"Sikui-simgam ("食醫心鑑", Book for Alimentotherapist)" written by Jameun, a doctor of Tang (唐) in the 9th century, propagated alimentotherapy in Korea, China, and Japan for a long time. In this study, Sikui-simgam medical theories were studied and the medicinal ingredients and types of food therapy were analyzed to understand alimentotherapy characteristics. "Sikui-simgam" is the first food therapy formulary diverged from herbal therapy forms. Various ingredients from "Sikui-simgam" show the food culture of the Tang age and report much about cooking and cultural history. Many prescriptions in the books are the origins of present-day food culture; thus, they are important clues to understand the present food culture. This book also describes actual prescriptions in detail. Various types of prescriptions with different ingredients are unique characteristics of food therapy and show the various possibilities for food therapy prescriptions. The food therapy prescriptions of "Sikui-simgam" were designed for medical specialists, as the book contains doses and incompatibilities for food therapy. Such food therapy prescriptions were used to treat diseases, so they were used with strict standards.

Background Adherence to healthy diet acts as a key role to modify sedentary lifestyle in real life setting. Constitution type of traditional Korean medicine has been prediagnosed to risk factors of cardiometabolic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the associations between body composition and healthy eating status in Korean adults by their constitution type. Methods Of 4046 participants from Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study, Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort (KDCC) study were included for analysis. Demographic, health-related behaviors and Korean Medicine (KM) type were surveyed based on a general health-related questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and dietary factors by using Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) were assessed only in the half of the original participants. Results 50.8% of Taeeum was observed from eligible 1967 participants (66.7%, women). The highest KHEI score was observed in soyang group (52.0±0.3, p=0.006) compared to other two groups. In taeeum group, lower appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)(%)(Taeeum: 38.7±0.1 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 39.2±0.1, p < 0.05), and higher percent of body fat (PBF)(%) (Taeeum: 32.9±0.2 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 29.0±0.2, p < 0.05) by the lowest tertile (T1) of the KHEI score, respectively. When the KHEI score increased by 1 point in taeeum group, a positive relationship was observed, which increased by 0.015% of ASM, however, a negatively related to in which body fat mass (BFM) decreased by 0.022 kg and PBF decreased by 0.024%. Conclusion Customized nutritional management is required that could help maintaining physical health and diet by their constitution type.
Objectives Meal and nutrition are important lifestyle factors that affect maintenance and promotion of health status and are also associated with chronic diseases. In Sasang constitutional medicine, dietary behavior according to the characteristics of Sasang constitution (SC) types is a key component in health management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and quality of meals according to the SC. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 1,947 subjects surveyed in a community-based cohort called the Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study. Data were collected including demographic characteristics, Korea Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire, and nutrition quotient (NQ) for adults. We analyzed the differences in NQ grade and scores among three SC types: Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), and Soyangin (SY), by conducting chi-square and ANCOVA tests. Results The distribution of SC into TE, SE, and SY types was 43.1%, 25.2%, and 31.8%, respectively. The mean NQ score of all subjects was 53.4±8.6. There was a significant difference in the distribution of NQ grades and mean of NQ scores among SC types, including total and four sub-factors: balance, diversity, moderation, and dietary behavior. The TE type had the lowest score for the moderation factors in the crude model. The SE type showed lower NQ scores than the TE and SY types in all domains except moderation after adjusting for variables. Conclusions We found that dietary behaviors had to be distinct according to the SC types. These results elucidate why it is important to develop a customized dietary habit management program considering the SC types.

To accept folk remedies in view of oriental medicine and to use as one of social health materials, 1 have looked for the phase institution of folk remedies in the oriental medicine and their adopting method to the oriental medicine, on the basis of the present social-communicating situation, the degree of interest in folk remedies among people and oriental medicine doctors and the content of folk remedies in Dongyibogam(東醫寶鑑). The results are following; The researches of relative importance in the folk remedy's meaning of Dongyibogam show that the proper use can help disease cured, not by unconditional choice but by symptoms. The use of folk remedies are different from the prescription in the oriental medicine, as showing the type and ratio of folk remedies and prescriptions in Dongyibogam. When considering used materials, forms and time in the meaningful content of folk remedies in Dongyibogam, they established two categories. One is radical treatment on acute disease by short-term use. The other is slow treatment on chronic disease by long-term use. For wide application to people, they also had the prudent attitude to accept symptom-oriented treatment and tried to connect with syndrome which needed diagnosis as precisely as possible.

This paper investigates the attitudes of medical users toward Korean oriental medicine and traditional Chinese medicine and their future demand. The subjects are 404 university students both in Korea and in China. The items that were questioned in this paper were the attitudes toward Korean oriental medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, the experience of using the medicine, the reason they used the traditional medicine, the factors that made them satisfied with the medicine, and the future plan for using the traditional medicine. The reason the university students were selected as subjects was that they have more possibilities as future users of the traditional medicine. This paper show that Chinese students have more positive attitude toward the traditional medicine than Korean students. The Koreans' experience rate of using the traditional medicine was comparatively high and the subjects in both the countries used the western medicine for the symptoms of a cold and dental problems. For the illness of stomach, Korean and Chinese subjects used the traditional medicine and the western medicine half and half. This paper presented the subjects with the common 14 diseases that they can have and asked which medicine they will use when they have the diseases. The results of analysis indicate that the subjects tend to use different medical institution according to the diseases. The subjects in Korea and China selected different medical institution for the same disease. From the analysis of the questionnaire, it can be seen that there are some differences between Koreans and Chinese in using the medical institution, which results from the difference in medical culture and the relationship between the traditional medicine and medical users could be figured out.
The medical and healthy paradigm is changing by various reasons such as improving of life quality, the limit of western medicine, demographic changes and so on. And the demand, interest and market size of traditional medicine(TM) and complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) are increasing continuously and there is a good traditional medicine called TKM(Traditional Korean Medicine) in Korea. TKM have differentiated characteristics like nature-friendly, systematic, preventive and personalized medicine from western medicine. TKM with these characteristics have possibility to increase national competitiveness and contribute to growth of economy. At this time, it is necessary to select key area of TKM R&D to increase competitiveness of TKM and to create new growth engine. In this paper, we suggest key area of TKM R&D through SWOT analysis, the analysis of world traditional medicine and expert's counsel. As a result, 3 key area and 10 specific fields of TKM R&D was selected, which they are 'the standardization for TKM technology and technique', 'the development of generic technology based on TKM' and 'the establishment of infrastructure for TKM information and material'. This study may contribute to make plan for TKM research and policy such as TKM middle and long term plan and TKM promotion plan.

