고온호기성 소화공정을 이용한 탄소원 회수에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Recovery of Carbon Energy by Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion)

  • A lab-scale thermophilic aerobic digestion (TAD) system was operated at $64^{\circ}C$ with mixed primary and secondary sludges taken from a large wastewater treatment plant. The semi-continuously operated reactor at HRTs of 1, 3 and 6 days indicated that longer HRT could stabilize sludge organics and solids comparable to anaerobic digestion. It has been found that reduced HRT of 3 and 1 day produced the effluent with highly biodegradable soluble organics, indicating the possibility of energy recovery in TAD. No proof of biological nitrification was observed at thermophilic operating temperature of $64^{\circ}C$, while nitrogen removal seemed due to nitrogen exertion during the aerobic thermophilic cell synthesis as well as ammonia stripping.

오존을 이용한 지하수의 철.망간 및 유기물 제거특성 (Removal Characteristics of Iron, Manganese and Organics in Ground Water Using Ozonation)

  • Iron and manganese problems in ground water affect far more water systems than almost any other water quality concern. The purpose of this study is to find the optimum condition of ozonation for the removal of dissolved iron, manganese and other organics in the polluted ground water. We proposed 4mg/l, 8mg/l as optimum ozone dose for the removal of $Fe^{2+},{\;}Mn^{2+}$, respectively. The removal efficiencies of $COD_{Mn}$ and $COD_{Cr}$ in ozone dose of 2mg/l - 6mg/l were about 40-50%. The removal efficiency of $NH_{3}-N$ was about 30-40% at pH8.5. In conclusion, it needs further systematic study and research concerned to treatability of $Fe^{2+},{\;}Mn^{2+}$ and biodegradability of organic compounds using Ozonation followed by biological filtration process in ground water treatment train.

  • As the quality of raw water deteriorates, a number of additional treatment techniques have been developed and adapted to water treatment for producing a safe and aesthetically satisfactory drinking water. So, BACFB process as pretreatment in water supply is to be effective to remove dissolved organics. This study performed to find out the effects of HRT and hydraulic characteristics on BACFB reactors in water supply. The flow type in reactor was a high dispersion with complete mixing. As superficial velocity was increased, bed expansion was closed to theoretical values. It was considered that below 30 min HRT could operated to ensure the removal of dissolved organics.

Adsorption of Specific Organics in Water on GAC and Regeneration of GAC by Countercurrent Oxidative Reaction

  • Granular activated carbon(GAC) is highly effective in removing organic compounds which are resistant to biological disintegration in wastewater treatment. However, GAC has reached its full adsorptive capacity, GAC needs to be regenerated before it can be used for a further adsorption cycle. Countercurrent oxidative reaction (COR) technique has been developed and evaluated for the regeneration of spent GAC. Various parameters such as flame temperature, the loss of carbon, destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of organic compounds, surface area, surface structure, adsorptive capacity, etc. were examined to determine the performance of COR. The results of these tests showed that adosorptive capacity of regenerated GAC was completely recovered, the loss of carbon was controllable, flame temperature was high enough to insure complete destruction and removal $(\geq99.9999%)$ of specific organics of interest, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), that are thermally stable, and on formation of toxic byproducts such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) or polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were detected during the regeneration process. The COR technique is environmentally benign, easy to use and less copital intensive than other available regeneration technologies.

표면처리 공정에서 발생하는 혼합 폐수의 전기화학적 처리에 의한 중금속의 재활용 및 유기물의 제거에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Recycling of Metals and Removal of Organics By Electrochemical Treatment of Mixed Waste Water of Surface Finishing Industry)

  • Cyclic sweep voltametry was performed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of heavy metal ions and the organic additives in surface finishing process. And electrolysis using parallel plate electrode electrolyzer was carried out to simulate the treatment of real waste water. Results showed that more than 99 percent of Cu was recovered and selective recovery of Cu in mixed waste water was possible, but the possibility of economical recovery of Ni and Cr were very low due to the evolution of hydrogen gas. Electrochemical oxidation of cyanide and organic additives on anode showed very excellent removal rate. The complete removal of several hundred ppm of cynide was possible within several tens minutes and organics within 2 or 3 hours. Even in case of concentrate waste water, the complete removal of COD by using NaCl and air stirring seemed to be possible.

