  • A series of column experiments was conducted to develop a monitoring system for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone were obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of soil organic matter (SOM). However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.

  • To see the effect of magnesium on adhesion to natural zeolites, a series of batch tests were performed in this research. Mixed bacteria were sampled from the digestion tank at a local sewage treatment plant in Seoul. Magnesium-zeolites were synthesized by mixing natural zeolites with 0.096 M, 0.24 M, and 0.48 M of MgCl2 solution. For comparison, manganese and trivalent ferric zeolites were also prepared. Two grams of 0.2 mm $\sim$ 0.3 mm sized zeolites(non-treated, Mg, Mn and Fe(III) treated zeolites) and 20 mL of water were mixed in a Corex 25 mL tube. Five milliliters of culture solution including bacteria was added to the tube. The tubes were equilibrated in a shaking incubator at mesophilic temperature $(30{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$. The bacterial concentrations were measured with a Microluminometer (New Horizons 3550i) and total organic carbon (TOC) spectrophotometer (Multi NC-3100).

  • The purpose of this research was to understand possibility of foodwaste treatment by hybrid anaerobic reactor(HAR). The Possibility of methane utility and applicability of hybrid reactor system using foodwaste as substrate was investigated. The maximum loading rate and optimized operational conditions were determined. Hybrid anaerobic reactor was filled with packing material 50% of its total volume between the tube and the outer surface. The packing material used was randomly packed open-pore synthesis activated ceramic(SAC) media as support media for microbial attachment, growth, and chemical stability protected bacteria from effect of organic acid accumulation. In this research, although foodwaste has high concentrations C $l^{[-10]}$ and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ concentration the possibility of foodwaste anaerobic treatment was when foodwaste is treated by anaerobic digestion, this study focused on the possibility using C $H_4$ gas made under the anaerobic treatment as an alternative energy source. Other objective of this research is to study struvite formation and crystal forms in anaerobic digester. HAR is used to investigate phosphate crystallization without the addition of chemicals.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the stream water quality by the experimental hybrid constructed wetland system. It consisted of the water layer, sand bed planted reeds, irises and roses, gravel bed, yellow-soil media bed and a flow shifter (FS) which can reverse top and bottom flow in the middle of the wetland. The organic compounds and nitrogen removal efficiencies varied with the seasons, namely temperature change. In summer, the mean efficiencies of COD and TN in the outflow from this wetland system were 63.4 and 48.0% and shown the highest, respectively, whereas, the suspended solids and phosphorus removal efficiencies seemed to be less affected by temperature. As a result of inspecting the decreasing trend of pollutants, nitrification-denitrification in the wetland was the major removal mechanism for nitrogen, the nitrogen reduction was especially enhanced by the application of a FS in the wetland, and phosphorus reduction was mainly occurred as a consequence of adsorption of the yellow-soil media.

  • We introduce a novel and efficient strategy for producing free-standing functional films via photo-crosslinking and electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which can allow the buildup of hydrophilic multilayers onto hydrophobic surfaces. Hydrophobic multilayers were deposited on ionic substrates by a photo-crosslinking LbL process using photo-crosslinkable polymers. The photo-crosslinked surface was converted to an anionic surface by excess UV light irradiation. This treatment allowed also the stable adhesion between metal electrode or cationic polyelectrolyte and hydrophobic multilayers. After dissolving the ionic substrates in water, the formed free-standing films exhibited unique functionalities of inserted components within hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic multilayers.

  • Ionic liquids are receiving an upsurge of interest as 'green' solvents; primarily as replacements for conventional media in chemical processes. Although ionic liquids are rather 'young' modifier, their great potential in high-performance liquids chromatography (HPLC) has already been demonstrated. This review presents an overview of the applications of ionic liquids as mobile phase modifiers in HPLC.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the recycled waste soils from construction site for using vegetation media. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, $Cr^{6+}$, As, Hg, Cu, Cn, organic P, TCE, and PCE were measured at recycled soil piles of an industrial waste treating company in the Metropolitan landfill area. The concentrations of polluted materials did not exceed to the standard critical levels of soil pollution in all analyzed items. The results suggested a high potential of recycling of the wastes soils for vegetation soil media. However, Cd and $Cr^{6+}$ almost reached the critical levels by the time of sampling, and it is necessary to develop a skill to lower concentrations of those pollutants. In the turfgrass test, the recycled soil did show an encouraging result as vegetation media in the early growth stage of perennial ryegrass.
