Thermal Decomposition Kinetics of Copolymers Derived from p-dioxanone, L-lactide and Poly(ethylene glycol)

  • The kinetic parameters, including the activation energy E, the reaction order n, and the pre-exponential factor Z, of the degradation of the copolymers based on the poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) or poly(p-dioxanone-co-L-lactide) (PDO/PLLA) and diol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments have been evaluated by the single heating methods of Friedman and Freeman-Carroll. The experimental results showed that copolymers exhibited two degradation steps under nitrogen that can be ascribed to PLLA or PDO/PLLA and PEG segments, respectively. However, copolymers exhibited almost single degradation step in air. Although the values of initial decomposition temperature were scattered, copolymers showed the lower maximum weight loss rate and degradation-activation energy in air than in nitrogen whereas the higher value of temperature at the maximum rate of weight loss was observed in air.

The Effect of Coagulant and Molecular Weight on the Wet Spinnability of Regenerated Silk Fibroin solution

  • The regenerated silk fibroin with various molecular weights (MW) was prepared by different dissolution condition and the effect of coagulant on the wet spinnability of the various MW silk fibroin solutions dissolved in formic acid was investigated by the observation of wet spun filament in coagulant and the measurement of maximum draw ratio. The observation on the wet spun filament in coagulation bath revealed that good fibers without bead were formed in a high MW and a very high MW silk fibroin samples. In contrast, beads were observed in the silk fibroin sample with medium MW. The maximum draw ratio of wet spun silk fibroin filament decreased with MW reduction. The decrease of maximum draw ratio in isopropanol, acetone, DMF and THF was remarkably higher than that in methanol and ethanol, indicating that the coagulant type strongly influenced the wet spinnability. The two simple evaluation methods used in this study showed complementary information for wet spinnability: (a) The observation of filament in coagulant was effective to check a continuous fiber formation and a bead formation, and (b) the maximum draw ratio measurement was useful to examine the post drawing ability related to molecular orientation.

Enhancing anaerobic digestion of vegetable waste and cellulose by bioaugmentation with rumen culture

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely used to valorize food waste (FW) because of its ability to convert organic carbon into $CH_4$ and $CO_2$. Korean FW has a high content of fruits and vegetables, and efficient hydrolysis of less biodegradable fibers is critical for its complete stabilization by AD. This study examined the digestates from different anaerobic digesters, namely Rs, Rr, and Rm, as the inocula for the AD of vegetable waste (VW) and cellulose (CL): Rs inoculated with anaerobic sludge from an AD plant, Rr inoculated with rumen fluid, and Rm inoculated with anaerobic sludge and augmented with rumen fluid. A total of six conditions ($3\;inocula{\times}2\;substrates$) were tested in serial subcultures. Biogas yield was higher in the runs inoculated with Rm than in the other runs for both VW (up to 1.10 L/g VS added) and CL (up to 1.05 L/g VS added), and so was biogas production rate. The inocula had different microbial community structures, and both substrate type and inoculum source had a significant effect on the formation and development of microbial community structures in the subcultures. The overall results suggest that the bioaugmentation with rumen microbial consortium has good potential to enhance the anaerobic biodegradability of VW, and thereby can help more efficiently digest high fiber-content Korean FW.

포도당 환원에 의한 쪽 천연염색에 관한 연구 ( A study on the Polygonum tinctoria natural dyeing of by glucose reduction)

  • The conditions for minimizing dyes and additives when dyeing cellulose fibers such as linen, ramie, and hemp fabrics were obtained using glucose, an organic reducing agent. Dyeability and colorfastness were measured through repeated dyeing. The overall surface dyeing concentration followed the linen>hemp>ramie order, and most of the colors were in the range of PB (PurpleBlue). As the glucose concentration increased, the blue series was strengthened, and the color was dark and clear. It was determined that glucose the concentration of 4g/L was appropriate for minimizing the amount of dye. When the dyeing temperature was 30℃, the surface dyeing concentration was the highest, and the color was dark and clear. Although the dyeing concentration increased as NaOH concentration increased, 3g/L (pH 12.37) was considered appropriate for the minimum NaOH concentration, which becomes gradual after the dyeing concentration increased rapidly. It was found that the surface dyeing concentration, when repeated six times for 5 min, was better than that of dyeing once for 30 min. Washing, rubbing, and perspiration colorfastness were all found to be excellent in grades 4-4-5, and colorfastness to light was excellent in grades 5 of linen and hemp and grade 4 of ramie.