  • Caustic (NaOH) solution is used to remove $H_2S$ from hydrocarbon streams in petroleum refining industry, gradually being, so called, spent sulfidic caustic (SSC) which has high levels of $H_2S$ and alkalinity. Thus, SSC can be used as an electron donor and a buffering agent for autotrophic denitrification. As SSC, however, contains some non-biodegradable organics, air stripping was conducted to remove the non-biodegradable organics. As a result, over 93 % of the non-biodegradable organics was removed within 30 min of aeration. Then, $Na_2S_2O_3{\cdot}5H_2O$, methanol and organic matters, which are produced from a biodiesel production plant, were added to reform the air-stripped SSC and their products being referred to new sulfidic caustics (NSCs) I, II and III, respectively. Thereafter, to investigate the effect of these products on the removal of COD and TN, these products were injected to a biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process, resulting in additional 44 % TN removal without noticeable increase in the effluent COD level. Therefore, it can be said that the BNR process is a promising option to treat NSC as demonstrated in this study whose results can be useful for developing resource recovery technologies.

하수슬러지 퇴비화촉진을 위한 전자빔의 응용 (Application of Electron Beam for Accelerating Composting of Sewage Sludge)

  • 하수슬러지에 전자빔(3kGy)을 조사하여 퇴비화를 촉진하기위한 타당성연구가 수행되었다. 전자빔을 조사한 하수슬러지 탈수케익에 수분조절 및 탄소공급원으로 건조한 나뭇잎을 첨가하고 목편을 혼합한 퇴비단과 전자빔을 조사하지 않은 퇴비단(Control) 과의 시간에 따른 온도변화, 유기물 및 영양염류변화 그리고 미생물 활동도 차이 등을 비교평가하였다. 그 결과 전자빔조사한 하수슬러지퇴비단은 1일이내에 $60^{\circ}C$이상 온도가 상승하였고 Control 퇴비단에 비해 고온기간이 5일 이상 더 지속되었다. 또한 초기 5일 이내에 주발효기간 20일 동안 분해된 전체 유기물양의 70%가 분해되는 등 신속한 퇴비화가 진행되었으며, 퇴비화기간 내내 Control 퇴비단에 비해 DHAe-INT로 측정한 미생물 활동도가 높게 유지되어 전자빔 전처리에 의해 하수슬러지 탈수케익의 퇴비부숙이 신속하고, 효율적으로 이루어짐을 알 수 있었다.

고농도 고형 유기물질을 포함하는 가축 분뇨의 TOC 분석방법 평가 (Assessment of TOC Analysis Method for Livestock Manure including High Strength Solid Organics)

  • Two different methods for TOC (Total Organic Carbon) analysis of livestock manure including high strength solid organics were evaluated. Firstly, an analyzing method by dilution after pre-treated by Ultrasonicator and 100 mesh sieve for homogenization was defined as TOC 1; and secondly method divided by particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was defined as TOC 2. 116 samples collected from 56 farms were analyzed in TOC1, TOC2, BOD and VSS. TOC1 method showed higher accuracy at less than 30,000 mg/L of TOC while TOC2 method presented significant reliability at over that concentration. Regarding to the sample with the same VSS concentration, the correlation between TOC 2 and VSS (${\rho}$: 0.806) was slightly higher than that between TOC 1 and VSS (${\rho}$: 0.784), resulted from a relatively low loss of solids and a low error probability (dilution and homogenization effects) in the analyzing procedures. In addition, the reliability between POC and VSS in TOC2 was high and the POC was about 4.4 fold that of the VSS. Consequently, TOC 2 without dilution effect was assessed as a proper method to increase the analyzing accuracy of swine manure including high solid organics.
