  • 1) Objective External treatments have various curative effects. So it had been used to cure various patients. But, it has a limited sphere of application in the present South Korea. Therefore we would like to bring out its sphere of application and detailed method in the oriental medicine classics. 2) Conclusions From long time ago people have used external treatment to cure various disease. According to the ${\lceil}Nei-Jing{\rfloor}$, hot compress therapy, fumigation therapy and bathing therapy had been used to cure blockage syndrome, muscle disease, carbuncle and cellulitis. Thereafter, a sphere of external treatment had gradually enlarged. (1) After all its sphere had included dermatologic, psychologic, internal, ophthalmic, otolaryngologic, obstetrics, gynecologic, pediatric and surgical diseases. (2) External treatment methods have contained hot compress therapy, fumigation therapy, bathing therapy, application therapy, medication bag therapy, medication plug therapy, medication massotherapy, aroma therapy and so on. (3) Medication types of external treatment have contained ointment, juice, infusion, powder, suppository and so on.

  • Recently, not a few study of the Ki-gong therapy, but that is in the point of the view in Taoism and Ki itself. So, it thought that the study in comparison Ki-gong(Taoism) theraphy to Oriental Medicine is insufficient. In this condition, many side effect on Ki-gong therapy are caused by the Ki-gong therapist without qualification. And I thought much of that there are manu description of the Ki-gong therapy and the side effect in the body on the book written Ki-gong, and that there are many relation the Ki-gong therapy without medical experience. Them I give a report of the result that study of the Side effect on Ki-gong therapy. The results were as follows ; In Ki-gong therapy; 1. The side effect is caused by the Ki-gong therapy without harmonized medical experience. 2. In the training of Ki-gong, Body reaction is to classify normal reaction and abnormal reaction. 3. The side effect on Ki-gong therapy is to classify grade I, grade II and grade III. 4. The medical treatment of the Ki-gong therapy's side effect have to use the Oriental Medicine and the Ki-gong therapy by medical experienced therapist.

  • Tremor is a rhythmic, involuntary muscular contraction characterized by oscillations (to-and-fro movements) of a part of the body. Essential tremor is a 6-8 Hz tremor that is of variable amplitude. It is aggravated by posture and movement and relieved by rest and alcohol. Most affected part are the arms, head and vocal apparatus. The purpose of this study is to show a case of tremor patient with essential tremor improved by oriental medical treatment. The patient was 71-year-old woman who featured essential tremor and at the same time complained general body weakness, nausea, and anorexia. She was treated by oriental medicine with acupuncture, herb medication, and Korean psychotherapy; Eejeong-byunki, Jiun-goron. The features of essential tremor was reduced after taking oriental medical therapy. This result suggested that the oriental medical therapy can be effective for treating essential tremor.

  • Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Dong-Si acupuncture therapy, on the stroke patients with dysphagia. Method: We studied three selected stroke patients with dysphagia who could follow instructions. The patients were treated with Dong-Si acupuncture (Jokch'eonkeum, Jokokeum) with Dong-Qi therapy for two weeks. We evaluated the effects by AHSA scale, VAS and MBI. Results & conclusion: Dysphagia was improved in all of three cases after treatment. But more clinical & scientific trials are expected to follow this study.

  • Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oriental medicine therapy on a hyperthyroid patient. Methods : The clinical data was analyzed on a patient with hyperthyroidism whose main symptoms were burning sensation, sweaty hands, fatigue, and palpitation etc. The patient was admitted from November 16, 2003 and remained until December 6, 2003. She was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxa therapy. Results : After treatment, improvement was seen in burning sensation, sweaty hands, fatigue and palpitation etc. Conclusion: The study suggests that oriental medicine therapy is effective on the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

  • This study was progressed for oriental medical care of neonates by fetal toxicosis removal therapy, and the results as follows: 1. The purpose of fetal toxicosis removal therapy : It removes dirty blood in neonatal mouth and prevents diseases. 2. Kinds of fetal toxicosis removal therapy : Radix Glycyrrhizae(甘草), Rhizoma Coptidis(黃連), Cinnabaris-Mel(朱蜜), Calculus Bovis(牛黃), Sojae Semen Praepartum, Juice of Semen Allii Tuberosi(非汁) and mercury(汞粉). 3. A period of fetal toxicosis removal therapy : At birth, 3rd day or so, one week or so, after umbilical omission. 4. Methods of fetal toxicosis removal therapy: Purgative therapy(下法) and Emetic therapy(吐法).