Feasibility study on fiber-optic inorganic scintillator array sensor system for multi-dimensional scanning of radioactive waste

  • We developed a miniaturized multi-dimensional radiation sensor system consisting of an inorganic scintillator array and plastic optical fibers. This system can be applied to remotely obtain the radioactivity distribution and identify the radionuclides in radioactive waste by utilizing a scanning method. Variation in scintillation light was measured in two-dimensional regions of interest and then converted into radioactivity distribution images. Outliers present in the images were removed by using a digital filter to make the hot spot location more accurate and cubic interpolation was applied to make the images smoother and clearer. Next, gamma-ray spectroscopy was performed to identify the radionuclides, and three-dimensional volume scanning was also performed to effectively find the hot spot using the proposed array sensor.

탄소섬유/폴리아마이드 6,6 복합재료의 기계적 물성 향상 (Improvement of Physical Properties for Carbon Fiber/PA 6,6 Composites)

  • 탄소섬유 강화 열가소성 수지 복합재료(Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites; CFRTPs)의 물성은 다양한 요인들에 영향을 받는다. 그 중에서도 탄소섬유 표면에 Sizing되어 있는 에폭시(Epoxy) 층은 열가소성 수지와 상호 작용(Interaction)이 없어 매우 취약한 계면을 형성하며, 열가소성 수지의 높은 용융 점도(Melting viscosity)는 탄소섬유 다발(Bundle) 사이로 함침(Impregnation)이 어려워 탄소섬유 강화 복합재료 내부에 기공(Void)를 형성한다. 이와 같이 탄소섬유와 열가소성 수지 간의 낮은 계면전단강도(Interfacial shear strength)은 탄소섬유강화 열가소성 복합재료(Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites; CFRTPs)의 기계적 물성을 저하시키는 가장 중요한 요인 중 하나이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 열가소성 수지와의 상호작용이 없는 탄소섬유 표면의 에폭시 층을 열풍을 통해 제거하고, 열가소성 수지의 점도를 낮춰 함침도를 향상시키기 위해서 용액형 열가소성 수지를 제조하여 탄소섬유 표면에 Sizing 처리 함으로써 CFRTPs의 물성을 향상시켰다. CFRTPs의 층간전단강도(Interlaminar shear strength; ILSS) 및 굽힘 강도(Flexural strength)를 통해 이를 검증하였으며, 수지의 함침도는 기공률(Void content)의 계산을 통해 분석하였다.

떫은감의 재배지역과 품종에 따른 영양성분 특성 (Characteristics of Nutritional Components in Astringent Persimmons according to Growing Region and Cultivar)

  • 본 연구에서는 떫은감의 대표적인 품종인 대봉감과 반시의 일반성분 및 영양성분을 분석하고 비교하였으며, 대봉감과 반시의 재배지역별 영양성분의 특성을 살펴보았다. 다양한 영양성분은 품종에 따라 다른 함량을 나타냈는데 대봉감 품종은 불용성 식이섬유, 베타카로틴, 과당, 자당, 만니톨, 칼륨, 사과산, 호박산, 총 페놀화합물이 반시 품종에 비해 유의적으로 높은 함량을 나타냈으며, 반대로 반시 품종은 수분 함량, 조단백질 함량, 비타민 C, 칼슘, 망간, 주석산, 총 플라보노이드 함량이 대봉감 품종에 비해 유의적으로 높은 함량을 보였다. 재배지역에 따라 많은 성분들이 유의적인 차이를 나타냈다. 다른 지역에 비해 비교적 높은 함량을 보이는 영양성분은 A지역은 베타카로틴, 솔비톨, 만니톨, 아연, 총 페놀화합물, B지역은 조지방 함량, 리코펜, 자당, 자일리톨, 사과산, C지역은 호박산, D지역은 수분 함량, 망간, 탄닌, E지역은 조단백질 함량, 나트륨, 망간, 칼슘, 주석산, 총 플라보노이드 함량이었다. 이상의 결과로 떫은감은 품종이나 재배지역에 따라 많은 영양성분의 유의적인 차이를 나타낸다는 것을 확인하였으며 이런 차이는 떫은감을 활용한 가공제품 생산 시 고려되어야 할 사항으로 생각된다.

