Methods : 46 patients were treated from November 2011 to April 2012 in Oriental Obesity Center, Dong-eui Medical Center. They were measured change of body compositions by bioelectrical impedance analysis every 2~3 weeks and 27 patients out of 46 were checked body compositions every 2 weeks. 46 and 27 patients were divided into two or three groups according to BMI, menopause, obesity treatment experience, age, treatment period. We compared before and after treatment body compositions. Results : Body compositions, except edema index were significantly reduced. Abdominal Visceral Fat(AVF) was significantly reduced in Obese group. Body Weight(BW), BMI, Body Fat(BF), Body Fat Percetage(BFP), Abdominal Visceral Fat Level(AVFL), Abdominal Visceral Fat(AVF), Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat(ASF) were significantly reduced in non-menopause group(43 female patients). But in 26 female patients out of 27, there were no significantly differences between groups in menopause. There were no significantly differences between groups in obesity treatment experience. But in 27 patients, BMI and AVF were significantly reduced in non-experience group and AVFL was significantly reduced in experience group. BW, BMI, BF, BFP, VAF, ASF were significantly reduced in younger age group. But in 27 patients, BW and Muscle were significantly reduced in younger age group. BMI, BF, BFP, Edema, AFVL, Abdominal Visceral Fat Area(AVFA), AVF, ASF were significantly reduced in longer treatment period group. Conclusion : The BF, BMI, BF, BFP, Muscle, AVFL, AVFA, AVF, ASF were almost decreased significantly. It resulted that the effects of oriental medical therapy in obesity was positive. • The treatment of obesity is increasingly becoming important to effective medical treatment, especially in case involving a degradation of the lower joints. A recent case placed two osteoarthritic obese patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery in a regiment of herbal diet. Alter 3-5 months of receiving this oriental treatment, the patients not only lost weight, but also showed significant reduction of joint inflammation and pain. It is true that obese patients with lower limb or osteoarthritis who have undergone normal obesity treatment regularly for 5 years or more will find the treatment becomes less effective over times. However, for patients suffering from lower limb pain or osteoarthristis, oriental obesity treatment, on the whole was effective in decreasing five key areas(5D). For this reason, it is necessary for oriental medicine to be given further study and consideration as an effective treatment of obesity.

  • Object : Waist circumference(WC), waist-hip ratio(WHR), waist-stature ratio(WSR), and body mass index(BMI) are commonly used for evaluating obesity. This Research were done to determine what is more sensitive obesity indexes(WC, WHR, WSR, BMI) Correlated with body composition such as body fat mass, body fat(%), visceral fat area, and fat free mass. And what is more sensitively correlated obesity indexes with % changes of body composition during weight reduction treatment. Methods : This clinical retrospective research were carried out 127 cases of female obese outpatients with weight reduction treatment during 1 month. Bioelectrical impedence analysis(for body composition) and body size(for anthropometric obesity indexes) were estimated in pre-treatment and post-treatment to evaluate the obesity indexes. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to select useful obesity index. Result & Conclusion : BMI is useful index for diagnosis and evaluation of obesity. WSR is sensitively correlated with visceral fat area and body fat(%). So, WSR is useful index for evaluating abdominal obesity and risk factors of metabolic syndrome. WC is correlated with both body fat mass and fat free mass. WHR is not optimal for diagnosis and evaluation of obesity.

  • Based on the fact that obesity is a complicated disease, we must treat obesity in a holistic way, but psychological factors are usually neglected in the clinical field. Oriental Medicine is basically holistic and psychosomatic, however, there are very few psychotherapy approaches in Oriental Medical treatment. In this review Oriental Medicine psychotherapy is outlined and a new model for oriental psychotherapy for the treatment of obesity is introduced. This program has a multi dimensional approach that includes behavioral, cognitive and spiritual components. The behavioral component relates to the discipline of diet and exercise. The cognitive aspect focuses on the mind. The third and possibly the most important component deals with one's spirit and awareness of their true self. This program is called "Yangsung" which means "Finding and raising one's true self."