This study was aimed to review the trend of case reports of neuropsychiatry disease. The case reports were collected by retrieving Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry and analyzing period were from 1990 to 2010. We analyzed them for publish year, research institution, patients, sorts of diseases, pattern identification diagnosis, instrument, treatment period, sorts of treatments, and treatment with western medicine. We analyzed 142 case reports and there were many kinds of neuropsychiatry diseases and instruments that were evaluated the process. The reserchers used various treatment with oriental medicine. However, the number of case reports have decreased since the year of 2008. Most of the research institutions were university and general oriental medical hospital and the portion of private hospitals was only 2.11%. For the development of practical clinical trial of oriental medicine, we needs more qualifying case report. We hope more reserchers for psychiatry disease of oriental medicine will be interested in the publication of case report and this will serve to produce advance of oriental medicine.
This project is planned to grasp the present situation of traditional medicine part in our country and to study protection method about this by the intellectual property which is the international concerning point recently. Through this, we will be able to devise means to deal with protection method of traditional medicine being developed by WIPO now. In 1 detail project, we investigated the situation of traditional medicine in our country through various collecting methods for excavation of oriental treatment technique and herb medicine which is worth protecting. With it, we sorted again into 56 kinds of 11 parts through analysis of validity in the way of oriental medicine. And we tried to link this up 2 detail project which is about legal and institutional guarantee concerning protection. furthermore, we tried to find approach ways for security of objectivity into 4 steps with the example of model disease. we could complete practical classification of traditional medicine in our country. In 2 detail project, we studied the protection method by the intellectual property through research result in 1 detail project. For this, we observed an outline of the intellectual property including a patent application analysis in folk traditional medicine part, and problems of traditional medicine protection and world trend by traditional knowledge protection tendency and the patent law In domestic traditional medicines, the aspects unprotectable with the patent law now were remained. So, we suggested supplementary plan. And we also suggested the freedom of utilization between traditional medicine possession countries (in-situ utilization) and the demand compensation payment for a third country (ex-situ utilization) in connection with international movement.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is finding tendencies of diagnosis and treatment of the traffic accidental patients. Methods : We reviewed and analyzed all theses published by Korean research institution. And these theses were classified by year, field of study, reviewed by focusing on diagnosis and evaluation, treatment type. Results : 1. 72 articles were published since 1993. 2. Classified by the major field of study, the korean academy of oriental rehabilitation medicine accounted for 33 papers. 3. 7-Zone-Diagnostic system and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory were studied mostly. 4. To add pharmacopuncture or chuna treatments are effective. 5. Traffic accidental patients get satisfaction about Oriental medicine therapy but methods of medical treatment are restrictively. Conclusions : Oriental medicine treatment is the effective way to cure traffic accidental sequela, but we need further studies.
Background According to the Sasang constitutional medicine, eating habits according to the characteristics of Sasang Constitution (SC) types affect management of chronic diseases and health conditions. The aim of this study is to identify the association between eating habits, such as breakfast, eating frequency, and energy intake, according to SC, and quality of life. Method This study is a cross-sectional study of people aged 33 to 55 years, sampled by stratification based on population distribution. The SC types were classified into Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), and Soyangin (SY) using a structured questionnaire (KS-15). Items examined regarding eating habits were whether the subjects had breakfast; the frequency of eating such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after-dinner snacks; and energy intake surveyed using a food frequency questionnaire. As for quality of life, SF-12, which is widely used worldwide to assess health conditions, was utilized. A regression analysis was conducted on the relations between eating habits according to SC and quality of life. Results The SC distribution of the 3,895 subjects was 47% for TE, 22% for SE, and 31% for SY. The scores indicating quality of life differed for TE and SY depending on whether they ate breakfast and eating frequency groups, and those of SE varied depending on levels of energy intake. A regression analysis having adjusted all covariates demonstrated for TE a positive relation between the eating frequency of three times per day or more (compared to 1.5 to 3 meals per day) and quality of life (B=1.365, p<0.001). For SE, there was a negative association between low energy intake (compared to adequate energy intake) and quality of life (B=-1.642, p=0.004). Meanwhile, no relation was found between eating habits and quality of life for SY. Conclusion This study identified the association between eating habits according to SC types and quality of life. For TE, it was found to be important to eat evenly dispersed adequate amounts as opposed to overeating or binging at once. For SE, adequate energy intake affected good quality of life. This study suggests that eating habits based on SC improve quality of life, and health management customized for each constitution should be performed in the future through proper eating habits.