  • 비건조 화학펄프의 세포벽공 속으로 충전제의 충전을 요체로 하는 소위 섬유벽 충전기술은 제지 공정의 충전공정을 개선하는데 기여해 왔다. 섬유 세포벽 충전기술이라 함은 펄프섬유의 세포벽공에 두가지 이상의 수용성 염의 이온용액을 1차와 2차로 차례로 흡착시켜 충전제를 침착시키는 기술이다. 즉 이들 두 이온 용액의 세포벽 내에서의 화학반응에 의해 세포벽 세포벽공내에서 물에 부용의 침전을 유발케하는 공정이다. 비록 이 섬유 세포벽 충전기술이 제지공정상 비건조 화학펄프에 적용하도록 고안되었지만, 본 연 구에서는 폐지의 재활용을 위해 폐지에 이 충전기술을 시도하였다. 그 결과 무게비율로 폐지섬유의 약 5-6%와 4-5%의 CaCO$_3$와 SrCO$_3$가 각각 충전되었다. 비건조 화학펄프의 그들 값이 17-18% 와 16-18%를 나타내는 결과와 비교하여 매우 낮은 값이긴 하지만, 여전히 주목할 만한 결과로 간주되었다. 또한 이 세포벽 충전기술은 실험결과 재래의 충전방식보다 광학적 성질, 물리적 성질 및 강도적 성질이 훨씬 우수함을 보여 주었다.

주사전자현미경 및 X선회절법에 의한 탄화 MDF의 특성 (Characterization of Carbonized MDF by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray diffraction)

  • 포름알데히드 등 유해 휘발성유기화합물(VOC)의 제거성능을 지닌 MDF 탄화보드를 개발하기 위한 기초연구의 일환으로 MDF를 여러 온도에서 탄화하여 주사전자현미경법 및 X선회절법에 의하여 특성을 조사하였다. 주사전자현미경 관찰 결과, 탄화 된 MDF의 내층부 보다 표층부에서, 측면내층부에 비해 측면표층부에서 압착된 섬유의 형태가 나타났으며, 다수의 이물질도 관찰되었다. 그러나 탄화온도가 상승함에 따라서 이물질이 제거되었고 공극의 증가가 관찰되었다. 섬유벽 표면과 내강측에서 주름형태가 관찰되었고 세포내강측 보다 외부 표면의 주름형태가 더욱 뚜렷하였다. 또한 벽공의 손상은 크지 않았고 벽공이 존재하는 부위에서 주름형태가 적게 나타났다. X선회절 결과, 셀룰로오스 결정은 탄화온도 $400^{\circ}C$에서 배향성을 잃으며 붕괴되었으나 약간의 결정성은 남아있는 것이 확인되었다. 그러나, $1,000^{\circ}C$에서 탄화한 MDF는 셀룰로오스 결정이 모두 붕괴되었고 탄소원자에 의한 비결정성 회절강도곡선을 나타내었다.

졸-겔 필름을 이용한 반사형 광섬유 pH 센서의 개발 (Development of Reflection-type Fiber-optic pH Sensor Using Sol-gel Film)

  • A reflection-type fiber-optic pH sensor, which is composed of a pH sol-gel film, plastic optical fibers, a mirror, a light source and a spectrometer, is developed in this study. As pH indicators, a bromthymol blue, a cresol red and a thymol blue are used, and they are immobilized in the sol-gel films. The emitted light from a light source is guided by a fiber-optic Y-coupler and plastic optical fibers to the pH sol-gel film in a pH sensing probe. The pH change in the sensing probe gives rise to a change in the color of the pH sol-gel film, and the optical characteristic of reflected light through the pH sol-gel film is also changed. Therefore, we have measured the spectra of reflected lights, which are changed according to the color variations of the pH sol-gel films with different pH values, by using of a spectrometer. Also, the relationships between the pH values and the intensities of reflected lights are obtained on the basis of the color variations of the pH sol-gel films.
