  • This study was evaluated the effect of attractant or repellent plants for establishing push-pull strategy for insect pest management of organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The attractant or repellent effect of Ten plants, marigold, rye, Chinese chive, lettuce, chicory, Nongwoo-chicory, crown daisy, Treviso, green leaf mustard, and red leaf mustard were evaluated against diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphids, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug in organic Chinese cabbage field in Seosan in 2012. Of the ten repellent or attractant plants, rye and chicory attracted significantly brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug, respectively. Aphids ate attracted significantly to the rye rather than the other plants. Leaf mustard was attracted cabbage stink bug and brown-winged stink bug in order. Cabbage stink bug was attracted by only a combination of lettuce and Chinese chive. Diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphid, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug were significantly repelled by single or combined cultivation of crown daisies, Treviso, and leaf mustard in organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The results above-mentioned indicate that selected insect-attractant and -repellent plants can be used as tools for integrated pest managements of Chinese cabbage.

  • Microalgae is considered as one of environmentally sustainable and potential feedstocks to produce biodiesels. However, recent studies on life cycle assessments (LCA) of microalgal buidiesels have shown that energy requirement is not small to produce biodiesel from microalgae, especially during cultivation stage. The costs for carbon sources, nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorous, and water for cultivation can contribute up to 80% of the total medium costs. In the present article, recent trends on the utilization of several promising nutrient sources such as municipal wastewaters, organic fertilizers, combustion exhaust emissions and organic solid wastes were reviewed, and the potential strategies to be used as substitutes of artificial culture media, especially for the biodiesel production, were discussed.

  • This study was conducted with two objectives ; one was to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field and the other was to establish the environment-friendly rotational cropping system of soybean instead of rice in paddy field. In order to evaluate growth adaptation and yields, Eve soybean cultivars were cultivated in Yeoncheon, Keonggi province, with two cultivation methods such as level row and high ridge. Growth of the top plants, such as stem length, number of branches, diameter of stem, were higher in high ridge than in level row, however, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods. Dry weight of top plant was significantly different among the cultivars during whole growth stages, however, it was higher in level row than in high ridge at V5 stage while it became higher in high ridge as growth progressed. Roots were more developed in high ridge than in level row during whole growth stages. T/R ratio in level row was higher than that in high ridge. During whole growth stages, significant differences were observed among the cultivars in growth and yields in each cultivation method and yields of Eunhakong was the highest. In results, number of nodules and T/R ratio at V5 stage, number of pods at R2 stage, and number of seeds and T/R ratio at R5 stage had highly correlated with yields, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the microbiological safety of leafy vegetables (perilla leaf and lettuce) in relation to cultivation methods. A total of 2,304 samples were collected from plants, harvesting tools and soil mulching film during the production and harvest stages from organic- and conventional- farms. From the samples, sanitary indicator microorganisms (total aerobic bacteria, coliforms, E. coli., Environmental Listeria, and yeast and mold) and pathogenic microorganisms (S. aureus, B. cereus, Salmonella spp., Clostridium spp., and L. monocytogenes) were analyzed. In the production stage of leafy vegetables, the sanitary indicator microorganisms was not detected regardless of cultivation method or it was detected to be less than $3.4\;Log\;CFU/100cm^2$. B. cereus and S. aureus were found to be 0.22~1.55 Log CFU/g in perilla leaf and lettuce produced by organic farms, and S. aureus was not detected and B. cereus was found to be 0.42~2.19 Log CFU/g in conventional farms. There were no significant differences between two cultivation methods. In the harvesting tools and soil mulching film, the contamination levels of sanitary indicator microorganisms and pathogenic microorganisms was low regardless of the cultivation method. However, there was a positive correlation ($R^2=0.4526$) in that the higher the microbial contamination level in the harvesting tool, the higher the microbial contamination on the surface of the plant. In addition, sanitary indicator microorganisms and pathogenic microorganisms were not detected or low in soil mulching during the production of organic leafy vegetables. As a result of this study, microbial hygiene control by soil mulching and harvesting tools was more important than difference of cultivation method in production of leafy vegetables.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the effects of some organic materials such as rice straw, compost, hairy vetch, phosphate rock, magnesium lime powder and ash in the organic paddy fields, and also to develope the new technique for better soil management using described materials. The results are as follows; Height and tiller of rice plants were higher in chemical fertilizer than rice straw or compost, however, those of rice plants in hairy vetch-rice cropping system reached to chemical fertilizer. The Eh value of soil has decreased consecutively since on 30th, May because of the rising of soil temperature by an increase in the activity of microbes. As a result of measuring yield and yield components, there is not significant difference between treatment. The application of organic materials enriched the contents of available phosphorus, exchangible potassium and calcium in soil, and, also improved the physical properties such as pore space rates and bulk density. From the viewpoint of soil management technology in organic paddy fields, the application of rice straw or organic compost might cause the decrease of yield compared with conventional cultivation system, chemical fertilizer, however, the application of hairy vetch residues of soil compensated for growth and yield as well as improved the physicochemical property. Therefore, it is assumed that the cultivation of hairy vetch for winter season can be one of the useful methods for organic farming system.

