle were measured to validate the reduction of acoustic noise. The power efficiency and mean suction pressure increased when the trench height of the suction nozzle was increased. This was attributed to the suppression of the flow separation in the suction channel. Modification of the connecting chamber in the original nozzle, which had an abrupt contraction from a rectangular chamber into a circular pipe, into a smooth converging contraction substantially improved the suction flow into the connecting pipe. When both modifications were applied simultaneously, the resulting suction nozzle was more effective from the viewpoints of aerodynamic power increase and sound pressure level reduction.

Spectral Modeling Synthesis of Haegeum using GPU (GPU를 이용한 해금의 스펙트럼 모델링)

  • This paper presents a parallel approach of formant synthesis method for haegeum on graphics processing units (GPU) using spectral modeling. Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) is a technique that models time-varying spectra as a combination of sinusoids and a time-varying filtered noise component. A second-order digital resonator by the impulse-invariant transform (IIT) is applied to generate deterministic components and the results are band-pass filtered to adjust magnitude. The noise is calculated by first generating the sinusoids with formant synthesis, subtracting them from the original sound, and then removing some harmonics remained. The synthesized sounds are consequently by adding sinusoids, which are shown to be similar to the original Haegeum sounds. Furthermore, GPU accelerates the synthesis process enabling- real time music synthesis system development, supporting more sound effect, and multiple musical sound compositions.

Theory of Acoustic Quanta and its Application on Sound Design (음향 양자 이론의 사운드 디자인적 응용)

  • Acoustic Quanta, which British Physicist Dennis Gabor created, is the theoretical background for granular synthesis and has influenced many computer music artists and sound designers. Acoustic Quanta is a very short sound burst, lasting only 1 to 100 ms. Granular synthesis is a sound synthesis technique which slices original sound into sound grains and re-combines them into a new acoustic event. Concept of sound grain is borrowed from the acoustic quanta. Granular Synthesis can make very unique sound, so that it can be useful in many ways, especially in sound design. This paper presents concept of acoustic quanta and granular synthesis. It then discusses making a synthesizer as an implementation of synchronous granular synthesis and its applications on sound design. As a result, the duration of acoustic quanta should range between 0.239 and 33.367 ms, in consideration of audible frequencies, which is different from the original concept of the acoustic quanta.
