Introduction : The causes of sudden sensorineural hearing loss have not been detemined with precision until recently, but viral infections and vascular insufficiencies, such as vascular spasm, occlusion of sludging of erythrocytes were considered as major factors. The treatment has not been determined with precision until recently. It is similar to dizziness(眩暈). sudden dcafncss(暴聾) and congestion-fire deafness(痰火聾) in Oriental Medicine. It is very rare that someone has sudden hearing loss and visit Oriental Medicine Clinic right that time. But we expect if they take a Oriental treatment on thc right time. more effective for their symptom. Subjects : Following conclusions were reached by measuring results of oricntal medical treatments for 40 patients who visited the clinic between January of 2000 and December of 2002, and received treatments continuously for more than 1 months of time. Methods : Among the selected 40 patients. 30 patients belong to Group Ⅰ, which consisted of patients who had already visited a general hospital prior to visiting this clinic, achieved no recovery at all from sudden deafness despite going through more than 5 days of hospitalized treatments of steroidal medications. Group Ⅱ was consisted of 10 patients of sudden deafness who did not experience any steroidal treatments from other hospital prior to the oriental medical treatment. Results and conclusion : According to differentiation of syndrome. among 30 patients of the Group Ⅰ. 21 were categorized as excess syndrome patients and remaining 9 as deficiency syndrome paticnts. Among 10 patients of For Group Ⅱ, 5 were excess syndrome patients and remaining 5 were deficiency syndrome patients. Among Group Ⅰ, recovery ratio of excess syndrome patients was 47.7$\%$ and deficiency syndrome patients was 44.4$\%$ adding up recovery ratio of the group to be 46.1$\%$. Among Group Ⅱ, recovery ratio of excess syndrome patients was 80$\%$ and deficiency syndrome patients was 100$\%$ adding up recovery ratio of the group to be 90$\%$. Oriental medical treatments are generally more effective(90$\%$ recovery ratio) for Sudden Deafness than steroidal treatments. Oriental medical treatments are almost equally effective for both excess syndrome patients and deficiency syndrome patients. However, steroidal treatments for excess syndrom patients(45$\%$ recovery ratio) is much less effective than deficiency syndrome patients(73$\%$ recovery ratio). This indicates that steroidal treatments should be applied selectively to deficiency syndrome patients if applied at all. Even for patients with sudden deafness which hospitalized steroidal treatments did not result in any recovery at all, oriental medical treatments were able to achieve 46.1$\%$ recovery ratio.

Objective : This study was performed to estimate the association between cigarette smoking and effect of oriental medical treatment in low back pain. Methods : We reviewed 40 male patients of low back pain, who were hospitalized at the Oriental Medical Hospital of Se-Myung University. 40 patients were divided into 2 groups(smokers, non-smokers) and effective scores of treatments were measured on age, symptom, etc. Result & Conclusion : Between smokers and non-smokers, statistically significant differences were not found in effective scores of treatments of low back pain, but in almost every non-smokers, they were higher than those of smokers. They seems to show that possibility of the association between cigarette smoking and effect of oriental medical treatment in low back pain.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was the collection of dietary and external treatments of atopic dermatitis and it's classification according to physical type. Methods : The author conducted a literature and Internet search in data. Results : We collected the generally used dietary and external treatments. These collected treatments are classified according to the following oriental medical categories; thermic and wet skin type, thermic and dry skin type, chill and wet skin type and chill and dry skin type. conclusion : Wemust use these treatments pertinently according to physical type.

Objectives : To examine the effects of the collaborative Oriental and Western medicine, we treated a gouty arthritis patient with acute inflammation and liver injury with a combination of Oriental and Western treatments. Methods : Acupuncture, Bangphungtongsung-San(Fangfengtongsheng-san)', 'Kangwhaljetong-Um(Qianghuochutong-yin)', and 'Sosiho-Tang(Xiaochaihu-tang) were offered to an acute gouty arthritis patient with NSAIDs, Corticosteroids and allopurinol. Laboratory data were observed for the duration of hospital days. Results : In spite of Oriental treatments, NSAIDs administration caused liver injury, but continuous Oriental treatments with small amount of Corticosteroids and allopurinol brought recovery of liver function and gouty arthritis. Confusion : Collaborative treatments of Oriental and Western medicine are better than independent Western treatment for gouty arthritis with acute inflammation and liver injury. Further studies will be required to ascertain the collaborative treatment with Oriental and Western medicine for gouty arthritis and other diseases.

