Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy of using oriental medical treatment(herb-medicine, acupuncture) with Melonix Calyx Vomiting Therapy for atypical facial pain. Methods : We experienced two cases of atypical facial pain treated with oriental medical treatment(herb-medicine, acupuncture) and Melonix Calyx Vomiting Therapy(MCVT). MCVT is a traditional treatment, which induces vomiting by eating Melonix Calyx powder with water. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we used the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Scale(PRS). Result : After using MCVT with oriental medical treatment, VAS, PRS and clinical symptoms of 2 patients were improved remarkably. Conclusion : This study suggests that using MCVT with oriental medical treatment is effective on atypical facial pain.

Methods : We experienced one cases of trigeminal neuralgia treated with oriental medical treatment and melonis Calyx Vomiting Therapy. MCVT is a traditional treatment, which induces vomiting by eating melonis Calyx powder with water. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we used the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and sleeping time. Results : After using MCVT with oriental medical treatment, VAS, sleeping time and clinical symptoms of the patient were improved remarkably. Conclusions : This study suggests that using MCVT with oriental medical treatment is effective on trigeminal neuralgia.

Objectives : Polyneuropathies are diseases of multiple peripheral nerves. They are usually characterized by symmetrical, bilateral distal motor and sensory impairment with a graded increase in severity distally. It is generally regarded that the natural courses are poor, so we wanted to study the effects of Oriental medical treatment on a patient with polyneuropathy. Methods : We treated by conservative Oriental medical treatment a woman of 68 years who was diagnosed as a polyneuropathy and was hospitalized at Seoul Oriental Hospital, Kyungwon University, from 12th Mar. to 31st May, 2003. Changes of functional disability were checked by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS), muscle atrophy was checked by measuring circumference of the thighs, calves, arms, and sensory impairment was checked by a sensory test. Results : 1. Functional disability caused by motor impairment was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment 2. Muscle atrophy was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment 3. Sensory impairment was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment Conclusion : We treated a patient who was diagnosed with polyneuropathy for over 80 days and recorded good effects of Oriental medical treatment on polyneuropathy.

Objectives : This case series aims to report the efficacy of using oriental medical treatment with Melonis Calyx Vomiting Therapy for Hwa-Byung. Methods : Patients were diagnosed with Hwa-Byung through Hwa-Byung Diagnostic interview schedule (HBDIS). They were treated with Oriental medical treatment (Acupncture, Herb-medication) and Melonis Calyx Vomiting Therapy (MCVT). MCVT is a traditional treatment, which induces vomiting by eating Melonis Calyx powder with water. We used VAS score and Scott scale for the symptoms of patients and IOMEHB (instrument of oriental medical evaluation for Hwa-Byung), BDI, STAI for the psychological conditions of the patients. Results : After treatment, the chief complaint and other symptoms of Hwa-Byung have improved. The scores of IOMEHB, BDI, and STAI have decreased. Conclusions : This result suggests that using MCVT with Oriental medical treatment have a positive efficacy for Hwa-Byung.

Objectives This study is for comparing the results in two groups of using Oriental medical treatment only with using Oriental-Western medical treatment together to shoulder pain patients. Methods 49 shoulder pain patients who participated in the clinical study both at the Bukpyeoung Haemalkeun Oriental Medical Clinic and at the Bukpyeoung Medical Clinic in Donghae city were classified 2 groups. Group A was treated with Oriental medical therapy only and group B was treated with Oriental-Western medical treatment together. They have been treated 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Results After 1, 2 and 4 weeks of each treatment, the scores of the two groups in 'Subjective symptoms of shoulder pain', 'Indisposition index of every day life', 'Shoulder pain and disability index', 'Visual analog scale' became signific antly lower than those before treatment. Conclusion Treatment of group B was better than treatment of group A but, there was no significant difference in therapeutic action between two groups.

Objectives This study to investigate the effect of oriental medical treatment including moxa bucket moxibustion on children with nocturnal enuresis. Methods We treated five cases of enuretic children with oriental medical treatment like moxa bucket moxibustion on Gwanwon(CV4) at every cases and acupuncture, TDP, herbal medicine at some cases. To investigate relapse, we followed up by telephone at least about 3 months after the end of the therapy. Results After the treatment, the number of enuresis before and after the treatment were compared. The number was decreased by 67% or more all cases. Conclusions According to the result, oriental medical treatment including moxa bucket moxibustion is considered to be effective on the nocturnal enuresis and further study is needed with more cases.

Objectives : This study is designed for trend analysis of oriental medicine treatment for visual impairment. Methods : Research studies related to objectives were gathered through OASIS, KTKP, PUBMED with keywords such as "visual impairment", "myopia", "hyperopia", "presbyopia", "astigmatism" and analyzed. Results : As a result of searching domestic and overseas research on oriental medical treatment for visual impairment, 7 domestic research papers and 11 overseas research papers have been selected. Among those research papers, 15 of those are studies related to childhood or juvenile myopia. Acupuncture, ear acupuncture, herb medicine, periocular massage, eye muscle exercise and habit correction are used as treatment methods for visual impairment. 14 out of 17 research papers which mentioned treatment effect of oriental medicine reported oriental treatment of visual impairment is effective. Conclusions : Various types of oriental medical treatment could be effective in treating visual impairment. Thus, related in-depth research must be proceeded.

Objectives : This study is to research the trend of the oriantal medical treatment for tinnitus and to establish the hereafter direction for the study on oriantal medical treatment for tinnitus. Methods : We reviewed the domestic articles published last eleven years(2000- 2010). Results : We have searched 21 articles in 5 journals of korean oriental medical ophthalmology &dermatology, korean acupuncture & moxibustion, korean oriental medicine, oriental physiology & pathology, sasang constitutional medicine. 1. There were the most research done 2006. They have 5 articles. In other years there were 3 or less articles. 2. The pattern of study was as follow: the consideration of documents were 5, clinical trials were 6, case studies were 8 and the others were 2. the rate of case studies were increased. 3. After mid 2000s, there were more studies of new research method appearing. Conclusions : The oriental medical treatment already effective for tinnitus. But we need more studies about various kind of oriental medical treatment for tinnitus.

The external treatment of internal diseases was first recorded in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經), and two hundred and fifty odd cases were found in the Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) and Oechisusebang(外治壽世方). Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) is a technical book devoted to explaining materia media as well as the external treatment of internal diseases. Oechisusebang(外治壽世方) is also a technical book, which make 36 references to the disease patterns of internal medicine. The medicinals employed as external treatment of internal diseases are grouped into 300 classes. These medicinals do not set limits to trees and plants but also uses birds and beasts, reptiles, grains, feces and urine, soil, stone etc., applied to various disease patterns. This study researched the medical texts in order to treat the disease patterns of internal medicine.

This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of trigger point needling and oriental medical treatment to shoulder pain patients in stroke sequelae with three aspects of pain and range of motion, muscle strength. Trigger point needling was applied to 3 patients on supraspinatus, infraspinatus, deltoid, subscapularis muscle. For evaluating treatment, visual analog scale(VAS), passive range of motion(PROM), muscle strength evaluation(MSE) were checked. After treatment, VAS score of 1 cases were decreased. PROM of 1 case was improved and MSE of 2 cases were improved slightly. These results suggest that trigger point needling and oriental medical treatment were effective on shoulder pain patients in stroke sequelae and it is necessary to research more case with shoulder pain in stroke sequelae.