  • We investigated the resistance of 50 commercial Chinese cabbage cultivars against clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae in the three difference fields, Suwon, Hwacheon, and Pyeongchang. Wilting symptom on Chinese cabbage was first observed at 15 days after transplanting in Pyeongchang and Hwacheon, while disease symptoms appeared later in Suwon after the rainy season. Among 50 cultivars, eight cultivars, SC26, SC29, SC30, SC31, SC34, SC46, SC47 and SC50 showed highly susceptible symptoms like wilting and heavy root galls in all three fields. Meanwhile, seven cultivars such as SC05, SC06, SC07, SC09, SC11, SC17, and SC36 showed moderate resistance with delayed wilting and few root galls. Only two cultivars, Chuwol (CB22) and Gohyangssam (CB23) were highly resistant to clubroot disease until the harvest season in all of the three fields. These two commercial cultivars may be considered as candidate cultivars for cultivation of organic Chinese cabbage in Suwon, Hwacheon, and Pyeongchang.

  • Poria cocos is an edible and pharmaceutical mushroom with a long history of medicinal use in Korea. For the last 30 years, the domestic cultivated supply of Poria cocos has been unable to meet consumer demand, so Poria cocos is collected in mountainous areas and also imported from China. Thus, to increase the supply of Poria cocos, many artificial cultivation methods have been studied. In this study, Poria cocos is cultivated under different environmental conditions using plastic bags and the results compared. When cultivating Poria cocos at different temperatures (20, 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$) and using different numbers of plastic bag layers (1, 2), the most efficient cultivation conditions were a temperature of $25-30^{\circ}C$ and 2 plastic bag layers. The fastest growth was at $25-30^{\circ}C$, and the Poria cocos exhibited no weight change when cultivated using layers of plastic bags (1, 2).

  • Anaerobic decomposition of organic material in flooded rice fields produces methane, which escapes to the atmosphere primarily by transport through the rice plants. The annual amount of $CH_4$ emitted from a given area of rice is a function of the number and duration of crops grown, water regimes before and during cultivation period, and organic and inorganic soil amendments. Soil type, temperature, and rice cultivar also affect $CH_4$ emissions. The field experiment was conducted for three years to develop methane emission factor for water regime before the cultivation period from the rice fields. It was treated with three different water regimes prior to rice cultivation, namely: non-flooded pre-season < 180 days, non-flooded pre-season > 180 days, flooded per-season in which the minimum flooding interval is set to 30 days. Methane emission increased with days after transplanting and soil redox potential (Eh) decreased rapidly after flooding during the rice cultivation. The average methane emission fluxes were $5.47kg\;CH_4\;ha^{-1}day^{-1}$in flooded pre-season > 30 days, 5.04 in non-flooded pre-season < 180 days and 4.62 in non-flooded pre-season > 180. Methane emission flux was highly correlated with soil temperature and soil Eh. Rice yields showed no difference among treatments with water regime before the cultivation period.
