  • Facial feature detection is a fundamental function in the field of computer vision such as security, bio-metrics, 3D modeling, and face recognition. There are many algorithms for the function, active shape model is one of the most popular local texture models. This paper addresses issues related to face detection, and implements an efficient extraction algorithm for extracting the facial feature points to use on iOS platform. In this paper, we extend the original ASM algorithm to improve its performance by four modifications. First, to detect a face and to initialize the shape model, we apply a face detection API provided from iOS CoreImage framework. Second, we construct a weighted local structure model for landmarks to utilize the edge points of the face contour. Third, we build a modified model definition and fitting more landmarks than the classical ASM. And last, we extend and build two-dimensional profile model for detecting faces within input images. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on experimental test set containing over 500 face images, and found to successfully extract facial feature points, clearly outperforming the original ASM.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel polygonal approximation of digital curves that preserve original shapes. The proposed method first detects break points, which have two different consecutive vectors, and sets an initial dominant point set. The approximation is then performed iteratively by deleting a dominant point using a novel distance, which can measure both the distance and the angle acuteness. The experimental results show that the proposed method can preserve original shapes and is appropriate for various shapes, including slab-sided shapes.

  • According to Scythian tradition, many burials contained numerous artifacts, from weapons and harness to everyday objects and a multiplicity of personal adornments. Most valuable of all is the Scythian Gold often lavishly decorated with precious stones. The detailed images on these pieces make it possible for us to picture the appearance of the Scythians, their clothes and weapons. Scythian Gold Plaques were attached to the fabric in such a way that when they moved with each movement of the wearer it created what must have been a dazzling sight in bright daylight. Scythian Gold Plaques were divided into several types according to the shape, animal style(curved beast shape, profile shape, head reversed over its back shape), round shape, quadrilateral form, star shape, flower shape, crescent shape, bundle shape, human appearance. Through the antique tombs bequests of Three Kingdom States hereby describe the original forms of their source of Baekje gold plaque were influenced by Scythe style. Like nearly all Scythian ornaments, such gold pieces were designed to maximize various magical powers and to signify the owner's importance relative to his fellow tribesmen.

  • Art historians and critics have defined the style as common features appeared in a class of objects. Abstract common features from a set of objects have been used as a bench mark for date and location of original works. Commonalities in shapes are identified by relationships as well as physical properties from shape descriptions. This paper will focus on how the computer and human can recognize common shape properties from a class of shape objects to learn design knowledge. Shape representation using schema theory has been explored and possible inductive generalization from shape descriptions has been investigated. Also learned shape knowledge can be used. for new design process as design concept. Several design process such as parametric design, replacement design, analogy design etc. are used for these design processes. Works of Mario Botta and Louis Kahn are analyzed for explicitly clarifying the process from conceptual ideas to final designs. In this paper, theories of computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and linguistics are employed as important bases.

  • This paper proposes a new technique of optimal codebook design in multistage gain-shape vector quantization (MS-GS VQ) for wireless image communication. An original image is divided into a smany blocks as possible in order to get strong robustness to channel transmission errors: the original image is decomposed into a number of subband images, each of which contains a sperate spatial frequency information and is obtained by the biorthogonal wavlet transform; each subband is separated into several consecutive VQ stages, where each stage has a residual information of the previous stage; one vector in each stage is divided into two components-gain and shape. But, this decomposition genrates too many blocks and it thus makes the determination of optimal codebooks difficult. We overcome this difficulty by evolving each block's codebook independently with different genetic algorithm that uses each stage's individual training vectors. Th eimpact of th eproposed VQ technique on the channel transmission errors is compared with that of other VQ techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed VQ technique (MS-GS VQ) with the optimal codebook designe dy genetic algorithms is very robust to channel transmission errors even under the bursty and high BER conditions.

  • Large-scale earthquakes pose serious threats to infrastructure causing substantial damage and large residual deformations. Superelastic (SE) Shape-Memory-Alloys (SMAs) are unique alloys with the ability to undergo large deformations, but can recover its original shape upon stress removal. The purpose of this research is to exploit this characteristic of SMAs such that concrete Beam-Column Joints (BCJs) reinforced with SMA bars at the plastic hinge region experience reduced residual deformation at the end of earthquakes. Another objective is to evaluate the seismic performance of SMA Reinforced Concrete BCJs repaired with flowable Structural-Repair-Concrete (SRC). A $\frac{3}{4}$-scale BCJ reinforced with SMA rebars in the plastic-hinge zone was tested under reversed cyclic loading, and subsequently repaired and retested. The joint was selected from an RC building located in the seismic region of western Canada. It was designed and detailed according to the NBCC 2005 and CSA A23.3-04 recommendations. The behaviour under reversed cyclic loading of the original and repaired joints, their load-storey drift, and energy dissipation ability were compared. The results demonstrate that SMA-RC BCJs are able to recover nearly all of their post-yield deformation, requiring a minimum amount of repair, even after a large earthquake, proving to be smart structural elements. It was also shown that the use of SRC to repair damaged BCJs can restore its full capacity.

  • Motivated by the Weber's Law, this paper proposes an efficient and robust shape descriptor based on the perceptual stimulus model, called Weber's Law Shape Descriptor (WLSD). It is based on the theory that human perception of a pattern depends not only on the change of stimulus intensity, but also on the original stimulus intensity. Invariant to scale and rotation is the intrinsic properties of WLSD. As a global shape descriptor, WLSD has far lower computation complexity while is as discriminative as state-of-art shape descriptors. Experimental results demonstrate the strong capability of the proposed method in handling shape retrieval.

  • Because of its high energy density, the use of shape memory alloys(SMA) in designing microactuatiors is gaining much attention in recent years. Shape memory alloys can undergo a shape change at a low temperature with a small applied deformation force, and retain this deformation until they are heated, at which point they return to the original shape. This is called the shape memory effect(SME), and a plethora of alloys show this effect. Among them, TiNi-based alloys have relatively high electrical resistivity, which to develope helical-shape memory springs. These springs are used to develop fast protatonist/antagonist configuration actuators. The developed actuator has an actuation speed of 1 mm per 15 .approx. 20 ms and a minimum operating period of 2 sec.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to determine a new focal point and field distribution due to the shape deformation of reflector antenna by numerical method such as geometrical optics and the aperture field method. It is shown the 4 types deformations to be added into original shape of parabola antenna and offset antenna: linear, quadratic, cubic and hybrid distortion. These results can be applied to deformed reflector antenna in order to fit a focal point and radiation pattern.

  • When a input image is extensively magnified on the computer system, it is almost impossible to replicate the original shape because of mismatched coordinates system. In order to resolve the problem, the shape of the magnified image has been reconfigured using the bilinear interpolation method, low pass special filtering interpolation method and B-spline interpolation method. Ferguson curve interpolation method based on the CAD/CAM curve interpolation algorithm.
