Analytical method to determine rare earth elements which were extracted to organic phase by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) was investigated. Organic phase which had extracted rare earth elements was directly aspirated into ICP-MS by ultrasonic nebulizer(USN) in order to reduce solvent load to the plasma. Then, the count rate increased when MIBK(methyl isobutyl ketone) was added to EtOH(ethanol) but decreased when 0.03 M HEH(2-ethylhexyl-2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid, $P_{507}$, PC88A) was added to solvent which mixed MIBK with EtOH. The optimal temperatures of desolvation system were -10 $^{\circ}C$ for the condenser and 150 $^{\circ}C$ for the heating tube. The optimal nebulizer flow rate which gave maximum count rate and minimum reflect power was 0.7 L/min. The optimal pH and extraction time were 4.3 and 10 min for MIBK-0.03 M HEH system. Detection limits which were obtained through calibration curves at the range of 0.2 ${\sim}$ 20 ng/mL were 0.02 ${\sim}$ 0.05 ng/mL under the optimal experimental conditions.

The goal of this study was to identify new bioactive peptides in extracts derived from Tenebrio molitor (T. molitor) larvae for the development of functional foods. After extraction from freeze-dried T. molitor larvae with various solvents on time course, the extracts showed the highest 2,2,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity at 5 and 10 hr per total protein and solid contents, respectively. When the water extract was fractionated, a high methanol concentration led to a reduced level of high-molecular-weight proteins in the centrifugal supernatant, whereas increased DPPH activity in the supernatants suggests low-molecular-weight peptides may mediate antioxidant activity in the supernatant. Most of the organic solvent partitions, excluding butanol, showed similar activities in the water phases, and the organic solvent partition fraction exhibited a 28~44% decrease in activity following heat treatment, implying that some components in the fraction become unstable in the presence of heat. The addition of proteinase K to the water extract increased DPPH activity by 10~20%, suggesting that peptides, when released from total proteins, partially increase antioxidant activity. Therefore, we suggest that the antioxidants in T. molitor larval extracts make them a potential source of functional animal food.
Colorants were extracted from the heartwood of sappan lin. with MeOH under reflux, and the concentrate or the powder of dye was prepared by low pressure concentration method using suitable organic solvent. Various components were isolated from sappan wood, and the chemical structure and mechanism of compound having the excellent antibacterial and deodorization properties were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows ; The seventeen components of sappan wood were seperated by HPLC chromatography, and the five components among them were existed more than 6% and the other components were existed lower than 0.6%. The resolving powers of the non-polar solvent and polar solvent systems were evaluated by their ability to resolve the samples. It showed that chloroform-methanol-water(800:150:10) system has the best resolving power. Although the seperation rate is very slow, polyamide C-100 column chromatography gives a clear seperation of sappan wood. On the basis of the spectrometric data such as IR, UV, $GC-Mass,\;^1H-NMR,\;^{13}C-NMR\;and\;^1H-^{ 13}C-NMR$, the chemical structure of compound haying the excellent antibacterial and deodorization properties was established as brazilin containing the functional groups such as two quaternary carbon, one benzyl carbon, methylene contiguous to oxygen and methylene caused by oxygen atom.
It has been known that the organic base complexes formed with the anionic acid base indicators are highly soluble in non-polar solvents but relatively insoluble in water. In the work reported here the formation of the complex between chloropromazine and bromothymol blue was studied and applied it to the determination of the base. The values to determine the binding ratio of the base with the indicator at pH 3.5 obtained from the application of Job's method of continuous variation and mol ratio method were both 1:1. From the application of this reaction to the determination of the base with carbon tetrachloride as the solvent for the extraction, fairy good results have been obtained.
Distribution coefficients between nitrobanzene solution and deionized water, show a straight line when the number of alkyl radicals against the logarithm of distribution coefficient of the salts was plotted. After extracting salts of the indicator and the cationic surfactants with organic solvents, and employing the colorimetric method was used. A calculation method of distribution coefficients of the salts in the organic solvent has been suggested and it could be used for the extraction equilibrium of the primary amine, $CH_{3}(CH_2)_{n}NH_3^+$ secondary amine, $CH_{3}(CH_2)_{n}NH_{2}(CH_3)^+$, tertiary amine $CH_{3}(CH_2)_{n}NH(CH_3)_2^+$ and quaternary ammonium, $CH_{3}(CH_2)_{n}N(CH_3)_3^+$MO$^-$salts, (n=3,5,7,11).
"Astragalus Membranaceus Bunge", which is a medical herb, grows wild in Manchuria and Korea, is cultivated today in Korea. Any literature about the organic components of "Astragalus Membranaceus Bunge" has been extracted with methanol referring to a literature of "Panax Ginseng C.A. Meyer" and two kinds of colorless crystals were obtained. After recrystallization in absolute alcohol, the melting point has been measured. The one kind was $181-182^{\circ}C$ and the others, $184-186{\circ}C$ respectively. It does not contain nitrogen, sulfur and halogen. By Liebermann's reaction, the one kind was not a carbohydrate but might be a Saponin. Through paper chromatography, taste, melting point, spectrophotometry, and elemental analysis, it was concluded that the other was Sucrose. It has been notified that the compound can be crystallized at the proper temperature, purity, and concentration of the solution and also solvent system.
Among various water contaminents, organic compounds like phenol are difficult to be removed or destroyed by conventional methods under the unusual discharge conditions. The separation of phenol from aqueous solution has been carried out by several methods recently: absorption by an activated carbon, solvent extraction and liquid membrane technology. The liquid membrane based on water-oil emulsification has been tested as an alternative technology of the conventional technology. In this work, tri-n-butyl phosphate(TBP) and liquid polymers were examined as a liquid membrane in the supported liquid membrane(SLM). The feed concentration of phenol was varied and various types of liquid membranes were used to examine their effects on separation of phenol. It was found that TBP, polypropylene glycol 4000(PPG 4000) and polybutytene glycol 500(PBG 500) were proper carriers because mass transfer rates through them were much higher than or similar to that through methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK) which was used as a conventional solvent in a solvent extraction process.