Objectives The purpose of this case study is to report the effect of concurrent administration of Danguieumja-gagambang and external treatments on childhood psoriasis. Methods The subject is a child with psoriasis. This patient was treated with oriental herbal medicine (Danguieumjagagambang) and external treatments. The improvement of the skin condition is observed by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. Results After the treatment, the symptoms of psoriasis were relieved. PASI score of this child went down from 4.7 to 0. Conclusions This study showed that concurrent administration of Danguieumja-gagambang and external treatments can be an effective choice for psoriasis.

This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatments on the 4 patients with calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. The 4 patients were treated by cupping, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture on tender points of the greater tuberosity of humerus. The state of patients was measured by visual analog scale(VAS) and shoulder range of motion(ROM). After mean 3.25 times of treatments, the significant recovery of shoulder ROM was measured and the significant pain relief was seen as the average of VAS changed from 8.5 to 1. These results suggest that oriental medical treatments including cupping, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture are effective to improve the calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. However more rigorous study should be followed.

Purpose : Hysterectomy is the most common gynecologic operation in women. Recent research has been directed towards understanding the symptoms after hysterectomy. But the study for treating them was rarely investigated. The purpose of this study was to report a case associated with treatment of the post-hysterectomy syndrome. Methods : A 52-year-old woman, who suffered from headache, dizziness, indigestion, lumbargo, insomnia, hyposthenia et al after total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH), was enrolled in this study. She received oriental treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and dry cupping therapy for 8 days. Results : The symptoms after hysterectomy were markedly reduced by oriental treatments. Conclusion : The present study suggests that oriental treatments have a significant effect on the post-hysterectomy syndrome.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of the combination of Korean medicine therapy on elderly patients with delirium due to overdose of sedative-hypnotics. Methods: The patient was diagnosed with delirium, which occurred after an overdose of sedative-hypnotics. The patient received Korean Medicine treatment, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and psychotherapy, and other treatments. The evaluation variables to check the effectiveness of the interventions were the Korean Version of the Delirium Rating Scale-Revised-98 (K-DRS-R-98) Mini-Mental State Examination-Korean (MMSE-K) Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT). Results: During the hospitalization period, the K-DRS-R-98 score decreased from 31 to 4, MMSE-K score increased from 18 to 26. CDR score decreased from 2 to 0. MMT in the Right lower extremity was improved. Normal daily activities were possible. Conclusions: Combining Korean Medicine treatments, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, psychotherapy, and other treatments, may help alleviate delirium.

Objectives To research oriental medical treatments for diabetic nephropathy by literature study Methods We reviewed oriental medical book concerning the diabetic nephropathy. Results & Conclusions 1. The diabetic nephropathy has relation to edema, dizziness, exhaustion of strenght, obstruction and rejection among the transformations of emaciation and thirst. 2. The causes of diabetic nephropathy are dry heat caused congenital defect, mental depression and greasy diet damages liquid nutrients and thereafter Gi and Yang deficiency produces blood stagnation, dampness and phlegm-turbidity. 3. The medical treatments are invigorating Gi, promoting blood flow to remove blood stasis and removing dampness through diuresis. The frequently used herb are Radix Astragali, Poria, Fructus Corni, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, etc. and Dansam is meanigfull of all herbs for invigorating blood and dispelling blood stagnation.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to show the clinical effect of Korean Medical Treatments for Tinnitus with Sudden Sensory Neural Hearing Loss. Methods : The patient was treated by Korean Medical Treatments for 10weeks. The effect of treatments on tinnitus was measured with Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Korean Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(K-THI). And the effect of treatments on sudden hearing loss was measured by VAS. Results : VAS of Tinnitus was decreased from 10 to 3 points and K-THI score was decreased from 70 to 26 points. VAS of hearing loss was decreased from 9 to 8 points. Conclusions : Korean Medical Treatments are effective on Tinnitus.
