  • Angiogenesis is a fundamental process in reproduction and wound healing. Under these condition, neovascularization is tightly regulated. Unregulated angiogenesis may lead to several angiogenic diseases, and is thought to be indispensible for solid tumor growth and metastsis. The construction of new vascular network is a multistep cascade involving basement membrane degradation, endothelial cell proliferation, endothelial cell migration, and tube formation. Newly reported anti-angiogenic agents in oriental medical field have targeted both specific and multistep stages in the angiogenic process. From recent approach in oriental medical field with several herb medicines including activating blood flow and removing blood stasis medicine(活血化瘀藥), it may be possible in the future to develope specific anti-angiogenic agents that offer a less toxic potential therapy for cancer and angiogenic disease.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Oriental medical treatment in patients with acute lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc(HIVD). Methods : This clinical study was carried out on 44 patients with acute lumbar HIVD, who had been admitted from Oct. 2011 to Nov. 2011. All of 44 patients were treated with acupuncture, Chuna treatment and herbal medicine during the whole admission period. Verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) were used to evaluated the effectiveness of the Oriental medical treatment. Result : Siginificant improvement of the symptoms was seen when evaluated with VNRS and ODI. Conclusions : These results suggest that in the case of low back pain and lower limb numbness caused by acute HIVD, conservative treatments can be considered as one of the options of treating the symptoms beside surgical way.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes of quality of life after reduction of muscluloskeletal pain treated with Korean traditional medicine. Methods : The authors observed reduction of musculoskeletal pain and recorded pain reduction by VAS. And we surveyed SF-36 twice, admission day and one month later and compared each other. Results : 1. Musculoskeletal pain with Korean traditional medical treatment decresed significantly. 2. As patients' musculoskeletal pain reduced, all parts of quality of life increased. Especially, the improvement of Bodily Pain(BP), Physical Function(PF), Vitality(VT), Mental Health(MH), General Health(GH) were statistically significant. Conclusions : Reduction of muscluloskeletal pain improved patient's physical, mental, emotional and social quality of life. But Social Function(SF) and Role Limitation(RP,RE) were less than others, so we need to develop complementary programs.

Methods: A patient diagnosed with left anterior cerebral artery (ACA) infarction and hemorrhagic transformation was treated with electroacupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine. Results: Improvements in the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), modified Barthel Index (MBI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin scale (mRS), and K-MMSE were observed following the TKM treatment [MMT Gr. (3/0)→Gr. (4+/4+), MBI 20→89, NIHSS 8→2, mRS 5→1, MMSE-K 21→28]. Conclusion: TKM treatment could help improve the symptoms of patients with ACA infarction and hemorrhagic transformation.

The purpose of this study is to report three cases of Molluscum Contagiosum children treated by oriental medicine. Methods : The subjects are in regard to children diagnosed as Molluscum Contagiosum. We treated three children with herbal medicine(Gwakhyangjeonggisangamibang). Results : After treatment, the symptoms(papule on the whole body and pruritus) of Molluscum Contagiosum were improved. Two children of them were cured completely and the one child still appealed a little itching. But, the one child had atopic dermatitis, and suffered from itching primarily, so after treatment the itching sign decreased rather than before an attack of Molluscum Contagiosum. Conclusions : This study shows that oriental medicine can be an effective treatment for Molluscum Contagiosum. And the further study is needed with more cases and longer duration.

  • Objective : This study was aimed at investigating the therapeutic effects of acupuncture on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa on idiopathic Pakinson's disease patients. Methods : The subjects of this study were 42 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. We divided them into two groups; acupuncture treatment group, no treatment group. We treated the former group with acupuncture therapy focusing on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa while administering Levodopa as well. And the latter group was also dosed up with Levodopa without acupuncture therapy. To see the effect of acupuncture treatment clearly, we used gastrointestinal syndrome rating scale (GSRS) and visual analog scale (VAS) and compared the GSRS grade and VAS score of two groups statistically, after 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks since they have been under the treatment. Results : This study suggests that the group who has been treated with acupuncture on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa on idiopathic pakinson's disease patients showed higher GSRS grade and VAS score than the one that has not. But, We could't find statistical significance between the two groups on improvement of GSRS grade and VAS score. Conclusions : These results proved that acupucture theraphy might be available for re lieving symptoms related with gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa than the one that has not. But further studies are necessary.
