  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is comparison of clinical treatment outcome between oriental medicine group and oriental-western medicine group about Bell's palsy. Methods : We measured the facial palsy changes of the patients who were admitted for Bell's palsy in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dong-eui medical center from 07-01-2003 to 07-12-2004. Bell's palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was treated by Oriental medicine treatment. The other group(B group) was treated by Oriental-Western medicine treatment. The effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : B group was marked more higher than A group in treatment outcome. We discovered that it is significant differences between two groups after 1 week and after 2 week in treatment stage. Conclusion : These results provided that B group was more effective than A group in treatment of Bell's palsy. For clearly comparing the effect of Oriental medicine treatment and Oriental-Western medicine treatment on Bell's palsy, more numbers of sample and longer duration of treatment are needed.

  • The deterioration of neurologic symptoms, like disc rupture or cauda equina syndrome within short time caused by abdominal pressure, seems to be an uncommon event. We experienced a man who had a sudden deterioration to cauda equina syndrome for a day. We presume that the reason is the increase of abdominal pressure by coughing. He had also undergone to repetitive minute damage after degenerative condition. Therefore, doctors and patients should be aware about degenerative state, possibility of minute damage, and be careful to its cause like coughing.

  • We made a comparative study, A patient who had suffered dizziness and ataxia took Hyungbangsabaek-san(荊防瀉白散) at first and next took Hyungbangdojeock-san(荊防導赤散). He was diagnosed as a Soyangin suffering chest knotting syndrome(結胸證) by Sasang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) and took two kinds of herbs in a row. We observed his phase of dizziness and ataxia with the conditions of stool and urine excavation, pink eye, sweating, and tongue color and tongue coating. When he took Hyungbangdojeock-san these conditions improved more than when he took the other one and his dizziness and ataxia also improved. Hyungbangdojeock-san was more useful when the severity of the disease was shallower and he had more exterior syndromes than Hyungbangsabaek-san.

  • The object of this study was to investigate the immune-enhancing effects of Chlorella vulgaris (CV) on a deteriorated immune function by a protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) diet. Unicellular algae, CV were used as a biological response modifier. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed for 15 days with standard diet or a PEM diet, which is associated with decreased host immune defense. After 8 days, mice in the PEM diet group were orally administered by 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 g/kg body weight of CV or distilled water. Nutritional parameters, and interferon (IFN)-$\gamma$ levels were significantly increased in the blood serum of the CV (0.15 g/kg)-treated group (29.6$\pm$2.8 pg/mL) compared to the non-treated PEM group (4.1$\pm$0.4 pg/mL, p<0.05). In addition, cell proliferation and production of cytokines were investigated via a CV (0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/mL) treatment using a human T cell line MOLT-4 cell. The CV treatment (1 mg/mL) significantly increased the production of both IFN-$\gamma$ and interleukin (IL)-2 (51.3$\pm$3.4 and 285.9$\pm$18.8 pg/mL, respectively) compared to the control (51.3$\pm$3.4 and 442.6$\pm$14.3 pg/mL, respectively), but did not affect the production of IL-4. These results suggest that CV may be useful in improving the immune function.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatments in one patient with traumatic thigh subcutaneous hematoma by traffic accident. Methods : The patient was treated by acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture and cupping for 3 months. Results : After treatments, VAS(visual analog scale) score changed from 10 to 0. MR Imaging showed that the size of subcutaneous hematoma has decreased from $5{\times}11{\times}5.8cm$ to $2.4{\times}3.2{\times}2.6cm$. And the palpation results also showed that the size of subcutaneous hematoma has gotten smaller. Conclusions : Our study suggests that oriental medical treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture and cupping may be effective in traumatic subcutaneous hematoma. More cases of controlled treatments are needed to define the effect of oriental medical treatments for traumatic subcutaneous hematoma.

  • UL-syndrome(鬱證) is a syndrome of emotional depression and various physical symptoms generally due to chronic psychological stress, without constitutional abnormality. These are cases of female patients suffering from headache, chest discomfort, heart burning, insomnia, dyspepsia, anorexia, fatigue and some other minor symptoms due to chronic stress. We diagnosed these cases as UL-syndrome and treated them with oriental medicine, specifically Gamisoyosan(加味逍遙散). This paper describes the symptoms that the patients suffered, the treatment used, and identifies stages in the development of UL-syndrome, and suggests a stage in which Gamisoyosan is efficacious.