Clinical Study about Patients in Intensive Care Unit at an Oriental Medical Hospital - Focused on Main Disease and Complications - (한방병원 중증치료실 입원 환자의 임상적 분석 - 주 질환 및 합병증 위주로 -)

  • Objectives : This study was designed to quantify the characteristics, main diagnosis and complications in the intensive care unit (ICU) at an Oriental Medical Hospital. Methods : The medical records of 44 patients admitted to the ICU at Kyunghee Oriental Medical Hospital between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011 were reviewed. Basic characteristics of patients, admission channel, main diagnosis, east-western medical therapy, mortality, and complications were investigated retrospectively based on medical notes. Results : 1. The total number of patients was 44. Males were 63.6%, females 36.3%. Average admission days was 15.9. 2. The most frequent age group is eighties, 38.6%. 3. The most frequent disease is cerebrovascular disease, 61.3%. 4. The medical therapy done after admission to ICU was intubation. Central vein insertion was performed next, followed by Foley's catheter insertion, ventilator, tracheostomy, nasogastric intubation, and thoracentesis in order. The proportion of Oriental medical treatment provided to the patients of ICU was as follows: herbal medication only 6.8%; herbal medication plus acupuncture 31.8%; herbal medication, acupuncture electro-acupuncture, plus subcutaneous acupuncture 2.3%; and none 27.3%. 5. The number of cases of complications occurred since ICU admission was 18. The most frequently observed complication was infection, including 6 cases of pneumonia and 4 cases of urinary tract infection. Conclusions : We suggest that ICUs of Oriental medical hospitals need to be managed effectively to treat diseases including cerebrovascular disease and prevent complications.

A Clinical Report about Hiccup and Eructation from Emotional Stress (칠정(七情) 자극 후 발생한 해역(咳逆).희기(噫氣) 환자 치혐 1례)

  • This case show that emotional stress and wekness of gastrointestinal function occur a chronic hiccup and eructation(during 3 months), oriental medical therapy can cure completely this symptom. Seven emotional stress(anger, delight, sadness, thinking, worry, fear, horror) occur various pathologic changes. Hiccup is caused by CNS, psychologic, thoracic, abdominal factor etc. In oriental medicine, GI trouble regarded as a very importent factor that occur hiccup and eructation. Besides, emotional stress is a very important factor as well. This patient have an introvert personality ordinary times. One day, she had a miscarriage by hers husband's assault. After that time, she suffered from very serious GI trouble(dyspepsia, epigastric pain, anorexia). And then hiccup, eructation, weight loss(10kg/3months) is occured. This patient diagnosed only gastritis. This symptom did not stop during 3 months, regardless of western medical therapy(some western drugs medication, fluid supply etc). After oriental medical therapy(herb medicine;Yukunjatang, acupuncture;CV12, CV6, S36, CV17, H7, SP6, P6, moxibustion;VI2, CV6, S36, negative therapy;back area and traditional oriental medical psychotherapy;ventilation, support, desensitization and family interview) put in operation during 15 days, patient completely recover from hiccup, eructation and anxiety disorders.

The Suggestion on the Herbal Bathing and the Pinda Manual Therapy with Herbs for Obesity Patients according to Sasang Constitutions. (비만 환자의 사상체질에 따른 입욕법 및 핀다요법 적용에 관한 제안)

  • Objectives This study is to suggest the herbal bathing and the manual therapy with herbs for obesity patients according to the Sasang constitutional medicine. Methods In this study, first, we found the books, web sites and papers about bathing. And also we classified the herbs those are used each therapy according to the Sasang constitutional medicine theory. Results and Conclusions: We make good used of salts, sulfur or herbal agents inserted into a bath, when we are bathing. And we knew that "The Pinda manual therapy" is a therapy with medical herbs in the West. The Pinda manual therapy is a fomentation therapy with wrapped in cloth and steamed medical herbs. According to Sasang constitutional right to bath in each prescription were as follows. Taeeumin: Taeeumin Galgeunhaegi-tang. / Soyangin: Soyangin Hyeongbangpaedok-san. / Soeumin: Gunggwihyangso-san, Soeumin Kwakhyangjeonggi-san. / Taeyangin: Ogapijangchuk-tang. And also, by Sasang constitution, applicable herbs to the Pinda therapy were as follows. Taeeumin: Seokchangpo, Wonji, Gobon, Gamguk, Sokdan, Wiryeongseon.. / Soyangin: Hyeonggae, Bangpung, Bakha, Ganghwal, Dokhwal. / Soeumin: Kwakhyang, Soyeop, Danggwi, Cheongung, Sesin, Jinpi. / Taeyangin: Ogapi, Mokgwa, Nogeun, Gyomaek. It will be need to more study for effective clinical applications.

The Clinical Studies on the Hand Paresthesia of Patients with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (흉곽출구증후군 환자의 손저림에 대한 임상적 연구)

  • Objective : This study was aimed to investigate the effective treatment for patients with thoracic outlet syndrome. Method : This study was carried out to established the clinical criteria of thoracic outlet syndrome. We collected and analyzed the data of patients had come to the GyeonWoo Oriental Medical Clinic after traffic accidents from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011. The patients with thoracic outlet syndrome were treated with acupuncture, chuna therapy for 4 weeks. Visual Analog Scale(V.A.S.) was used as the tools determining the effects of oriental medical treatment on neck pain. Result : The treatment of Korean Medicine(KM) including acupuncture, chuna therapy decreased V.A.S. significantly. Conclusion : Acupuncture, chuna therapy were useful treatment for relieving the hand paresthesia due to thoracic outlet syndrome.
