  • We in this paper design and implement a traditional korean medicine diagnosis system based on basic ontology. If doctors put the symptoms or tongues or pulses of a patient in the diagnosis system, they can be recommended for the diagnosis results. To support the doctors decision, the diagnosis system make the inference based on the basic ontology and compute the similarity between symptoms of patient and those of ontology. The diagnosis systems also provide the learning mechanism about diagnosis results which save the results in the ontology and reuse them in the next diagnosis. Thus, doctors can share their knowledge for the diagnosis by exchanging their ontology each other. In future, we will expand the knowledge of the basic ontology continuously so that doctors can get the more accurate diagnosis results. We also implement the prescription function and integrate it to the diagnosis system.

  • Background: A number of studies have identified the effect of Korean medicine treatment for oculomotor nerve palsy, but few have reported treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage. This paper reports two cases of oculomotor nerve palsy with ptosis and limitation of eye movement after subarachnoid hemorrhage whose conditions were improved by Korean medicine treatment. Methods: Two patients with ptosis and limitation of eye movement after subarachnoid hemorrhage were treated with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and pharmacoacupuncture. Clinical symptoms were measured as the distance of the interpalpebral fissure and eyeball movement (adduction, abduction). Results: After treatment, their clinical symptoms showed improvement. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment, including pharmacoacupuncture and electroacupuncture, could be adopted as a treatment method for oculomotor nerve palsy after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

  • After acupuncture needles were inserted on apkok(LI4) and Kokchi(LI11) accupoints, physiological changes induced by the varitions of 'Qi' were measured. The body temperature and pulse frequency were fromed to be decreased observed and we presumed that the needle insertion induced some changes of Qi in meridian and this seemed to be achieved by a certain process of Qi induction. We applied EAV, nervinemeter and pulse-taking machine which is widely used as oriental medicine instruments, to the same vounteers and observed the significant variations for each apparatus in spite of partial lack of reproducibility. In this paper, we described about the physical quantity measured by the medical appartatus and how it was related to the variation of Qi The proper conditions used for good oriental medicine instruments have also been suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to inspect trends of the paper of Korean medical treatment on Carbon Tetrachloride-induced Hepatotoxicity and try to establish the future direction for development of Korean herbal medicine. We reviewed 79 papers which had been published from 1981 to 2010 in journals published in Korea. According to these studies, Carbon Tetrachloride-induced hepato-celluar degeneration and necrosis induced to increase in serum aspartate amintransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ${\gamma}$-Glutamyl transferase (${\gamma}$-GTP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and albumin levels. In biochemical analyses, antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase in hepatic tissue were remarkably incresed by Carbon Tetrachloride treatment. We found that some of the herbal extracts have a protective effect against Carbon Tetrachloride-induced Hepatotoxicity. More studies of oriental medicinal herbs are required for developing a treatment of hepatotoxicity.

  • Many researchers are trying to acquire intellectual properties on the promising technologies for prior occupation in their area. For this, the number of patents as a result of researches is increasing. In spite of the tendency in research of oriental medicine, the results have been focused on research papers. In this paper, we have reported patents around the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine(KIOM) to find trends in patents in the field of oriental medicine. There are 211 Korea patents and 8 USA patents. Most of these patents are fouced on "medical" and "diagnosis" areas.

  • Yoshimasi Todo (吉益東洞), who thought that the books on herbal medicines are the reason for the complicated explanation of the effects of herbs, thought that the articles from Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases (傷寒論) and Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (金匱要略) are the only books that can identify the effects of herbs. He also thought that the practitioners from the later period have added too much on the original text, which led to his thought that the original text of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases (傷寒論) and Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (金匱要略) did not have the explanation that involves the theory of yin-yang(陰陽), the five phases(五行), and three yin and three yang(三陰三陽). From this, he investigated the standards of using the herbs in the Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (金匱要略) by comparing the articles. In this point of view, Yoshimasi Todo (吉益東洞) said that Poria Scleotium (茯笭) treats palpitations (悸) and 肉瞤筋惕. This meant the symptom of unvoluntary palpitations and the trembling of muscles with wrenching pain. Also, he thought that the symptom of Poria Scleotium (茯笭) in the formula of decoction is shown by the symptoms of dizziness, palpatations, vomiting, trembling of muscles, and cramps. This paper studies on the symptoms that seems close to the meaning of the symptom of Poria Scleotium (茯笭) that Yoshimasi Todo (吉益東洞) meant, which can be summarized to palpatations and trembling of muscles. I wish this paper is of help to those who study Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases (傷寒論), Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (金匱要略), and the medicine of Yoshimasi Todo (吉益東洞).

  • The medical and healthy paradigm is changing by various reasons such as improving of life quality, the limit of western medicine, demographic changes and so on. And the demand, interest and market size of traditional medicine(TM) and complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) are increasing continuously and there is a good traditional medicine called TKM(Traditional Korean Medicine) in Korea. TKM have differentiated characteristics like nature-friendly, systematic, preventive and personalized medicine from western medicine. TKM with these characteristics have possibility to increase national competitiveness and contribute to growth of economy. At this time, it is necessary to select key area of TKM R&D to increase competitiveness of TKM and to create new growth engine. In this paper, we suggest key area of TKM R&D through SWOT analysis, the analysis of world traditional medicine and expert's counsel. As a result, 3 key area and 10 specific fields of TKM R&D was selected, which they are 'the standardization for TKM technology and technique', 'the development of generic technology based on TKM' and 'the establishment of infrastructure for TKM information and material'. This study may contribute to make plan for TKM research and policy such as TKM middle and long term plan and TKM promotion plan.

  • Bioinformatics and medical informatics have moved to make its knowledge more systematically and computationally using ontology. These ontologies help querying ring and analyzing data and used to develop application in biomedical. However, no research about ontology of oriental medical exists. Thus, to maximize the power of transitional knowledge, it is necessary to construct the ontology for oriental medical. This paper compares the ontologies of bio and medic by an objective point of view to guide the construction of oriental medic ontologies.

  • Objectives : This paper examines how the Pi(脾) function was understood in the time of the Huangdineijing. Methods : The contents were analyzed and categorized through examining the verses within the Huangdineijing, followed by comparison with a recent publication on the topic. Results &Conclusions : According to the Huangdineijing, there are two major functions of the Spleen. One is producing and distributing Jing Qi from food, the other is managing the Qi cycle of the body. The former function could again be sub-categorized into the part focusing on production and that focusing on distribution. In the Huangdineijing Yanjiu Dacheng(黃帝內經硏究大成, Great Findings from the Study of Hungdineijing) the contents were mostly similar, with the exception of some parts.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to establish theoretical bases upon which to complement the clinical evidence in representative literature "Dongeuibokam(東醫寶鑑)" of Korean medicine. Methods: We searched applicable paragraphs about thermotherapy in "Dongeuibokam(東醫寶鑑)" and defined them as historical and theoretical bases of thermotherapy in Korean medicine. Results : Three paragraphs about thermotherapy are in "Yehyung(外形篇)" and "Jabbyung(雜病篇)" of "Dongeuibokam(東醫寶鑑)". These records to treat the disease of the internal organs and meridian are enough to explain historical and theoretical evidences. Conclusions : Although only three paragraphs are associated with thermotherapy, they mean that thermotherapy has been explained under the system of Korean medicine. It is necessary for more literatural study and clinical trials to be carried out to secure the evidence of physical therapies in Korean medicine.