By an aid of needle coating, we have fabricated a spherical microlens array using poly(methyl methacrylate) for potential applications in light extraction of organic light-emitting diodes. With an attempt to achieve high-density and high-aspect-ratio microlens arrays, we have investigated the coating behaviors by varying the material parameters such as the solute concentration and wettability of the poly(methyl methacrylate) solution and process parameters such as the dwell time of needle near the substrate, retract distance of needle from the substrate, and coating gap between the needle and substrate. Under the optimized coating conditions, it is demonstrated that high-aspect-ratio microlens arrays can be obtained using a coating solution with high solute concentration and a small amount of a hydrophobic solvent. It is found that the diameter and height of microlens array are decreased with increasing poly(methyl methacrylate) concentration, yet the overall aspect ratio is rather enhanced. By the addition of 5 wt% hexylamine in 35 wt% poly(methyl methacrylate) solution, we have achieved a spherical microlens with the height of 7.7 ㎛ and the width of 94.24 ㎛ (the aspect ratio of 0.082). To estimate the capability of light extraction by the microlens array, we have performed ray tracing simulations and demonstrated that the light extraction efficiency of organic light-emitting diode is expected to be enhanced up to 24%.

This paper aimed to develop a solvent extraction and purification process to recover high-purified ${\beta}$-carotene from recombinant Escherichia coli. Cells harvested from the culture broth were treated through numerous steps: dehydration, solvent extraction, crystal formation and separation. To optimize the extracting condition, experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of cell disruption, temperature, organic solvents, solvent-biomass ratio on the yield of ${\beta}$-carotene extracted from cells. The result indicated that no significant differences of extraction yield were observed from cells with or without step of cell disruption. Among different extracting solvents, the highest extraction yield of ${\beta}$-carotene, 30.3 mg-${\beta}$-carotene/g-dry cells, was obtained with isobutyl acetate at solvent-biomass ratio 25 mL/g-dry cells at $50^{\circ}C$. Notably, in case of acetone, the extraction yield was quite low when using acetone itself, but increased almost up to the highest value when combining this solvent and olive oil. The purity of ${\beta}$-carotene crystals obtained from crystallization and separation was 89%. The purity degree was further improved up to 98.5% by treating crude crystals with additional ethanol washing.
Azacrownoalkyl phenylphosphinic acids were synthesized and their competitive solvent extraction characteristics from water to chloroform layer were investigated. Phosphinic acids were synthesized in good yields by one step reaction of phenylphosphinate, aldehyde, and monoazacrown ether and then basic hydrolysis of the resulting phosphinate dsters. These complexing agents revealed a wide effective pH range in extraction of alkali metal ions from water to the organic phase and total metal ion loading at pH 11 was about 75%. The selectivity of the cation extraction was determined mainly by the cavity size of the azacrown ethers, showing $Na^+$ >> $K^+$ > $Rb^+$ > $Li^+$ > $Cs^+$ for the alkyl phenylphosphinic acid ${\underline{2}}$, containing monoaza-15-crown-5 and $K^+$ >> $Rb^+$ > $Na^+$ > $Cs^+$ > $Li^+$ for the alkyl phenylphosphinic acid, ${\underline{3}}$, containing monoaza-18-crown-6 moiety. Applicable pH range of these azacrown ether phosphinic acids in solvent extraction of alkali metal cations was wider than a crownether carboxylic acid with similar selectivity, showing considerable amount of metal ion loading in slightly acidic or neutral media.
