  • Objectives : Hemiplegic shoulder pain is one of the common sequelae of stroke. Although many different methods of treatment are applied, none have yet been proved to be effective. In this study we assessed the effectiveness of bee venom in patients with shoulder pain after stroke. Methods : This study was a double blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. All subjects received either 0.6 ml bee venom injection (venom:saline = 1:10000) or 0.6ml physiological saline solution (placebo) at three acupoints. The effectiveness was assessed by visual analogue scale, pain rating score, Fugl-Meyer assessment and passive external rotation. Results : There were 24 patients in the venom group and 22 patients in the placebo group. The venom group5,hewed more effectiveness in VAS and PRS than the placebo group. Conclusions : This study suggests that bee venom injection has significant analgesic effect on hemiplegic shoulder pain. Further study based on multi-centers, larger population, and long term 1311ow-up is needed to confirm this suggestion.

  • Objectives: This case study examined the effects of treatment with traditional Korean medicine on a central post-stroke pain patient, who had impingement syndrome of the right shoulder. Methods: The patient received traditional Korean medical treatments, including acupuncture, warm-needling, moxibustion, and cupping, throughout the treatment period, and extracorporeal shock-wave therapy and physical therapy for part of the treatment period. The effects of treatments were measured with a manual muscle test (MMT), numerical rating scale (NRS), range of motion (ROM), and gait staging index (self-invented). Results: The clinical symptoms of the patient were improved considerably after the complete treatment. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medicine may be effective for treatment of central post-stroke pain in patients with impingement syndrome.

  • Objectives: This study reports on the efficacy of using Korean medical treatment for suspected gastric ulcer. Methods: We treated a patient with suspected gastric ulcer using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy). We evaluated the results using a numerical rating scale (NRS) to measure abdominal pain. The degree of gastrointestinal symptoms was also evaluated using the Korean Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (KGSRS). The generic health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) scale. Results: The NRS and EQ-5D scale scores were improved after the treatments. The change in the KGSRS scores showed that the patient's abdominal pain was relieved. Conclusions: The results of this case study suggest that Korean medicine therapies may be effective in the treatment of suspected gastric ulcer.

  • Objectives : This report intended to estimate effects of Jung-an acupuncture on the acquired torticollis caused by muscle contraction. Methods : The patients were treated by Jung-an acupuncture, herb medication and Physical treatment daily. The improvement of the patients was judged by Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale(TWSTRS), Tsui's score and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results : After 7 days of treatment, the 2 patients' neck pain and cervical movement were improved. Also, TWSTRS score, Tsui's score and VAS were all reduced. Conclusions : As the Jung-an acupuncture's theological base is organized with meridian theory and myofacial release therapy, We considered the Jung-an acupuncture is effective not only for the skin disease but also for the muscle problem such as torticollis.

Methods : This study was carried out on 60 year-old female patient who suffered from severe hematuria. We diagnosed a severe hematuria patient after ureterolith lithotripsy as kidney deficiency and blood deficiency pattern in the symptom-differentiation system of Korean medicine and applied herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion to the patient. Results : After Korean medical treatment, we observed improvement of the symptom process by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), hematologic findings and urinalysis. Blood count of blood and urine had been in the normal range, and NRS of three symptoms had dropped below 0.5. Conclusions : We concluded that Korean medical treatment was an effective treatment for a hematuria patient after ureterolith lithotripsy.

  • Objectives: This study was aimed to establish the clinical features of the patients suffering from hyperhidrosis, who are willing to visit Oriental clinics. Methods: Forty-six patients with primary hyperhidrosis were enrolled in this study classification, body part of perspiration and its severity, and constitutional differentiation were analyzed. Results: 85.1% of patients were 10 to 39 years old. The body part most complained of hyperhidrosis was the hands and feet at 50%. The portion of Teaeumin, Soumin, and Soyangin was 56.6% 21.1%, and 21.7% respectively. Soumin specifically showed a higher frequency of palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis as 90%. The average score of symptoms was $5.1{\pm}1.7$ by a 10-point self- reporting numeric rating scale (NRS). No statistical difference of NRS score was observed regarding gender, Sasang classification, or hyperhidrosis region. Conclusions: This study provides an overview of hyperhidrosis patients visiting an Oriental clinic, and will be helpful in establishing a strategy for the Korean medicine (KM)-based therapeutic development.
